Are Final Smashes for primarily advertisement at this point?

Oh man, let's have fun and play Smash with my coworkers during lunch!

Oh I see they're hosting a room.

Oh, it's being set to stock, I guess that's fun if there's not a huge gulf in skill.

Oh, items are off.

Oh, it's final destination.

...

I guess Sakurai had it right when there was playing for fun, and then an option that isn't fun.

Can you not. Both ways of playing are fun for different reasons.

  • 2 Stocks
  • 6 minutes
  • Items off
  • Custom Moves on
  • Team Attack on
  • Only Battlefield, Final Destination, Smashville, Town & City, Lylat Cruise, Dream Land 64, Miiverse, Duck Hunt, & Omega Levels are available for Random.
I always set these rules & forget about it until I have to boot the game back up. So no, I don't think Final Smashes are a real selling point, anymore.

Always on in a party environment, always off in a competitive one. Seems simple enough.

Given what makes stuff like Melee competitive, I'm not sure how you'd go about balancing Final Smashes to be 'fair' instead of just glorified item-moves tied to each character.

Smash 4 is basically already agony to play as it is, I can't even imagine how goddamn excruciating it would be playing time mode with items on.

Pretty much. Competitive players already bitch about custom moves, and those are nowhere near as broken as Final Smashes.

No one turns on the damn things, but they are always featured in the trailers.

I'd rather have them remove the Smash Ball entirely and introduce a mechanic that allows for Final Smashes used as sort of ultra moves that are combo able. (You'd have to weaken a lot of them for this though)

I think way more people play WITH items on.

There are people that play without stocks? No matter what the skill difference is, wouldn't stock be better as if you are losing the match doesn't drag on longer than it needs to? It's not like less skilled players have some kind of even footing in point matches.

-Sigh-
Just because you don't use them doesn't mean everyone else doesn't use them as well.

Personally I love playing for fun, I hate competitive fighting it takes out the phone and brings out the worse of my friends when I play against them so I avoid any "competitive" battles like no items or smash ball.

Every DLC character announced so far, people were super excited to see what final smash they got.

Even if people don't necessarily use them often, they're flashy and entertaining and have a place in the game.

Once again competitive smash players can't seem to understand they are an extreme minority.

Everyone else >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> FGC, in terms of Smash playership.

People do like Final Smashes. Plus, Mega Man's is hype as fuck.

/thread

But seriously... you're making an incredibly ignorant blanket statement, TC. Plenty of people who aren't the FGC play with Final Smashes on, myself included. Sometimes I keep them on, sometimes I turn them off. Depends on my mood and that of the people I'm playing with.

Plenty of other people I personally know also play with Final Smashes on. Only hyper-competitive players keep them off at all times.

The only ones that bother me are Olimar's, since it's almost impossible not to take damage and the explosion range is huge, Kirby's in Brawl because it never made any sense (why does it grab someone across the stage but misses the person right next to Kirby?), and even though I play Falco, his and Fox's Landmasters are so cheesy and unfair it's funny. Just boost people right up to the blast zone and star KO them.

Playing for fun? Like who does that? It sounds awful.

No, I'm sorry, I haven't seen anyone in my 16 years of playing Smash who plays with time only. Even in 8-player Smash, where the mode makes more sense.

???

My brothers, friends and almost every single person we play Smash with set a 5 minutes timer when playing for fun and giggles.

Its very neato for all of us and allow people who are not very good at the game to also enjoy a long fight with all of us and its kind of amazing if at the end they get like 1st or 2nd place.

I play local only, usually with items. It's part of what makes the game fun for me. I know a lot of other people are like this.

Final Smashes would have to be really watered down if they wanted to balance them as special moves for competitive games. It just wouldn't work.

Love me some final smashes despite playing the majority of my matches as a filthy competitive. What does that make me? D:

I'm not competitive and I can't stand the items in Smash Bros.

Of course, I'll probably never buy another Smash so who cares what I think lol

Coin matches should be in EVO.
Coin matches are fun, actually.

I guess that makes sense. We usually team up higher skill players with lower skill ones, so we end up sharing stocks if necessary.

Local party-time smash is 8 players, normal item distribution, 5 minutes and everyone gets a random character.

That hasn't happened in awhile though.

I don't think I've ever played a Smash round with final smashes turned off. Items-off Smash is boring too.

Even when I am playing with my friends who play competitively , we often make exceptions for just the smash ball

the notion that no one uses them is minority at best.

I like items, and even I hate the Smash Ball mechanic. It's such bullshit. I hit it three times with strong attacks and it doesn't break, then someone else jumps in and barely taps it and it breaks. Or if it appears and I let them go after it first so I can jump in and take it after they've weakened it, they manage to break it in like two hits. It's stupid and I always seem to be on the losing end no matter what.

Plus the Final Smashes are all so painfully unbalanced. They range from utter bullshit to completely useless. They were horribly unbalanced in Brawl, and they gave zero fucks about balancing them at all in Smash 4.

I wish that they'd balanced the Final Smashes and tied them to a meter instead of an item.

I like final smashes theyre just implemented really badly. But for what its worth, when my friends and i play serious we play with items off with the exception of smash balls since its a move and shit

I like to play GameCube in my underwear as much as the next guy, but I'm not making a thread about it saying it's the absolute.

Go drink some nattyice n chill.

Sometimes items, sometimes nothing. We just have fun...

OP, people that play SMASH as intended (for FUN) leave it on and enjoy it.

fun is a subjective term. What's fun for you may not be fun for others and vice versa.

One day people will realize this. Hopefully it will happen in my lifetime but i doubt it. It would almost make up for not being able to see intelligent life from other planets.

All the people I play with lately complain about items and want to play omega stages all the time, it gets on my nerves a bit. I just want to play some of the new zany stages in Smash 4 like Pyrosphere, Jungle Hijinxs, and Great Cave Offensive! Probably played them each like, once in a group setting.

I need more casual friends I guess?

Don't be that guy (Unless you're playing 8 player smash).

I never turn on items with casuals in Brawl or Smash 4 though I always turn them on in Melee and 64. There's too many lethal ones and too many that have uses that aren't immediately obvious. Smash is the best fighter to pick up and play with people who haven't played the game before, but the items in the past two installments really, really go against that. Kinda odd considering the more casual direction Sakurai seems to want to head in. Same with the stages. There's more with gimmicks, yet you can't really play them with casuals because their gimmicks generally need explaining.

That said, Final Smashes are a ton better balanced in this entry than they were in Brawl. Some still seem OP though. Like Diddy's. Fuck Diddy's.

Isn't that the exact competitive rules set?

I understand and empathize with the general sentiment of this thread, competitive Smash players (the people who usually wish to disable that sort of unbalanced element) are indeed a minority within the Smash community... but as long as we're talking about what's tiring...

do you all seriously, honestly believe that people who play video games competitively on a level that's not directly making them money, don't enjoy their time with them?

seriously?

honestly?

better yet... are you really convinced that Smash Bros. isn't a fun video game without items?

and for the record I've been playing Smash Bros for fifteen years and I've played against myriad players who wouldn't consider themselves competitive but still prefer to turn items off, sometimes just every now and then or when shit gets 'serious', or sometimes all the damn time.
