Apple Pay Now Has 1000 Issuers In The USA

Educate me: can Google's and Samsung's solution work on the same systems or would each company need it's own store devices and systems to work? Because if it is the latter, it's going to be a muddy progression. I like the idea of safer, easier payment methods but would really hope not to have platform wars.

they all work the same all the card reader gets is card number from the device through nfc. so if that retailer takes one they take all of them.

only exception is that samsung pay has all the functionality of android/apple pay but ALSO has the mst technology which means it works on in 90% of places while the others are only about 10%.

but the thing about all of these touchless payment systems is when it works its good. problem is there are some times it doesnt work and YOU feel like you made a mistake and feel like shit for holding people up in line, well at least if you're not a narcissist.

The way I always start an Apple Pay transaction is to double-click the home button. This brings up Apple Pay automatically and starts scanning with TouchID. Then all you do is bring the iPhone up to the scanner and you're good to go.

Mmm good to know! I'll give it a shot.

I do expect Apple to add the mst stuff in the next run of iPhones, it's just too god damn awesome for it not to be there.

yep. this is awkward as hell:

its at a weird place now because mst is sort of being phased out infavor of the bottom chip slot on a reader which i personally think is pure garbage (slow/clunky/unintuative). so ading mst is sort of like supporting an outdated standard. also there's a reason why samsung bought looppay for millions cause its likely patented. so apple would need to license from samsung probably to incorporate it into their device.

Oh good point. While the additional security of the chip is nice and all, they do suck.

i never said awkward i'm talking about the times when you press it up against the reader and it doesnt work there are times this stuff just doesnt work for one reason or another.

no I get what you mean, it just made me think of how awkward apple pay is at drive throughs

I never understood why you can not add the Chase United Mileage Plus Explorer Credit Card to Apple Pay? Chase is listed as an approved bank, and I have 2 other chase cards in my Apple Wallet, so I am not sure why this United card does not work.

Now we just need more retailers that accept it.

If Target and Publix would just get on board soon then that'd be half my shopping. :D

Most of the places I shop at accept it, so that makes me happy, and it was nice to be able to use it at Walt Disney World last October, but I wish Target had it too.

At my job, I am in charge of working with clients to convert them over to accept chipped cards and once we are done they are also able to take Apple Pay and Android Pay, so there are a lot of smaller businesses out there who are taking Apple Pay too.

You can double tap the home button to bring up apple pay & authorize it beforehand, then present it to the reader without your finger on the home button, makes it no less awkward than regular NFC transactions

People (fanboys) are actually voluntarily trying out new payment method? I am not using any new credit card/debit card/phone pay/paypal options unless I am getting at least $100 bonus.

I got about 50 worth of free shit from Android Pay and I still feel dirty.

Why wouldn't they?

What's wrong with NFC? Debatable as to security vs chip and PIN, but as most of America seems to be stuck on magstripe payments, I'd have thought you'd all be jumping to use something that isn't so easily clone-able

I get at lease 2% back on my credit card. What does NFC offer me?

You use NFC to pay with your credit card, either by an embedded chip, or by registering it with a service such as Apple Pay if your bank allows it

So you get 2% cashback, same as I get cashback on my credit card when I pay with apple pay or by tapping the card itself on the reader

Problem with Samsung Pay: I have three cards from three major banks (Wells Fargo, CapitalOne, and Barclaycard) and not one of them supports Samsung Pay. These aren't small-town local credit unions or anything.

i have it with AMEX and BofA CC....and it works great ....sucks more banks and card companies need to support Samsung pay, it basically works everywhere even w/o a NFC reader

.... you use the same credit card so you'd still get 2% back

It's not really faster. It's just a different way to pay. Also I have 3-5 phones depends on the season.

I refuse to endorse any new payment processing middleman unless I get (substantial) free shit.

lol sorry i thought you were rebutting my point i thought you were being sarcastic.

perfectly reasonable stance. i think we're becoming more and more attached to our devices and having a phone just gives you that one extra way to pay for shit in the situation you forget your wallet.

Between

-some card readers only accepting swipe

-some requiring sticking it up the card reader's ass for the slower, clumsier, hard-to-find chip system

-some swipers revealing you'll need to reinsert it with the chip after swiping it normally

-nfc readers advertising they accept Apple Pay only for it to not work

-or confusing your clerk when you stick your phone out, only for them to reveal that it's been disabled for god knows what reason

..shopping today has become a nightmare. I almost want every retailer to fling their damn card readers into the sun and start from scratch with one universal device/standard that ALL OF YOUR EMPLOYEES UNDERSTAND AND ARE TRAINED TO USE.

I hate the chip system and I hate the general chaos and confusion with the use of smart phone payment systems. Brick and mortar stores really need to figure this shit out.

it's definitely faster/less cumbersome than chip and signature.

actually it's more likely a podunk bank.. my bank doesn't support apple pay either (though my credit card bank does). And yes, my bank is a podunk bank. it oozes from them from their counter service to their horrid "online app".

Yeah, I switched to a (pretty nice) local bank, and was disappointed when I discovered they weren't supported by Android Pay yet.

My favorite part of Apple Pay so far are the vending machines that accept it. Double tap the power button on my watch, hold the watch near the NFC receiver on the vending machine, and select your snack/drink. It's incredibly quick for my daily snack run at work.

This. Especially when a store has the chip reader but it's not on or has an NFC pad but it doesn't work with Apple Pay (CVS).

I use ApplePay everywhere I can. It's never failed on me or presented a problem.

Just need a few more stores to accept it and I'm good to go.

I use ApplePay everywhere I can. It's great and has worked flawlessly for me at every location I've used it, with the exception of one particular Rubio's location next to my work. They have since fixed it, but for a good while, you always had to pay twice. The first one would appear to be accepted (according to the pay terminal), but the register would still indicate that it was waiting for payment. Then the 2nd try would always work. (The first attempt would show up in my ApplePay log with a "-" for payment amount.) It was weird and it would always do it at that one particular Rubio's location. Luckily they have fixed the issue since I go there relatively often.

My bank started accepting it last year, and I have a Walgreens nearby that I tend to go to a lot, and it's great.

Walgreens also does a good job of letting their loyalty card work with Wallet. So hold up phone for a second, loyalty card activated. After the cashier is done, hold it up again for a second, payment complete. I love it.

I just use my bank card to pay with NFC, no reason to use my phone... (although using a phone might be more secure)
