Apple: Beatles on iTunes (Nov 16th)

Probably Apples response to Spotify and it will include live stream of videos, music, movies and tv shows. Maybe even Tv Channels.

This guy would obviously roll with a 15 inch Macbook Pro though. I have a hard time see Draper use a Dell or a Alienware Laptop (Barf)

Also i bet he would not use some gross LAN BOY PC, probably a Mac Pro or a Lian Li case if anything.

To be fair, Don Draper would probably produce the Apple ads

That's just it, they can't fix iTunes because of windows. It would be nice if it was modular, but apple tried that in the past, and people bitched: what's bonjour? Why does iTunes need to install QuickTime?

Can you imagine if they made you click the box to Install webkit? Or if you had to install sync services? A separate app for video playing? What I need to install AirPrint and print sharing and bonjour and then dig around in control panel to turn it on???

It's less of a headache for apple to put it all in one app, because that's the way it works on windows.

Apple can't change iTunes into something better or more modular.
Apple can't? How come other companies can (presumably) create cross-platform programs that aren't as fucking bloated as iTunes? I'm no expert, but surely there must be some way, like a full re-write.

But Apple won't do this for whatever reason. iTunes could benefit so much from this.

I mean, I like some Apple products, but I largely dislike the way they run a lot of shit in their company, as well as stuff like apple tax and whatnot which I won't get into in this thread.

Can you give us an example of cross platform software that handles the level of functionality iTunes does, yet you feel isn't bloated?

If I hear someone say Steam, I’m gonna cut a birch.

I love the service Steam provides but it’s slow, slow, sloooow on my iMac (both in Win 7 and OS X) when switching around tabs and launching that first window if it’s been idle for a day or so.

I said presumably for a reason. Though "levels of functionality" can be debated, I hear Firefox and VLC are alright on Mac, no?

Still doesn't justify for me, with the amount of resources Apple has, I don't understand why such a crucial part of their business is what it is, and why it has been satisfactory or worse in quality for such a long time.

Not for another 10 or 11 months, buddy, new ones just came out in September.

I doubt it's a subscription or stream-based music/video thing, since the announcement is put up for a shit ton of pages all over the world. Unless Apple has secretly been working on the licensing problem for a long time. A service like this would probably stay US-only for quite a while before breaching out.

I'm not sure that the majority of users would qualify iTunes performance as "satisfactory or worse".

Given the resources required to run Maya, I would be surprised if a similar machine performed poorly running iTunes.
when people are talking about iTunes running poorly, what part are we referring to? just the speed with which it opens? is it hogging resources while playing movies or something? crashes?

the only thing on the Windows version I ever though sucked was Cover Flow...but who the hell uses that anyway?

hell...my old tablet with X3100 integrated graphics runs iTunes without a problem of any kind. so what are we complaining about, exactly?

here’s what I think based on comments I’ve read and conversations I’ve had with coworkers. it’s a different thing for everyone.

- some people don’t appreciate that it’s a database app and they don’t like how it makes folders for them and how it requires metadata, and not file names, to sort stuff. they want winamp from 1998.

- some people don’t like how slow it is to open. it’s gotten better at this recently, but it still takes a little bit of time. if someone just wants to listen to one song, this delay may seem shitty

- some people believe that iTunes should not have anything to do with syncing devices like iphones and ipads. it’s anger directed at the concept of the program and how it has grown and they think this part makes it slower.

- some people don’t think the store should be built in. or that only music should be built in but not apps or movies or podcasts or whatever and they think this part makes it slower.

- some folks have legitimate, crippling performance issues and bugs that make using the program a horrible experience. (Word Assassin seems to have this. it is not normal)

-some people have albums with non-european characters and iTunes can have a hard time keeping some of these tracks ordered properly.

-like many database programs, it can be complicated to setup the metadata for all the different available fields. and iTunes does not do the best job of this compared to some dedicated clients.

all that said, I still like iTunes for what it is. I wish it was more. I wish it had cloud streaming and wifi syncing and that it started up in a blink, but it has never slowed down to a crawl for me, search is fast, I can make complex smart playlists, and I’d never want to leave iTunes to have to sync my iPhone and ipad

June. Mid-june. It's always in mid june.

