Apple conference: New redesigned MacBooks. Thinest and lightest ever made

Seriously. Looks gaudy as hell.

Really? I don't care for gold, but the metallic muted tone they went with actually made me do a double take. If it was this kind of gold, I'd vomit blood:

Unfortunately, probably in the same place as my 13" Apple laptop with dedicated GPU. At some point you just have to accept Apple isn't catering to you, specifically. I'm not saying it doesn't suck - there's ZERO reason the 13" rMBP can't have the same 750M as my 15" - or that my 15" can't have a better gpu like the 860M. But, that's just the way it is.

So why'd you say something as profoundly daft as "it's okay, you've got options" then?

Because I don't.

I AirPlay, AppleTV, AirDrop, iCloud Drive, OneDrive, etc. USB is on my Mac, but I honestly have stopped carrying it around and just bring iPad with the iWork and Office suites to meetings, and just make shared drives for the groups. Nobody has had issues with that. I backup to Time Machine with USB while I'm charging the Mac on the desk though, so I guess I'd have to learn a new way to wirelessly backup to Time Machine and forget about it (they do make network hard drives and Apple has the network Time Machine so maybe that's next for me).

I just don't think they'd drop these things if they werent losing usage fast and weren't easy to replace in general.
Apple is pretty delusional with things like this it feels like, They think this is what people wants. this is a huge mistake on their part and I am not surprised to see them making it also it's really sad to see people defending apple. it's pretty pathetic.

Surprises me how many people constantly repeat the same song and dance when Apple releases revamped hardware.

Didn't mind when my friend's iBook didn't read floppies or when my desktop didn't come with a Zip Or Jazz drive. Didn't care when they dropped disc. Hell, I remember for YEARS people gave apple shit for not having Blu-Ray drives in their laptops... That format clearly took off :-/ Didn't care when my MBP dropped Ethernet.

I admit, I'm hesitant to drop USB ports and SD all together. But thing is - there are options. My rMBP works just fine. The new 15" and 13" rMBPs still exist. The CHEAPER MBA still exists.

And in two years, when they don't, if bet none of us will really need them, anyway.

Yep. Apple wants to remain leading in tech design, and force others to follow.

This is probably one of Job's products. The Apple product roadmap was pretty far ahead when he passed.

Who knows when we start seeing stuff that Steve never looked at.

From what was written about Jonathan Ive and the team in the recent New Yorker piece the products may be in development for years in various ways (tech, early prototypes etc) but the final designs and products are only a single cycle ahead of those in store. So Jobs wouldn't have had hands on with any of the recent releases, or known how they would come out although he was aware of a roadmap for some years ahead.

Could you back up an example where they were wrong with jumping this far ahead? You aren't seriously arguing this computer doesn't give options and will be seriously missing those ports more rather than less as time goes on?

Because I don't.

Because you have other close-enough options. In buying a car or a TV or computer or house or, hell, even dinner, I rarely get *exactly* what I want. But there's typically a compromise that's "close enough."

Guys, I like the new model. I occasionally plug in a usb drive, but that's about it. And the no-click option is all I use. It has a quality battery life, great screen, and sexy design. I think I may pick up one in space gray.

*Runs for door only to trip on laces*

USB-C, innovation guys. Its like Apple want me to hate them. Fucking ridiculous.

I just watched the keynote, hollyfuck. Those people screaming and clapping for every small thing like its some holly grail. Its like journalist are not even trying to hide it now, next time they all should just bend over.

First five rows are Apple employees, execs at the front and usually employees that worked on the products after, must feel good finally seeing it in all its glory.

The most annoying thing in Apple conferences are people clapping when someone announces something before they even get to explain what it is. ResearchKit was cool once they went over what it was. Shame by then people didn't clap nearly as loud because they already wasted it on the initial announcement.

Skel1ingt0n shilling hard like normal I see.

I have a several thousand dollar gaming PC running Windows and use a Dell laptop at work.

Hell, just bought a 13" Dell laptop with "Infinity Display" for my sister's graduation. It's exactly what she needs, and the build quality meets (and in some ways exceeds) what I can comfortably buy.

I don't care who makes something - if it's a good product, its a good product. I'm not "shilling" at all, I just think it's a fine laptop that looks great, is phenomenally thin, and continues Apple's desire to rid itself of as much I/O as possible.

I'm not saying anyone has to like it. I understand a lot may hate it. Some can't even use it. But if you need the ports, then either you have to change your workflow or buy a different laptop. *shrug*

That doesn't make this a shit product. And I highly doubt this will bomb. I could be wrong, but I imagine this is the direction we're headed.

EDIT: I think the MS Surface Pro 3 is one of the absolute best computers money can buy, and shows incredible industrial design. Just fyi

USB-C seems awesome, just the single port is the problem

Unless you're mad because "Apple didn't actually invent that!" in which case I don't give a shit whether they invented it or not, looks like a useful port for me, and I'm all I care about as a consumer.

everything you said sounds great except the catch is the adaptor costs 80 fucking dollars.

