Are N64 games really that expensive now?

Disc replay here in indy are selling them for a good 30-40 bucks a pop. I was gonna get a system before I saw this prices. Nah for now.

Terrible system to collect for imo. There's only a handful of interesting games and most of them are the ones everyone is familiar with. Also, the carts don't have end labels so you can't even display them well.

Funny to think that I really hesitated to buy a second N64 4 years ago to get a clear blue one for 36€. Now they are sold for 80€ on eBay. I'm glad I pulled the trigger.

I think there is a lot of sentimental value in having it on N64. It is weird, when it is a film people like they don't tend to hunt down the VHS...

They might if the film has been significantly changed over time. Ocarina of Time had some changes levied back on the N64 and again with the 3DS remake. In order to really get that nostalgia high it's got to be just as you remember it (though going back at all is problematic when your memories don't match the reality).

Hell, just the act of inseting the cart/VHS could be enough to trigger the warm and fuzzies.

I kept my N64 (only old system I have left) and a few of my favorite games on it for nostalgic value. Everything I had aside from Goldeneye has been ported, but I have a lot of good memories of playing it with my family so it is fun to start it up now and then. With the generation who grew up on it now being young adults I imagine the prices of those carts will only grow.

Strongly disagree!. I think it's a great system with some of the all time greats. There are plenty of hidden gems to find on the system like Mischief Makers, Rocket Robot, Body Harvest, Silicon Valley, Ogre Battle, Mystical Ninja, Goemons Great Adventure, Robotron 64, Flying Dragon, etc... Of course there are also plenty of well known games from Rare and Nintendo that are worth revisiting and some of the best games ever. May not be on the level of the SNES but it's far from a terrible system to collect for. To each their own.

I don't think there's anything wrong with emulating a game if the only way to buy it is used. But I digress. People want the original carts for nostalgia anyway.

virtual console

i LOVE collecting for N64. i need the strawberry and orange system and i'll have all the colors!

yeah and gamecube is creeping up a lot. better start collecting Wii games now if you want them cheap.

I don't know how high your standards are, but there are a lot of "interesting" N64 games. I mean, if you demand that there be 200+ interesting games to justify collecting for a system then yeah, the N64 isn't for you. I have around 70 games and there are still quite a few N64 games that I want

I agree with the end label complaint though. The third party labels I see on eBay are cool but the designs aren't great in my opinion..

Being able to afford them is definitely the reason I got into it when I did. Then the prices went up. I'll still buy, of course, but it's hard when you have to pay almost as much as a brand new game for a game that might not be as good anymore (due to aged game mechanics, etc.)

Emulating never felt quite as good to me, though. It's not just nostalgia as I'll try games I've never played before and still prefer to try on a console of some kind. Even the Wii/Wii U virtual console feels better than emulating on a PC, to me (controller or not).

It definitely has increased. I think my rarest n64 games are bomberman 2nd attack, harvest moon, ogre battle and snowboard kids 2. All boxed and such.

Cinemassacre featured Doom 64 last week.

Jeez, I checked the price on Doom 64 the day the video came out and the prices were still fairly reasonable (about $20). Crazy how much YouTube can affect prices.

Edit: I guess the Doom reboot being a surprise hit helped drive interest as well.

At least in my personal experience, old school gaming is one aspect where living in Mexico gives you a tremendous upperhand versus being in Canada or the States; whereas it's easier and faster to get new titles for cheap shortly after release in the latter two, you can't beat any given mom n' pop stores around here (which are also drowning in NES/SNES/PS1 games, you name it). An average N64 classic costing you 11 USD, often cheaper...Most I ever paid for a 64 title was 21.6 USD, and that was Conker's Bad Fur Day years before the Xbox One was released, let alone Rare Replay, so I paid the moolah gladly.

Plus, people commenting how Doom 64 is the "real" Doom 3 in many recent DOOM topics that are more active thanks to the new game.

And i absolutely agree with that notion btw. It's nice to see this game being appreciated when back in the day it was mostly ignored because of the more "next-gen" Turok and Goldeneye.

N64 game prices have been pretty crazy for a while. I sold my CIB Conker about two years ago for $180 - and I'll likely never miss it since I have that on Rare Replay and also the Xbox remake.

I've purchased quite a few NES and SNES games in the last few months and just bought an N64. So far I only have three games for N64. Not looking forward to price on some of them. I'm taking an alternative route to missing box/instructions. I have purchased a few instruction manuals where I can find them, and am still working out the details, but I plan to print my own.

I purchased for the cases:
HP Officejet Pro 8100 (on sale for $89)
Red River 8.5x14 matte double side photo paper
100 case of universal game cases
Dremel MM-30

With the Dremel, I can cut a few tabs out of the game case to fit NES carts. I can print my case art from thecoverproject.net.

Here's an example I printed yesterday. I just need to cut it down so I can fit it into the universal game case plastic sleeve.

I still need to work out the details on printing the manuals, but I will figure it out soon. I also plan on printing for cases for GBA, Gameboy, and some of the other games I am missing cases/instructions.

One other advantage is that there is some pretty awesome alternative custom case art where someone put together a cover for a game that is miles better than the original case.