Most won't, because their satisfied with only the need to sync music and apps, and many of them don't know Winamp exists. For the rest of us that are tech savvy, we can see that there are much more efficient and better performing alternatives to iTunes, and we are disappointed with the less than satisfactory performance for a product with such a breadth of functionality.

iTunes, at least on Windows, needs to be streamlined, and better optimized. It's a shame that such a diverse entertainment hub has to be so bloated.

After digging through the dumpsters outside the Starbucks in Cupertino, I am reporting that tomorrow is all about the white iPhone, which is now called The Beatles edition iPhone 4. Comes preloaded with The White Album, Verizon exclusive.

It's incredible using it with Apple's trackpad. No really give it a try.

This too. My iTouch is getting old.

Good point; this will likely be a preview of iOS 5 instead of new hardware. I wonder what features they'll wow us with!

Flash.

Gonna go ahead and predict Beatles.

Apple says "an exciting announcment." SINGULAR. One announcement that's iTunes related, just in time for the holidays. iOS 4.2 is a stupid guess unless there are some huge features they've been holding back (not likely). Any streaming stuff would have it's own media event. 2010 is too early for that stuff, 2011 looks to be the year of the NC-Data Center.

Is "tomorrow is just another day" a lyric from a Beatles song?

I will, but I still don't see the point. I guess it's because I use the Column Browser...which is just the shit, IMO. I have about 14,000 songs and 1,100 albums in my collection, and the prospect of scanning through them in cover flow instead of simply clicking the appropriate Genre and then Artist just seems like a huge step backwards in efficiency.

A white, Pete Best version of the iPod touch that never gets released would be very apropos. I'd preorder it immediately once it's announced.

beatles? that would be horseshit :lol

anything that increases the speed of itunes is OK by me, otherwise i can't think of much else that i want.

give us the ability to disable ping entirely without using console commands

It's a Madness song w/ Elvis Costello on vocals.

ok, the song is called “Yesterday” the word “tomorrow” doesn’t even come up once in the lyrics.

unless they’re referring to the slightly more obscure and eclectic ”tomorrow never knows” in which case tomorrow’s announcement is just going to be video of Phil Schiller and Steve Jobs dropping acid and eating peanut butter out of the jar with their hands.

For fucks sake, it clearly says "announcement from iTunes"

No fucking iPods, no new Macbooks, no new consumer level Tower Mac, no new iPhones.

So it's a new iPad then. Confirmed.

What about an updated apple tv that allows for native apps with a software enabled processor upgrade? I'm putting off purchasing one till I find out tomorrow.

Bullshit, you don’t know the “one more thing”. I would wait if any of you guys are thinking about buying a new MAC, iTouch, or Iphone.

Beatles? The babyboomer generation is on its last knees.

It's just really intuitive. Not as intuitive as it is for the iOS devices, but still really intuitive.

Be sure to make the jukebox part big too.

Introducing the all new iTunes, featuring The Beatles:

Will you still hate me, will you still berate me, when i'm 64-bit?

I guess this is as good as place as any to post this, I know I'm not the only one that wishes iTunes ran smoother on Windows. I have a fairly large music library (100+gb) and have no choice but to use iTunes. Unfortunately the thing eats almost all of my memory making it sometimes impossible to even listen to music and surf the web at the same time. So frustrating.

I'll take a 1 month ban if there is a new Macbook, iPod or a iPhone announced tomorrow.

I'm sure this sounds very "conspiracy theory," but Apple sorta has a vested interest in making the Mac iTunes perform like a chamb and the Windows one be sluggish.

Also, just because Apple is so wildly popular doesn't mean they have the resources to do EVERYTHING. I think it's well known that Apple pulled OS X developers to work on iOS. Jobs likes to keep his teams small and working together.

I like how you conveniently left out the iPad, Apple TV, and Lion. Feeling the heat already?
