Are all video game based anime mediocre?

Hcoregamer00 said:
No because they aren't translated and released in the USA.

Same thing goes for Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Sakura Taisen, Air, Raimuiro Sekitan (although the game and anime are shit).
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien comes from a video game ? Which kind, a dramatic adventure ? Didn't know, DO WANT.

(besides this, I found Sakura Taisen TV series decent, but that may be because I'm a hardcore fan of the series)

Been wondering about the same, Devil May Cry was okay but terrible compared to what its based on, plus it made no sense to the other storylines
Tales of Symphonia seemed very good (just seen one episode however)

May already be beaten but...the anime are all licensed except lime-iro, the games, not so much.

Was there more than 13 episodes?

Yes, it was only 13 episodes.

Actually they are doing an OVA series that explores how the relationship develops if you went after Haruka instead of Mitsuki

Link 2

For reference Hakura is on the Left and Mistuki is on the right

Yeah, it is even better than that. It is a hentai visual novel where you can get into relationships with 7 different girls and each one has 3 different endings depending on your choices.

Yes, all anime is mediocre. And all anime-based video games are mediocre (at best). Finally, all anime films based on video games are mediocre unless they have lots of exposed bouncing tits.

Generally it is because the main source of reference is pretty darn incompatible with anime (manga). The principal idea of manga is to have a good pace and lots of energy in each page. That is why the last page in manga is called the "page turner" to heighten the intensity and motivate the readers to read until the end of the manga that normally ends with a twist.

The transition from manga to anime has these limits because the manga format is made to be read quicky, when transitioned to anime they have unnatural pauses and pacing. On top of that the page turners that translates to anime really don't do a good job.

Hence why the best anime are the ones that are made from the ground up as anime, like Kaliedo Star, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and many others because they aren't heavily reliant on a format with different pacing and pauses.

Mediocre or otherwise, I demand a Phoenix Wright anime.

If Capcom can produce series based on Mega Man, Devil May Cry, and even Viewtiful Joe, surely they can find some pocket change for the lawyers.

Gungrave

I own it and watch it again every couple of months. Definitely bucks the usual trend by not only not being a piece of shit, but a good stand alone anime series to boot.

Thanks to all anime being mediocre...yes, all game-based anime is mediocre.

Don't games translate better to comic book form than cartoons (yes, cartoons) anyway?

Well, the Phoenix Wright manga shows that somehow Phoenix Wright can be screwed up.

In regards to manga, lots of games do translate better to that format than cartoon.

An example of that would be Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Destiny, Star Ocean, Star Ocean 3, etc.

I'm just giving you all a hard time about the anime.

It's not my thing, but I'll allow for the possibility that others might find it not completely horrible.

If something is "not your thing" then don't go out or your way to insult something.

I don't like watching TV, but you don't see me trolling the TV thread in the off topic forums.

I rather liked the Sonic the Hedgehog OAV.

It was for kids, but it captured the 'Sonic' style pretty well, and it was entertaining.

Well, if you like Sonic, anyway. ;)

You can have Sonic X, however. I can't stomach that.

This.

Maybe it's the Sonic fanboy in me talking, but I liked the OAV quite a bit. Wish they could've expanded it more, as it's quite obvious they were willing to do more with it beyond testing the waters.

OTOH, Sonic X can rot in hell. The Adventure adaptations were alright, but everything else was endless cack.

I don't see how you can hate a whole medium. I wonder what anime you've seen, exactly.

But HEY, that's a whole other thread. *Makes it*

Did Growlanser ever have a anime?

Seems like a good candidate for one.

Also, kudos to MS for putting up some anime on XBL. I'm just hoping they add more funny animes like Tenchi Muyo and GunSmith Cats.

I think there is a ton of money to be made in the more nerdy downloads on the service. The main users for awhile will be technophiles, after all.

Gungrave is the exception to the rule.
Pokémon had its moments but you had to sift through hours of crap to get to them.

More moments than the RPGs in the single player quest format by far though.

