Apple Cries About Samsung and Motorola's Patent "Monopoly"

i know some people are all too willing to jump in on Apple for this, but not me.

too many ridiculous patents are stifling innovation when the idea was to foster it!

multi-billion dollar compamies are being bought for a patent portfoilio... money that could be spent on research and development!

you'd think some sales figures were shifting or something the way some of these posts read.
To get you straight, when Google complains about patents, you'Re like "lol deal with it.gif" but when it's Apple crying foul, your tune changes and it's like "This system is fucked up!"?

Soon enough you'll sounmd just as bad as Rubx or GW

I'm weighing in on an issue thats a bit old here, but I saw a Samsung Galaxy Tab for the first time in person today and holy shit Apple totally has a case. I was on the fence but that thing is a carbon copy of the iPad apart from aspect ration.

Suck it, Apple. Suck it long and hard.
You make it sound like sucking a long and hard penis is a bad thing. Puta, por favor.

Is this sarcasm?

Because Apple would be doing the exact same bullshit if they were in Samsungs position, and they're only sore that they can't expand their patent range now. Man, this whole economical disparity is just shit.

DailyTech is a horrible, horrible website.

They use the word "Monopoly" in their story title, in quotes...not because that's what Apple is actually claiming, but because their staff writers and editors are too stupid to understand what Apple is claiming.

I like how they paint genuine experts in their fields like Dr. David Martin and Florian Mueller as "Apple supporters" and "pro-Apple" in order to dismiss their remarks.

Yeah, the whole 'Apple is crying' bit is also completely unprofessional.

Anybody have a link to a news-piece that isn't clearly biased?

If Apple's angry about it, that must mean Google did something right.

not bidding enough for the patents = doing something right?

wow, the Google Corporation™ has a pretty strong hold on you guys.

nobody is clean in this situation, forum warriors

Dude, even R&D gets you nowhere these days. Nokia spent 3.9 billion dollar on R&D last year. Look where they are now. Getting kicked and beaten by Apple
while getting royally paid for it. Patents ftw.

And yet our good friends at Samsung never sued. The good guys are awesome.
?

Samsung has sued Apple several times in several courts, asking for a ban on sales of iOS devices. The iPad was also initially banned from South Korea until after the original Galaxy Tab was released there.

i say the same thing in most patent threads

This will force Apple to innovate more to keep from violating patents. From a consumer standpoint I think this is a great thing. I also think that Apple has the capacity to innovate.

If I understand correctly though, these patents involve wireless communication between the phone and the carrier. So Apple basically have to pay the piper or create a new carrier.

Either is acceptable in Australia, though we'd usually say "tough tits" because we don't like using words with more than one syllable if we can avoid it.

Pretty much!

I mean, "yep".

Samsung and Motorola (now Google's patents, owned) do have a monopoly on patents though.

I had to read this five times to find how far down on the list Apple was.

Do you think someone should remind Apple that whilst they were still fucking around just sticking underpowered PC parts in expensive white boxes, there were other companies making phones and it wasn't Apple who actually invented them!?

Well, the list only shows patents related to wireless communication. I don't see why anyone would expect Apple to have all that many of them since they entered that area quite recently. I'm sure they have a massive portfolio of patents in other areas. Not to mention that they don't really develop new technology the way, say, Ericsson does.

This is true. Apple designs consumer products. And yet people seem incapable of understanding that design is just as patantable (or at least trademarkable) as "useful" technology.
I wouldn't mention this in this thread except that people are going all "Apple reaps what they sow" and in my opinion none of the recent Apple controversies were anywhere near being clear-cut issues, even if I didn't always side with Apple.

I am shocked that Facebook has less of these patents than Disney.

If Apple wanted to win the patent war, they should have bought Motorola. There are better things to do with 74 billion than hoarding it and making replica pentagons.
