Siri uses the internet for searches and stuff. The internet is pretty huge.

I use Siri a lot in the car to do things that don't require an Internet connection, like sending and reading texts or playing certain songs. It's almost always slow as fuck on my 3G connection.

Still no NFC according to rumors?

What will Apple use in place of NFC? don't tell me passbook

Bluetooth LE does everything NFC does but better. It even has range awareness and can customize responses based on distance to the beacon.

Examples given in the WWDC session were to show general menu items when you get in the store, show receipt stuff when near register. Show general museum stuff when in museum area, specific exhibit information when you get closer to an exhibit.

I'm telling you. We can solve a bunch of cold cases with that fingerprint sensor.

There is a JB app that takes photos using the front facing camera and sends it to your email when someone types in the wrong code. Combine that with a false finger print signature and a database of finger prints, you could solve any case without needing to find semen.

I always forget how many people expect the S version of the phone to look different for some reason. Can't wait to hear people complain tomorrow that it looks the exact same!

You scan your fingerprint and associate it with your contact info. When you want to give your contact info (number, email, twitter handle, linkedin, website) to someone else with a iPhone 5S, you put your finger on their iPhone's fingerscanner, it sends it to Apple servers, and pulls your contact info to that person's phone instantly giving them everything they need.

I'll be damned if they don't do this.

That's a very inelegant solution.

No semen, no deal.

Fingerprint scanner is a great idea.

Lets solve some cold cases.

NFC has not taken off. I think point to point payment is a waste of time. You have a phone you could easily use a data connection to confirm payment.
I'm not talking about about using it solely as a payment system, how about something more practical as using it to open doors, grant access etc..., assuming said NFC would be programmable.

and NFC hasn't taken off yet? My goddamn bank card has NFC and I use it all the time.

In a city next to Toronto, our transit system uses an NFC boarding pass which will soon become mandatory in the near future.

bluetooth LE . Seems like a much better standard in my opinion. Especially since Bluetooth chipsets are already a standard part of most SoCs

NFC has fallen flat.

I personally don't see any demand for NFC. If I could buy something easily in line, add it to my passbook and scan the code, that's plenty convenient for me.

Dang, app updates ahoy tonight. Funny how none of them say in the notes it's for 7.0 tomorrow. Yet I got like a dozen in one day. Apple must have NDAd even mentioning 7.0's existence.

No it hasn't, it's just getting started
That's what people say about technology that will probably never take off in it's current implementation. NFC is not about to take off. It's adoption is increasing from nearly nothing to more than nothing but I think the LE standard is a much more technology sound future proof approach.

"NFC sucks" -MThanded 2013

Its been a few years people have wanted NFC to bump their phones together and look like idiots.

The new Real Racing 3 update specifically mentions 7.0. I was a little surprised those notes were allowed to publish.

Bluetooth LE seems to be better than NFC for those scenarios. You want to find the NFC scanner to bump your phone to, or just have the door get unlocked when you get close to it? There are already a couple of Bluetooth LE door locks that work with the iPhone:
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/06/smart-locks/

August

The lock only uses Bluetooth low energy to recognize when a phone with a digital key is near. No need to bring the phone out; August unlocks automatically.

Lockitron

You get keyless entry if you own an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 since the lock will recognize when you walk up via Bluetooth 4.0.

Kevo Lock

An app links your iPhone (sorry – no Android) to the lock using Bluetooth, eliminating the need to fumble through your pockets or purse for your keys.

Scanning my fingerprint on a strangers device gives them all my info? I hope that was a joke. AirDrop is far superior and requires less hassle.

Maybe we'll get multiple users (finally)? Scan a fingerprint and it launches that user. Doesn't really work well in the phone department but on an iPad it would be nice.

I just hope this ends up being a killer feature and not just some add-on that we may or may not use.

Actually Apple realizes their market share if they truly believed NFC was the future it would be in their phones by now. They think there is a better solution.

You honestly believe that?

You leaving it up to Apple to determine whether a certain technology is deemed fit for masses?

Well as an embedded computer engineer my perspective is that the BT LE standard is much more flexible and useful than the NFC standard. I think Apple and their team of engineers is most likely in that same camp. They also realize that committing to NFC now would possibly limit the adoption of BT LE enabled solutions. So I am glad they haven't gone that route.

I just hope you can scan your fingerprint instead of entering passwords and stuff since keychain is a new ios feature. At the very least your apple Id, but it's be awesome everywhere.

This is the most bizarre thing to so strongly "pick a side" on.
Why is it bizarre? If they included regular NFC I would have zero reason to carry my wallet.

My transit uses NFC, most of my interac purchases use it, it would have a profound effect on my day to day, I believe for others as well. Who said I was picking sides?

Hoping for new Thunderbolt Display that also supports input from regular displayport cables so I can use it with both a Mac and PC. I could build a PC with thunderbolt but then you can only output the video card signal through the a thunderbolt port by using this shitty program called Virtu MVP which breaks a lot of games apparently and is generally just buggy.

this larger screen stuff is hilarious. I'm surprised how often it comes up. Can't wait for people to pop into the thread mid conference to complain about it tomorrow too.

In how many hours, exactly, is this? Time zones are confusing me :/

Well, I kinda understand where they are coming from. Personally I don't mind screen size that much but having used a 3GS all these years a 16:9 aspect ratio on a phone feels strange, so I'd really like a different screen.

In 9 hours 41 minutes.