(as visual novels aren't games, they're a form of interactive storytelling).
I'll give you true visual novels as possibly non-games, but ADVs are definitely games, and there are still quite a few good ones from ADVs.

ADV. And no, not all of them have multiple endings.

My god Pokemon has FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN episodes, FIFTY TWO episodes for a spinoff series, TWENTY TWO specials (one to two hours), and TEN movies...

That is not to say that the anime is good (I liked the first few seasons), but it is definitely a success. It is the cartoon series with the most episodes (and probably television series in general, I didn't check. I can't imagine anything else having more episodes). And that is quite a feat.

Does .hack//Sign count? It was a pretty good anime and I think the first part of the .hack marketing effort was a .hack game...

i was wondering about .hack as well. I saw most of the original series and thought it was pretty good. But its hard to tell since its concept was initially created for manga/anime/games all at once

Only one I know of that comes close is Detective Conan, although that one has been running much longer than Pokemon (from 1994 on). If you want to count all the DB series together (including GT), it reaches 508 episodes.

Air was really great. Kanon was incredible. (Including the Toei version. Actually, I prefer the Toei version in many ways.) I wouldn't have thought to mention Pokemon if others didn't bring it up first, but it turns out a good showing once in every 12-15 episodes. Not the most shining of records, but at least it has awesome music, orchestral versions of the in-game soundtrack.

The Tales of Symphonia OVA and Star Ocean EX, however, can burn. >:( I didn't think it was possible to make me hate Colette and Rena--respectively my first and second favorite human(oid) game characters ever--but oh, did they ever manage it. >:( No-Chakrams Stage Decoration Colette and Helpless Clingy Loser Rena suck.

And yes, I'm aware of the irony of my saying this while I have an anime Rena in my avatar rotation. I actually like the way they drew her face (the outfit changes and her bony legs are annoying, though), but it's everything else that's the problem.

Poor Jiggly. Did Rena's brattiness and inability to see thing from any other perspective other than her own get to you? (Lord, it was bad in the
Tournament. Whole thing was stupid. Claude's all Ohh I give up, then Rena rushes in yells his name, then bam one hit kill! I mean seriously.

Many people say .hack anime are better then the games (SIGN anyway)~

Star Ocean 2 anime is great. It only covers Disc 1 of the game, though.

That makes it not great! :lol

i grew out of dragon ball-ish anime long ago, but as a kid who ate that stuff up i remember fatal fury being very well done for a game-anime adaptation. you didn't even have to know anything about the games to enjoy it

its too bad the series kind of flopped in japan. there were some loose ends in the movie that were apparently meant to be resolved in another movie or OVA

Yeah shutup now.

Kanon (both versions, although I'm rather partial to the newer one), Air, and CLANNAD are all good. I hated School Days, but the ending was somewhat satisfying. Higurashi is awesome (no matter what some people might say). Certain series of Digimon are good (especially Savers), if you want to count that. Blue Dragon isn't that bad. Maple Story seems pretty terrible, while Ragnarok was okay. Devil May Cry was also alright, and the ToS OVA is pretty. Disgaea was a huge disappointment, but it's not terrible.

I'm sure there's plenty that I'm missing.

I want a good Phoenix Wright anime and a good Ouendan anime. If I can have those, I'd never ask for another thing again.

Posting something like that to a forum full of nerds is just begging for someone to correct you in a comic-book-guy voice.

Sazae-san (cartoon, 2000+ episodes, still running) and Guiding Light (live action, 15,000+ episodes, still running) say hi!

Agreed. The Sonic OVA should of been a series rather than just a two parter. It was possibly the most accurate animated version of the old Sonic games we got, and was animated by the guys who did the brillaint animated segments in Sonic CD. I liked it, even if the dub was laughably bad.

I won't comment on any of the animes already mentioned, but I didn't notice anyone mention Ninja Scroll. It's been a while since I watched it, but I liked it when it came out. Wasn't it based on the Samurai Showdown games, or was it a blatant knockoff that used the same characters with their names switched around?
