Apple's iOS Podcast App - This thing is TERRIBLE

That's not a bad idea but a bad implementation.

I assumed the slow performance, crashing, and bugs were the implementation and the design/plan/intent of the app was the idea. But maybe I look at it differently. The idea for me is the vision that you intended to end up with, the implementation is what you actually produced. Podcasts is flawed in vision and implementation IMO.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm having a strange problem with this app, everything on my ipad flies down via wi-fi, apps/music/movies etc, but podcasts are downloading extremly slowly and I just can't figure out why, via iTunes on my PC they come down fine but not via the iPad, does the podcast app use specific/different ports or something?

I don't find download performance particularly poor on my phone.

The whole app still isn't where it should be, but it does what I need it to: gets my podcasts into a folder I can control from my car stereo.

They don't come through Apple's servers like everything else from iTunes/App Store, they come through the podcast owner's own servers. Different podcasts might be slower than others.

So this got an update today, looks like they took the skeuomorphism out.

Other enhancements:

• Create custom stations of your favorite podcasts that update automatically with new episodes
• Choose whether your stations begin playing with the newest or oldest unplayed episode
• Your stations are stored in iCloud and kept up-to-date on all of your devices
• Create an On-The-Go playlist with your own list of episodes
• Playlists synced from iTunes now appear in the Podcasts app
• The Now Playing view has been redesigned with easier to use playback controls
• Addressed an issue with resuming playback when returning to the app
• Additional performance and stability improvements

I just hope this version lets me get more than 15 minutes into a streaming podcast without dumping me into the previous episode and losing my place.

Here's what it looks like now, no more tape recorder skeuomorphism UI:

Thank FUCK! This was the worst, most amateur piece of shit ever. It was absolutely embarrassing that this was made by Apple.

Can you subscribe to feeds that require a log-in yet? with this? I love Downcast so I see little reason to change from it, but I like the idea of iCloud bookmarking and picking up where you left off on different devices.

So basically all the smartphone platforms have crappy native solutions for podcast? Its pretty terrible in Windows Phone since version 8 came out and they switched it from Zune to Xbox music.

Awesome. The update hasn't come through on my iPhone yet, but will update all my iDevices later. I've been listening to more podcasts of late and bought an iPod Touch almost exclusively for that functionality. Looking forward to iCloud synced podcasts for sure.

Some suggested that in Apple’s next mobile operating system, Ive is pushing a more “flat design” that is starker and simpler, according to developers who have spoken to Apple employees but didn’t have further details. Overall, they expect any changes to be pretty conservative. For the past few years, Apple has unveiled versions of its mobile operating system in the summer.

Design is one example of the increased “collaboration across hardware, software and services” that Apple said it was aiming for when Cook pushed senior vice president and mobile software chief Scott Forstall out of the company last year.

Is this a sign of
great
things to come?

Just seeing this app go from looking stupid and being more difficult to use than needed to this makes me already excited for iOS7. I thought Podcasts was the worst Apple app in terms of usability but I'm hoping for lots of nice small changes for the better now.

You're going to be in for a let down if you think iOS 7 will be a big overhaul. Ive only took over not even a year ago. iOS 8 will probably be where you see his influence.

Does this app sync your position in a podcast with iTunes? I'm tempted to try it now that it's not as horrible as it used to be but that would be a deal-breaker if it doesn't.

So far so good I do about 10 podcast a week. I started using it a couple of hours ago it lets me know a lot more about what's cached and the iCloud sync is a cool concept.

Definitely better. Still not sure if I'll switch away from Downcast, but this at least isn't a total embarrassment.

YES! It works! Finally! It started working well awhile back, but the syncing and auto downloads were still shit.

It's perfectly syncing between my devices now. Plus I like the new playlists, and finally a download manager in the app.

Huge improvement. This combined with the rumors for iOS 7 have me very excited for a much cleaner and more unified interface amongst the OS and apps.

I hate the little needle that you have to use to scrub, just give me that silver knob like in the music app.
Also, I listen to podcasts when exercising using Nike+ GPS and it constantly crashes, while the music app doesn't.

Horrible app is horrible. The update wiped out where I was with my current podcasts and loaded a bunch of podcasts I've already listened to. Also, the fact that I can't access podcasts that require a login is weak. I could do it when the podcasts were part of the music app. Now I have to risk losing whatever is on my phone just to update one podcast. Ridiculous.

Yep. I listen to podcasts when I run and I'm lucky if 1/2 thetime I'm able to listen to something.

It's atrocious...the playhead is so poorly implemented.

(EDIT)
Oh! There's an update...checking now.

OH GOD SO MUCH BETTER. THANK CHRIST.

Add me to the odd bunch who was actually quite fond of the tape player. It just looks utterly characterless now.

I'm sure it now does things better for people who micro manage loads of podcasts, but for me it's fucked up my list of Comedy Bang Bang episodes and which ones I've already listened to.

But what's this? "Add old episodes"? OK, I'll fix it myself.

...but wait, you're seriously asking me to manually tick over 100 podcasts individually? Just what the fuck do Apple have against interface design?

I also kinda miss the reel to reel player but overall the app runs a lot better now so it's a worth while trade off, I think the buttons could be a bit bigger for ipad users though.

This update fucked up the app for me. It only shows 64 (I think) episodes for the Giant Bombcast. I tried a few things but all of the episodes aren't there.

Fuck this. :(

I had the same. Just scroll down the list and click the add button. If that doesn't show, restart the app and make sure it does a global refresh on the main menu.

Thank goodness for that, what an improvement! Still not sure I can trust it to automatically download podcasts without it decimating my data allowance though. I got burned by it once and it still stings. Any feedback on that? I must say I kind of miss the tape deck, I thought it was cute.

Ugh! Update messed up my podcast playlist. I subscribed to 54 podcast shows, now all of them are coming up as unplayed.
