How would it know when you're asking it something versus when you're just talking? That's the big trick. It would be nice, 'cuz having to hit any buttons or interact with an interface is one of the big things holding back voice commands. But it could lead to a lot of pocket-dialing instances where you send something to someone you didn't mean to. Unless the tech is just. that. smart.

Humans usually do it using intonation and context*, the software could do the same, but I don't think we are quite there yet, but it is definitely not out side of the realm of what is possible - especially in the future.

Siri seems great, but doesn't really work outside of US. It can understand what you're saying just fine, but it can't find any services you are looking for. I wonder if Apple will be able to get their assistant to work in other parts of the world and to what extent.

BGR restoring the faith! HYPE!

No iPhone5 leaks because it's going into production this week for November release, has anyone thought about that?

Voice assistant is supposedly only going to work on the new iPhone due to A5, right? So old iPhones (specifically 4) are shitouttaluck?

Perhaps this is why we will be getting an iPhone 4 with A5, as well as an iPhone 5 remodel with A5, so both 'sizes' can have this 'earth shattering' feature.

It sounds awesome though, and I know already that Apple will sell it to me in a way that will leave me drooling.

I remember an interview way back with Steve Jobs and him doing a Q&A, and someone brought up voice detection, speech to text capabilities. IIRC he said something along the lines of 'it's really unfortunate that they aren't as useful/accurate in the current states, but we're working on it'. You lived to see the future you set, sir.

Just like in the movies, you would start with, "iPhone .. What is the closest ... yada yada."

The initial command will auto-prompt the phone to listen. No buttons required.

You can trigger commands by mistake with that.

Even better. My Droid X is on the fritz!

Question for those of you who ordered online last time, how does the carrier (I'm with Verizon) handle it when ordering through Apple's site? As in, I am upgrading early, so will I be able to input my Verizon info on Apple's site so I can get the upgrade price (and see any early upgrade fees)?

I got my X through Best Buy so if it is too complicated I'll just pre-order there.

It's probably all part of indexing information for services around the world. There's a lot to go.

If that were the case, I hope you can set that to something other than "iPhone." Because my wife and I are often in the car together and we both have iPhones. That would be neat though - it continues listening for a short period of time until it doesn't hear anything else relevant then goes back to sleep.

Hmm, I assume that covers Best Buy locations too. I'll talk to them tomorrow when I go check on pre-ordering.

More from BGR: WSJ says Sprint has committed to buying $20 billion in iPhones over the next few years, could be getting iPhone 5 exclusively.
:lol

Oh my God...Sprint not only getting the iPhone...but getting exclusive rights to the NEW iPhone would be a delicious turn of events.

Wonderful for discussion, horrible for consumers.

I'd be extremely surprised if Apple did something like that. Goes against near every decision Apple's made with the iPhone except that initial AT&T exclusivity window at the VERRRY beginning. Didn't Tim Cook say during an earnings call that the days of iPhone exclusivity were over? I was listening to the This Is My Next podcast earlier today and they mentioned something like that while talking about the upcoming event.

I would love for sprint to get the iPhone. They are my carrier, my favorite carrier even. Unlimited data, they are the best IMO just based on that.

But exclusivity is bad for consumers. Fuck them for this if its true.

They can name it whatever they want as long as they give me a dual-core processor, better graphics performance, 1GB of RAM, a 4+" screen, and a better camera.

Also. Jesus, all those fucking people that would be swapping to Sprint for the exclusive iPhone. The network would take a SHIT day fucking one. AT&T all over again.

I would jump to Spring if it was 4G and exclusive. Good thing I'm out of my ATT contract.

I've yet to encounter any speech recognition that can understand my Scottish accent correctly the majority of the time. I look forward to testing this out.

My secret hope for this event is that when demonstrating iOS5 on the iPad (if they do) they'll announce a dedicated Spotify iPad app.

I don't think it's going to happen, I just find it entertaining that there's a scenario out there (and in play in some people's minds) where Sprint not only gets the iPhone, but gets the best one exclusively for a period of time.

If that played out it would be the craziest shit ever.

Never doubt me, Qub. haha

Welcome to the world I've enjoyed since Siri hit the App Store.
It's sad because you've been saying this for weeks now and I didn't download the app because I assumed it cost money.

Meh from my point of view limited data plans are the true evil. Anything that will help Sprint fight the duopoly is good for consumers at this point.

Same, actually, and I say this after talking about going back to Sprint for completely different reasons last week.

I have no interest in talking to my phone.

In public, you'll look like a prick. By yourself, you're a madman.

Is what the world said before iOS Assistant.

You are currently not under contract and may be eligible for an upgrade.
I'm ready if this rumor is true.

I think you have to use some kind of button prompt to make speech useful on a mobile device. Would take way too much power to just constantly analyze what you are saying for want of a simple tap or double-tap.

If Apple makes a wimax iphone someone is getting punched in the face. Wimax is shit. Sprint is supposed to be dumping it for LTE with their own press conference next week.

You gotta admit... it's pretty difficult altogether :\

Woah if iPhone 5 is exclusive to Sprint (at least for a few months anyway). I could see Apple agreeing to do this. I don't think they want a telecom landscape where 1 completely overpowers all others.

I don't think the Sprint think will happen either, but I found the report interesting, especially since it comes from the Wall Street Journal.

Also goes to show you how crazy the rumors are getting a day before launch. What other company can incite this kind of speculation. I even saw reports about the iPhone 5 on the national news over the weekend.

Lol what if it only understood a transatlantic drawl.