I would not have a problem with their single port if they had added at least a slim docking station that would give me around 3-4 USB ports, HDMI and an SD card slot. Hopefully something like this will show up soon.

But more importantly, I'm not completely sold on the keyboard, the short key travel is an issue for me, and I'm not sure I'll get used to that. Will have to wait and test it out in store.

Preaching to the choir here: only one USB Type-C port seems radical (and even ridiculous), but people said the same thing about Apple removing many things in the past, such as disc drives and ethernet ports, and it's not a big deal now. Pushing that hard for wireless connectivity is a bold move, and while for now it isn't optimal (wireless display connectivity and bluetooth sound both have discernible lag, as an example), it may just be so in the future. Once technology improves, the Macbook, which seems dumb now, will probably be the norm.

I've been waiting to see what Apple would do with the Macbook line-up, and while this new Macbook's form factor and weight is quite impressive (and it looks jaw dropping, specially dat space gray), it's not what I'm looking for - I need more performance and still rely on USB connectivity too much to make the tradeoff. The updated 13" Pro seems to be just what I wanted (man, 2x faster flash will amaze my face off), and it's what I'm going with.

I have to imagine 3rd party ports won't be long in the making, but yeah if this product is not a product which fits your needs or offers reasonable value at the moment, obviously you will want to hold off on buying it.

What exactly does this MacBook offer that the Air doesn't besides a very small size and weight reduction?

Retina display. That's it really. Everything else is a downgrade. USB Type-C would be great if it wasn't the only port available. They didn't even include a magsafe connector for charging.

I'm curious if the reason why they are tagging the MacBook moniker to this thing instead of Air is because of Skylake in the later half of the year.

I didn't see this posted yet, but I saw a photo on ars that shows the right side of the machine, has a 3.5mm jack and two mic pin-holes. So at least BT4.0 A2DP isn't the only external audio choice.

Gotta decide between a refurbished 2014 Macbook Pro Retina with 256gb storage for 1149 or the new updated Macbook Pro Retina with 128gb storage for 1299.

Not sure if she is going to need much storage at all.

Isn't it possible the force touchpad could be a downgrade? It seems like something that could be annoying if it triggers when you don't want it to.

New. 2x SSD speed and faster GPU is worth it in the long run.

So do people hate thin because it means losing certain thick features they like, such as ports? Like in a perfect wireless world, would this direction be welcome?

I am ready for it.

So this is likely phasing out the MBA in the same way rMBP phased out standard MBP after coexisting for a while?

I seriously doubt it since the Air came at an attractive price, you could get them new for around 8-900. No way Apple is foolish enough to kill that market.

The type c charging is mostly disappointing because no mag safe :(

Seriously seen that thing save people's ass from broken laptops again and again

I hope this means that the Air becomes ridiculously thin just to piss off people online. It will have one lightning port and no trackpad, you use your iPhone to control it.

In a perfect wireless world yeah, that will be great

We're years away though.

Is the screen's physical size the same as the 13 inch laptop? Or is it really 12 inch?

I'd be all over this laptop if it had more power. I'm just not into the Intel M.

It will be left in your bag and entirely operated with your Apple Watch- sold separately.

I'm really skeptical that the keyboard and trackpad are better or even equal to the current implementation in MacBooks, too. They look like compromises to make the devices thinner.

We'll never get there if someone doesn't take the first step, it's usually Apple that take that step and the rest follow. They've done it time and time again and they get hate on time and time again. From killing floppys with the iMac to killing drives with the MBA people have always given Apple shit for removing "essential" things from their products. It's like fucking groundhogs day every time Apple announces a product like that this cuts out things.

Within a few years when USB Type C is standard and used to interface with everything, no one is going to give a flying fuck that full sized USB was killed.

Anybody else think that the new 'c-port' on the macbook is going to become the standard charging port for all apple devices?

The ipad pro has rumored to include a usb port. Makes sense that apple wanting to keep their products thin would adopt this then make a killing on the adapter so that users can use usb devices.

I think you're giving Apple a lot more credit than they deserve. And just because them dumping standards was fine before doesn't make it good now. It's a very short-sighted attitude.

Except this time, it's not about taking a step. You seriously can't connect anything while charging at the same time unless you have some dongle. Dongles are never a good solution. Even if USB-C were the standard today, you still need to be able to charge a device and connect things simultaneously.

Kinda. They forced out hardware keys on phones before people thought software keyboards were ready. They forced out Flash before people thought HTML5 was ready. They got rid of optical drives before power users thought it was time. There's a whole bunch more.

I wouldn't call that leaps, i would call that progression. Having one USB-C port on a laptop is neither a leap or a progression, it's just stupid. If they had added 1 more port, no one would be having this discussions.

The issue isn't the C port, that's fine. It's the amount, you can't expect to run EVERYTHING off of one fucking port.