That's the neat thing about retro gaming. We're far removed from the politics and hype of each console cycle, and are only left with the games. It's kinda like how Earthbound was a niche cult hit at the time of release, but eventually went on to become a game that's mentioned alongside Super Mario World and Super Metroid in top SNES games lists as more people found out about the game.

I'm friends with the owner of the local retro gaming shop and he says that N64 games are by far his biggest sellers. It's at the point where those who grew up with N64 as their first console are now old enough to have jobs, and are hit with nostalgia.

NES and SNES prices have already priced out a lot of people. GameCube is steadily rising. PS1 and PS2 (outside the RPGs) are still fairly low. Saturn has always been fucked with prices.

That being said, I don't think post-7th gen non-Nintendo systems are really gonna rise the way other games consoles do. Xbox games are still cheap as hell for instance, PS3/360 gen was filled with a glut of overproduced western games, and this gen will probably continue that zeitgeist, not to mention a lot of the 'games as a service' titles will have no value for collectors when the servers die.

I found a solution that I'm very happy with regarding the end labels.
Every loose N64 cart that I own I put in a plastic case and then I put the custom end label on the case. Here are two pictures of how they look:

Yeah I went to a game shop and the 64s were 60 bucks. The lowest game was maybe 25 bucks. Controllers were 30 bucks. I said wtf?

They had the all orange 64 for 200 smackeroos. I said go fuck yourself.

I just don't know where I put my 64s at. I have two at home somewhere.

Very few titles are.

Couple years ago I decided I wanted to pick up a N64 + games off ebay. Spent $80, got 42 games, 3 consoles, 5 controllers. Tried to find any Legend of Zelda games and the only ones I could find cost $45+.

I'm actually a real stickler for this in some games, even though I don't necessarily dislike new content. Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Symphony of the Night etc... you verge so easily into romhack material in a creative headspace that's totally removed from the original process. I still enjoy the new content and like that different versions of things exist. I'm dying to play the International Zodiac Job System balancing when they finally remake FFXII.

I still have Star Fox 64 and KI Gold complete in boxes but I also still have an N64, not set up right now though.

Those look nice, and the stickers aren't on the actual cart, which is a plus for me. I may have to do some of those, to go along with my CiB N64 games.

And they are cheap to do.
The cases are cheap and the end labels I payed US$60 for the set.

Those cases look super nice. I got some of these cheaper looking plastic ones back in the day that hold the cart, manual, and a memory card (game pak?) that I really like but I only have 4 of them still. I wish I bought more of them.

If I want the game loose I will use this case but if I want it with the manual, I will go for CIB.

There's a second hand media store by me that sells traded in carts for super cheap. I snagged perfect dark. Goldeneye and mischief makers this past month and all were $20 or under.

Nintendo games in general have been a steady rise for a while now and big titles from the the last few gens haven't really lost their value. Even 64 titles that sold massively (Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina, Banjo, etc) sit around $25+. I'm sure it has a lot to do with age of people just now getting into game collecting, they would have started getting into video games around the N64 era.

Ah, gotcha.

I don't really collect games, I just get the ones I'd like to play so I like to get the manual with them because some of the older games can be... weird sometimes.

I actually didn't notice how big your cases were until I took a closer look at the second pic you posted. Man! You got a cool n64 setup there!

This is what the ones I have look like. I should try and see if I can get more of these somewhere.

Don't want to go too off topic from OP, but I will say that when I built my PC a few years ago I was on some sort of crusade to stick it to Wii U's Virtual Console service by obtaining and then ripping/dumping Wii games, N64 games, SNES, and Genesis games. This was so I could emulate all these games on my PC.

The problem I ran into is that many old games (especially cartridge based) that I wanted to buy were prohibitively expensive. So much so that I gave up my crusade. I bought a Retrode and everything to jump start my crusade, but once I realized how expensive this could potentially get I backed down and sold all the cartridges I obtained. I have yet to sell my Retrode but I keep meaning to put it, along with my Dolphin Bar, on the buy, sell trade here on Neogaf.

I say if you have the funds and can afford to buy these cartridges I say go for it. eStarland is where I got some good deals on some N64 games such as GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.

The cases aren't really big. They are the size of the cart, well, a bit bigger to be able for the cart to fit but they are smaller than the UGCs.

Learn your lesson quick, if you want to ride the next train you better start buying up every semi-worthwhile GCN game while you have the chance. The nostalgia train never ends, and it's always picking up new passengers.

The Mario Party games go for like $50 each for just the cart, which is insane but it makes me super happy because I recently found them all in my basement and I don't have to spend all that money to get them now.

I could have sworn Doom 64 was like £10 a few months back, did the new Doom effect the price?
I paid 15€ for a copy for my wife in march. But it was just the cart, complete sets are supremely expensive.

Gosh, I wonder what the heck I did with my N64 games from when I was a kid. I probably had my mom donate them or something. I wonder if they're still in my room somewhere. Doubtful but I'll take a peek next time I'm at her house.

Are they worth as much cart only?

Edit: dang, a lot of them are worth a good amount even then:

Only worth as much as someone is willing to spend on them. eStarLand is pretty decent, sold most of my old stuff to them and made a bunch of money.

In fairness they were expensive then as well. An N64 game at release costing £50 was on the cheap end of the scale. When the N64 came out? They were even more ridiculous, but then they had to charge more than the already expensive SNES games.
