I've been looking for Fallout Collection for me and a friend. I check on ebay and pretty much all the ones I see are the PAL version, at least based on the picture (they claim NTSC).

Just make sure it has the right languages on the disc. Also, german fallout needs patches to return children to the game.

I had fallout 1 and 2 sitting for eons and since the Fallout 3 trailer I decided to actually play them. Sadly there isn't any way for me to get them to run under XP so I ended up just putting them back in the shelf. I should just ebay them since I have no way to play them (unless I dual boot my PC and install Win98 on a partition or something)

I played Fallout 1 under VISTA a while ago, are you sure they won't work under XP?

F2 should work fine. Fallout one might start minimized and have screen blanking under hardware acceration. Both should be FULLY playable. Try again, this doesn't sound right for them to not work.

Most PC games are region free, although as has been mentioned you need to check the disc has the right language on it. The only exception to this is Japanese games; due largely to Japan's inability or refusal to accept Unicode as a standard, the vast majority of them still use Shift-JIS or other Japanese encodings and consequently require you to set your system's non-Unicode region to Japanese or use some other kludge such as AppLocale.

You should get hold of the "White Label" version of Fallout/Fallout 2. This has been updated to work properly on XP without any special modification.

Are you on a monitor that doesn't want to run that resolution at all?

Nope, I have pretty decent gear, the screen doesn't flicker or anything the message just comes up so I figure it's a combination of my Nvidia card, DirectX version or some combination of it all.
Sort of disappointing. one of many games that I have sitting in a box as an impulse buy but never got around to playing. If my wife found out I'd be a dead man.

I haven't tried it myself, last time I played through the first game it worked just fine without.

exactly what PC games aren't region free? because out of the 150+ I've played over the 10/15 years of being a gamer I have never once encountered a region lock-out. even foreign language ones play just fine.

He's just dumb and actually means that some foreign language (animu ^_^) games don't have unicode support and require the locale to be set to Japanese.

Well, alot of monitors don't support full screen 640 x 480 anymore. None of the 3 LCD monitors I have support it, including a 19" Dell, 20" ViewSonics and 22" Acer.

That may be the issue. Try to run it windowed.

Neither fallout will run windowed. Dosbox can force it windowed though.

I think you've been playing too many h-games.

I don't know any Western publisher who has region locked a PC game (I mean, why? People can easily change country settings on PCs). There's no need to run applocale since Windows should support non-Eastern languages fine by default and especially no reason to if you're going to run it in English anyways.

Er it doesn't have to be a h game to need applocale. Even using some various programs won't let you. I've only ever had to use that once though.

I've been playing imports for years on the PC, though they have all been from Europe since, unlike most of GAF, I don't get my jollies from lolicon. As long as they are localized to English, it hasn't been a problem for me at all-the installers rarely do any kind of locale checking, and the games usually default to the string table for the operating system locale.

actually, a couple of old games i brought to Japan wouldn`t work on my Japanese PC.

The Sentinel Returns gave me a "this is a foreign version of Windows 95, you cannot run this game" error (i was running Japanese XP)

But... yeah... not exactly region locking
