Apple: Just how concerned should Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft be?

Apple announced the new iPad today that is quad core, has more memory than current gaming consoles & handhelds, and with retina display offers true HD visuals. It's a lock that they will continue releasing even more powerful iPads annually. Just how concerned should the three big corporations be?

If you want to find someone doing that kind of volume you’ve got to look outside the game business. At, say, Apple, which is pushing games on the iPhone and iPod touch. Apple sold more 14.1 million iPhones alone during the quarter ending in September. “Do I think that in the near term they can hurt us more than Microsoft?” Fils-Aime says. “Absolutely.”

The Times adds, "Satoru Iwata, the Nintendo president, is understood to have told his senior executives recently to regard the battle with Sony as a victory already won and to treat Apple, and its iPhone and iPad devices, as the enemy of the future."

The more support it gets from major devs = the more concerned they should be

Right now they're not

It's a sign of things to come. Unlike with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, Apple is able to continue offering up annual upgrades that are more powerful, more capable, and more impressive. The Apple TV is now capable of 1080p. The iPad is now true HD. When (and it will happen) Apple opens up the Apple TV to the app store, we're talking about very capable visuals and gameplay that many will be content with.

i don't think there were many people who only decided not to buy an iPad 2 based on the screen resolution, number of cores and the amount of memory. the new iPad doesn't change anything.

that isn't to say it isn't a sector of the market MS, Nintendo and Sony shouldn't be concerned about, as all are moving into tablets one way or another (OS, console peripheral, software support and hardware)... but nothing remotely changed today.

If they made a controller it would be like reversed Wii U and have potential btw, as long as you could connect it to any ol TV without issues. Then again, it's not gonna be competing with the current gen consoles for long, soon enough they'll be last gen (of course, the Wii U might not be capable of that much better graphically, though we don't know that yet, and it does have Nintendo software). If they did do that, I could definitely see it take a good segment of the market and pave the way for future iterations to do more than that, if they were actually willing to support it for a good chunk of time without making it obsolette with newer iterations (the iPad2 came out in 2011, now we're getting 3 and the big name graphically demanding games like this are already dropping 2) and with potential for gradual price dropping like consoles get since it's basically PS3 launch level pricing.

I doubt they'll do any of that, which is pretty shortsighted sadly, they could benefit from that approach without harming their image with people who aren't interested at all. It will probably be capable of running a current COD just fine, why not capitalise on that capability considering the vast audience for such games. Of course they wouldn't steal all the fans but there are many who would buy it for an iPad3 they'll get, solely or as a double dip, if they don't sacrifice controls and can play it on and off their TV.
Probably not concerned at all because it's unlikely any of the big three points above will be done in order to actually take the market from them as opposed to having a different market all to themselves with minimal overlap from people who enjoy both.

Replace iPhone w/ iPad.

Unfortunately, a lot. We live in a world where there is one tech company bossing around every other tech company with endless patent feuding. No company should be worth half a trillion dollars. More people buying iDevices means less buying other devices and keeping the market competitive.

Still going to appeal to the same consumers.. the concept of yearly massive upgrades is certainly disruptive to the console/system manufacturers though because it can only negatively affect the perception of a 5-6 year old piece of hardware.

Not at all.

No buttons is the biggie, but the more resolution and Memory is nice, but seeing as that apps will be locked to a certain amount of memory (likely less than the 512 the PS3 and 360 employ) it's also a non-issue. Developers have a hard time pushing 1280x720, and with less ram, no game is gonna run near 2000x1500 or whatever.

And being more advanced than tech designed in 2004 is nothing worth even referencing. Let's see what the PS4 and 720 bring.

Same as it was yesterday. It's not anymore of an immediate threat than the ipad 2 was. But the days of dedicated consoles under the tv don't have a long term future. And the tablet is a large part of that reason. So long term? Yes. It's a huge threat. Just makes Ipad 3 irrelevant in the analysis.

EDIT: Bluetooth for those who cling to "BUTTONS". PS3/360 don't have buttons either. They have bluetooth controllers that communication with a box. Tablets have bluetooth too.

Not concerned at all. It has no d pad or sticks. Touch is fine for some games but not for every game. Some games are just better with a controller. It will no doubt be great for touch games but I'd never play a Wipeout or God of War or Halo game on an ipad.

Been playing Beat Hazard on my iPad... oh how I wish I had real analogue sticks - the game would be infinitely better.

Virtual thumbsticks can be soooooooo frustrating at times.

That's why Sony/Ninty et al shouldn't be any more concerned.

Touch gaming is excellent for stuff that suits touch. For anything that requires fast, precise controls (such as dual analogue shooters), touch will always be inferior. Tactile feedback is paramount.

Not much. The product lifecycles are completely different, and it doesn't really affect their business directly.

There's no need for concern...yet.
People that want an iPad 3 will get one, those in the fence will either get one or wait.
Those that want a Wii U will get one, those on the fence will either get eon or wait...and so on.

Unless sales see a big decline this year and decline even more in the upcoming years and worldwide; they'll continue doing their own thing.

Well there was a lot of doom gloom about Nintendo in a post-smarthphone world. Things did change for them a little but 3DS was still a record setter. Generally the markets seem largely exclusive.

ipad3 is just an ipad 2 with beefier specs...i still want to see how're they're going to run games at that resolution decently lol
