Apple finally releases iOS 7.1

I am afraid to upgrade my ipad because i feel like the last 2 updates has made my ipad shittier. Bought it when it came out (the lightning cable/retina) and it was super fast and responsive and since 2 updates ago it's been sluggish even though i have formatted it and keystrokes have been utter shit.

Maybe i am just insane.

Please do, the UI it finally behaves smoothly (as it should have from the start). I have an iPad 3: the keyboard doesn't lag anymore and the animations are butter smooth.

Definitely feels a lot smoother and faster on my iphone 5s. Transitions are a huge improvement.

Gonna check my iPad Air, hopefully safari crashes are a thing of the past

Edit: holy shit huge speed improvement on iPad Air

Could they please just stop changing all the interface and buttons/swipe icons etc. My phone is a utility and familiarity is a big deal. Stop fucking designing/changing something new with every minor release 7.x release.

Honestly the design usability and product quality of Apple lately has been quickly going downhill.

Faster, snappier performance on my 4S after the update. Was worth it.

Same! i use a Nexus 5 as my phone now, but I still my a 4S that I use for podcasts and whatnot. I can tell a noticeable difference between 7 and 7.1 in terms of performance.

Good on you Apple... good on you. Now I'm really curious what you have lined up for the iPhone 6 & iOS8, let's see if you can woo me back :P

I think all the UI changes are improvements except for the caller's photo not being full screen anymore.

Anyone having any issues trying to DL the update? If I try to do an OTA update, I get an error. If I try to do it via iTunes, it shows a 3hr time estimate... I updated my mother's iphone when I was by her place earlier, and it updated in no time...

They change things based on user feedback. Plus iOS 7 is a major overhaul that's a work in progress. Things are going to change.

Yes of all the changes I really don't get this one.

I haven't seen the new one, but the old one scared me. Just too big. Especially if there are more people like my parents who revel in taking crappy cell phone pics that are candid and using them for contact profile pics.

edit: yup i like the new one better. Although, probably more ideal would be a larger pic in the middle, just not the huge one they used to have.

I though they were just going to abandon the iPhone 4 completely. I am surprised to hear that they are actually trying to improve performance. I can't wait to see how it performs now -- I still haven't updated from iOS 6 since everyone seemed to think it was borked on iPhone 4.

I'd bet the 4 gets left behind with iOS 8 though. I'll be shocked if they keep it going. It'd be the oldest and longest surviving iPhone model if they still support it.

By then I'll have traded in my 4S for a 5S though.

How is the performance on iPhone 4? Compared to IOS 6, or 7.0. Is it usable?
The general consensus is good.

To me it's night and day. It's not quite where it was with iOS 6 but it's a pretty big improvement regardless

Ok, I think my 4 just went from "I want to toss this out the window" to "This is sort of usable until I get a newer phone. "

Much better performance on my iPhone 4 so far. It remains to be seen how much of that is the bump from a reboot with an updated OS, though.

Is this new?

When a photo is being taken and you have auto flash, and it's going to use the flash, a flash icon appears at the bottom.

Could be old, since I generally have my flash set to off.

This is probably how I imagined iOS7 should have been released initially.

Had this updated on an iPhone 4 that belongs to a coworker, totally better than how it was before (ran like crap before)

Yeah I'd just wait until tomorrow, I'm having the same problem.
Will do, sad though because I am so looking forward to the iPhone 4 speed boosts.

Happy to hear positive things about this, I thought Apple had forgotten about those iPhone 4 users.

That and the keyboard shift key look which is just odd/dumb visual decision. I also don't like the new lock screen wallpaper fade, which is somehow darker than before. It looks as if I have some old crappy screen which needs warming up. Other than that I like the changes.

I think it's already easily the longest supported iPhone. The 3G got killed with iOS 4. And the 3GS died with iOS 5 I think.

Redmond Pie has the IPSW files available on their site. Not sure if that's also part of the congestion going on right now. I updated my devices earlier OTA without any delays.

I'll say one thing.

For some reason my geofence-based reminders stopped working a while ago and it didn't occur to me that it had happened until tonight driving home when it reminded me of something I set days ago.

I don't know what caused it to fix itself or why it stopped working in the first place.

Still can't delete full albums from the music app...this shouldn't stand Apple.

Yeah. I've been asking Apple through their feedback page for awhile now to change it back to how it was in iOS 6 ever since 7 came out. I did it again today since it's the only way I know to send suggestions that they supposedly read. I just don't understand why they made it like this in the first place.

Just noticed that they fixed something that has been annoying me ever since iOS 7 came out: the lock screen audio controls. The slide to unlock motion no longer triggers when using any of the lock screen audio buttons or the volume slider.

Yep, no dice downloading. Download keep failing in iTunes. Tried the direct ipsw link, and that download speed eventually dropped down to 0Kbps too. APple's servers getting annihilated, I guess, but they are usually better about this.

Currently updating my 4S right now.

Just looking at how bad iOS 7 is on it right now has me anxious to see if 7.1 will be that much of an improvement.

iPad 3 with the new update is practically blazing right now, it's really like night and day for it. And I thought that it was working just fine actually.

If some random jailbreak site I saw is accurate, Apple isn't signing anything other than the newest 7.1 firmware. If true, and if what I read is true, one couldn't do a restore of an older jailbreak-able firmware and then do a jailbreak.

7.1 fixed a battery bug on my wife's old 4S. Was completely draining in about 4 hours on 7.0 but is only down 3% in the same time since updating.

so this didnt fix the annoying fuckin music app bug where old old old music purchases end up on your phone and are undeleteable.

You've been able to turn that off in Settings -> Music -> Show All Music

Unless you already have that switched off and you still have music you can't erase off your iPhone. If so, that sucks but I've never had that problem.

Nope, that doesn't work. it's been off this entire time. since 7.0.6 (first time I noticed this issue... I don't listen to The Weepies on purpose...)

I was hoping this was going to fix the the music app by letting me sort by genre -> artist -> album hiarchy instead of hitting genre and it brings up all the albums and songs on one screen. Was one of the only things I disliked about the change to ios 7

2 questions.

1- any chance of ios 7.1 jb any time soon ?
2- will turning "On" the increased contrast affect my Screen life ?

in normal TVs, it does.

I know it's been like this since iOS 7 first released, but is there a way to stop my wallpapers from being zoomed in? I try turning off perspective zoom, but my iPad still insists on blowing up the image and cutting off at least 50% of the picture.

I refuse to upgrade until there's a jailbreak. I can't stand not having Chrome as my default browser.
That was true for me until iOS7.

But you know what? iOS7 safari >>> Chrome. Looks better. Same infinite tabs. Syncs with Chrome on desktop (and other browsers). It's better now... And iOS Chrome hasn't been updated significantly for a long time.

Maybe you wouldn't know that if you've made chrome the default since 7 came out.

On an iPhone 5 this update is night and day compared to 7.0.X, holy crap. The animations are so much more smoother and some UI are nice but those shift buttons (non capitalized) need to go.

Am I the only one that thinks the iphone could use some gestures? Like two finger swipe up to bring up background app switcher?
Apple is stupidly stubborn about such matters, I mean, it took forever for us get control center, and the JB users have been using it since iOS 3.
