You didn't provide the most important piece of information...

Did you get the one with blank keys? That is the correct one to buy.
not actually, but it makes you super cool.

Best mechanical keyboard of all time?

Ducky Shine. True OG PC gamers know whats up. Ducky is the best kept secret but it's about to blow up. Forget everything you have seen before.

If you want mechanical keyboard + backlighting, it is your only choice. I cant wait for the euro launch. Tigerimports has a few. Even a couple with Japanese layout

What makes mechanical keyboards so superior?

It's the difference between typing on a real typewriter and a mushy noodle.

Nice, glad to see I'm not the only one that knows this gem. It was only $69 at Amazon couple days ago.

J & R had it for 49.99 the other day.

An awesome keyboard either way. A re-badged Filco that you can bludgeon somebody with if the need arises. Probably the best deal out there with regards to bang for buck.

KBT Race and KBT Pure have backlighting along with the razer and the extremely shitty corsair ones.

The new backlit ducky year of the dragon keyboards look fucking amazing though: www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3T-39IP1NY&t=0m44s

Gaming, no, everyday work, yes.

Wrong. Mechanical keyboards are best for everything.

Is the blackwidow decent? I like the price, but if it's just a cheap wannabe maybe I should wait till I'm willing to spend more.

I went from blackwidow to majestouch ninja. blackwidow is cheap mechanical keyboard in my opinion. If you want mechanical keyboard and don't want to spend too much moneny, then you can go for BW. But if you are willing to spend little more, I would recommend likes of Filco and other mechanical keyboard.

I bought one for gaming. Loved it so much I bought another for work. Then 3 other people at work played with it and bought them too.

Da(t)s Keyboard.

I'm probably going to get one in the near future. Might be a good bday gift to ask for. I was in a store and they had the black widow with a little cutout so you can hit the arrow keys. I tried it and it felt kind of weird at first. Then I kept doing it and it felt good, almost addicting.

I have my eye on a Das Keyboard. I like the look of them. They are basic looking but there's a little something extra that makes them nice.

I've always wanted a mechanical keyboard but I surf and type very late into the night/morning so worry about bothering the neighbours above me with the noise.

Although they're nowhere near that loud, the idea that something could make my drug smoking sex at 3 AM neighbors be annoyed with me for a change makes me wish they were louder.

I hate that guy. I loathe that guy. I kinda want to be that guy.

I prefer low profile keys. I'm always curious about how a good mechanical keyboard would feel but at the end of the day I'm happy with my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard.

That was the keyboard I ditched along with the K750 Solar Logitech Keyboard. Had the same mindset, took the plunge with a mechanical, never going back.

I see why people love mechanical keyboards but I can't stand them. I bought a Blackwidow and the noise is just way too loud and annoys my friends on Skype whenever we are playing games.

Although typing on it felt so good man.

I've been prodded by people in the past about getting a mechanical KB, this thread kinda pushed me over the edge.
Grabbed a spare rebate card and just picked up a CM Storm Quickfire Pro.

My god.
Why didn't I switch earlier.
This thing just feels incredible. Much better than my Razer Lycosa.

You can get one without the clicking noise. Seems most people don't realize there are multiple switches.

I switched to mechanicals a few months ago (bought two Corsair K90's). Never again will I depend on a membrane. For me, both work and gaming are awesome on mechanicals.

So sexy

I need to order a Ducky Shine asap

They're expensive, but they should last you forever. I got a Filco with brown switches many months back and love it. Typing and playing on it feels great, like the difference between going from Hori stock parts to Sanwa on an arcade stick.

Your friends have no taste in peripherals. Hell - at work, I love passively punishing my coworkers with my Unicomp. :)

I've got a Blackwidow "Ultimate" and I don't know if I could ever go back to a normal keyboard.

Yeah they're a little noisy, but they're so much more satisfying than regular keyboards.

I own one of these beauties:

Filco Ninja Majestouch. Filco boards aren't cheap, but they're worth the price. Solid build, minimalist look, and, after almost a year of heavy use, it feels nearly brand new. They even include a plastic cover and key puller. If the glossy look is your style though, the das keyboard is a great alternative.

EDIT: Also, I do not recommend Razer keyboards. My last non-mechanical board was a Razer and it lasted just two years. And my friend has gone through two Blackwidows, first a regular then an Ultimate. Both versions ended up with bad keys, either constantly sticking or just not registering. Go with the Ducky Shine if you absolutely must have backlighting, but remember it's another potential point of failure. I wouldn't want to end up with a half-lit keyboard.

Don't most mechanical keyboards require more pressure to push down the keys? That could make your fingers tire more quickly I guess. Maybe something to think about for competitive gamers.

No, it depends on the type of switch used in the mechanical keyboard and it actually varies for rubberdome keyboards as well.

No. Only a couple switch types would, and they're the least popular switch types (unless you look at stuff like buckling springs). Traditional membrane 'boards require more force to fire compared to most mechanical switch types, and are way more fatiguing on your hands due to the way the switch works.

Huh, I haven't really thought about it I suppose. Though I don't game much on mine so I don't hold down keys for very long. Another plus for mechanical keyboards in regards to gaming then. :)

What makes mechanical keyboards so superior?

Reliability. Durability. Features like N-key rollover. Mechanical keyboards are the superior option by all these metrics. I would also add feel to that list, as there are variety of switches, each of them unique, but many still prefer the squishy feel of a membrane/rubber dome switch.

I have this exact model here:

3255268475_d382ef8bed_z.jpg

Model -M 1391401 manufactured in 1994. The build quality on it is quite amazing, when IBM made these things, they really intended for them to last for a lifetime. Not like most throw away keyboards today that have a life cycle of maybe 2 - 5 years if you are lucky.

It's a great keyboard that I have had in my possession for about 16 - 18 years now, but sadly I have no desk space for it, nor does this keyboard have a windows/ super key. After reading this thread, I'm tempted to get a modern mechanical keyboard with a smaller profile.

The keys don't take any more pressure to press down than this current $25 Logitech keyboard I am using, and the keys are incredibly responsive.

Mechanical keyboards are definitely worth the price of you want to invest the money in one.

I have a das ultimate s and it's fantastic. I do kind of regret buying the blank key version for when I play dota2 and some other games.

How different do browns feel from blues? I've been able to try blacks, blues, and reds but rarely ever see browns. I definitely don't like the resistance on blacks and the reds are too mushy to me. The blues felt pretty good but I'd probably like to try the browns to know for sure that I want to go for the blues.

Wrong. Mechanical keyboards are best for everything.

That may very well be the case (although it's a matter of taste), I just don't think the difference is worth the investment for gaming alone. But for the whole everyday experience, it's worth it.

We had those old IBM keyboards when I was still in elementary school, that's when I fell in love with them. Although I have a cheap membrane keyboard at the moment.

"What is a mechanical keyboard? Just any keyboard with physical keys rather than touchpads or a silicon skin?"

No, see here.

In short, your everyday household keyboard has a rubber sheet over a circuit board and contact points underneath that rubber sheet connect with the circuit board when depressed telling the computer what key you pressed. Mechanical keyboards have individual switches for each key.
