Are there any games featuring female BFFs?

Ghost trick: Lynne and Kamila.

I wonder if any of the listed relationships would pass a Bechdel test, though.

They do

but that stupid test doesn't really prove anything anyways

There are tons of games where gender bias is the cause of female characters not talking about male characters.

At least half the game you listed are fighters, so they can't really pass the test by default :P

Where in the world did that come from? GlaDOS is
Caroline
, but at no point in the game (played it through twice and read the full "Last Hours" thing through Steam) does it say that she's
Chell's mom
, that I recall. Where does this come from?

In the lab while you are with Wesley there is a place with a "Bring your Daughter to work day" space and in the place with the biggest Potato plant is the Chell Science project where she did a Potato Battery.
Also, when Glados get the Caroline flash back, she realize that Chell is her daughter and stop acting mean and try to help her.
And the song "Want you gone" is about Caroline trying to protect her daughter from Glados test. Glados could have easily killed Chell, but instead she make the Turrets sing a song in Latin about how she want her daughter to be free.

"Cara, bel, cara mia, Dear, beautiful, my dear,
bella bambina, beautiful girl,
oh Chell, oh Chell,
que lastima, what a shame,
que lastima, what a shame,
deh! Cara mia, well, My dear,
addio. farewell.

Mia bambina, My girl,
cara, dear,
perchè non passi why don't you stay
lontana, deh away
sì lontana yes, away
da scienza? from science?

Cara, cara Dear, dear,
mia bambina, my girl,
ah mia bel, my beautiful,
ah mia cara, my dear,
la mia cara, my dear,
la mia bamina, my girl,
oh cara, my dear,
cara mia… my dear…"
So yeah, its not said in the game directly, but its strong in the background. Its more of a big Easter Egg.

Yeah but I purposely didn't list games that feature entire casts of females and no male characters to pander to the subset of the japanese audience that values "purity" in their female characters

all of which would technically pass the Bechdel test.

Fighters should definitely count though!

Bayonetta and Jeanne pass the test legit. I had it explained to me that so many girls like Bayonetta despite her being "oversexualized" because she doesn't come off as doing it for any man's benefit, which gave me new perspective on the character.

Same applies to her relationship with Jeanne

Would Morrigan and Lilith from Darkstalkers count? They sort of technically share a soul in different bodies and in several games they have a team attack.

Now quite sure if it qualifies, but Tobi Masuyo and Hiromi Tengenji in Namco x Capcom - they're originally from different games (Baraduke and Burning Force respectively), but they team up in that one while working for the same organization and get along well without going into lesbian fantasy territory (well Hiromi dresses like an 80's anime cliche, but that's about it), complementing each other's abilities well. Since Namco has this UGSF (United Galatic Space Force) thing where they're univied the contiinuities of several or their games including those...

Also, when Glados get the Caroline flash back, she realize that Chell is her daughter and stop acting mean and try to help her.

No,
she's already helping her, because she has no other choice if she wants to get out of there. It's an anathema/disgusting to her that she has a human stuck inside her, which is why she deletes her the first chance she gets.

And the song "Want you gone" is about Caroline trying to protect her daughter from Glados test.

No, it's not. It's about wanting her
out of there. Gone. Someone else's problem, because she's too much trouble to be worth it. She's got the robots now.

Glados could have easily killed Chell,

She said that she discovered it was just too hard to
kill
her, and that's why GLaDOS
let her go
.

but instead she make the Turrets sing a song in Latin about how she want her daughter to be free.

No. Again,
she just wants here gone
. She's obviously developed some kind of gratitude toward Chell for
saving her
, which is another reason why she wanted to
delete Caroline
. However the terms are also used generally when an older woman is talking to a younger woman she's gotten a bit attached to.

So yeah, its not said in the game directly, but its strong in the background. Its more of a big Easter Egg.

Still seems like a fairly big stretch.
The call to her "fake" parents? All the orphan jokes, and being serious that she was an orphan?
It seems like you're saying
it was a revelation to GLaDOS, as well, so that'd explain the earlier comments.
However, GLaDOS
deleted the part of her that was Caroline
, so I doubt that she would've been
let go by the Caroline part of here that was now deleted
.

Edit:
Honestly, it seems like an uninspired fan-fiction. Like how the Star Wars prequel trilogy involved all the same characters from the original trilogy somehow, despite there being "a 1000 worlds" in the republic. Seems like a major case of trying to tie everything back to itself instead of just accepting that there's other people out in the world that aren't part of the game.

Edit2:
Read the Steam thread it was based on. Yep. Uninspired fan-fiction that can't get beyond "everything ties together!!11!" Star Wars prequel levels of lack of imagination.

After watching this loop a couple of times I have to say that is some awful camera work... Fang has her back turned and moves in a very unnatural linear manner.

Vanille covers her face with her arm while clearly she is displaying some sort of reactionary emotion across her face.

Square done fucked...

I would normally agree, and its not official, but we will see in Portal 3. Its not like its farfetched.
The Science Project prove that Chell was there before the Glados transfert as a kid, so one of the Chell parent worked there. The fact that once Glados hear about Caroline she "unlock" part of it. Also, most people think that Glados could not delete Caroline, simply because Glados IS Caroline and that she could not delete a major part of her programming like that. So she send her up in the elevators, without a portal gun. Glados then try to kill her, but Caroline stop her and instead say goodbye to her daughter. Even giving her her only friend, the companion cube.
So yeah, its mostly hinted and some think its this and some think its not. But the Traduction of the song in Italian sold me.

It's just common ways an older woman refers to a younger woman she has some connection to.
In this case, escaping together.

Oh, and you're a member now. Congratulations!

Oh nice! Thanks! Yes, this is a common counter argument, and I think Valve wanted to seed the doubt. This way people talk about the game and theorized about it. We will see in either Portal 3 or Half life 3. Since both games are in the same world around the same time.

Portal 2 is 50,000 years in the future from the "Final Hours" writeup at Steam. Don't think Half-Life 2 was that far into the future, considering people from Half-Life 1 were still alive.
:P Therefore, unless Half-Life 3 takes a major jump into the future, it won't be at the same time as a Portal 3. Besides, Valve said they had stopped doing AAA single-player games, anyways, so that really hurts the idea of a regular Half-Life 3 and/or Portal 3, in my mind. :(

Well ... I can't say you didn't put some thought into it. I liked it well enough though. /shrug

Apparently any time two girls are friendly with each other, they absolutely must be lesbians.
It's okay. A lot of us do that with male best buds to try to equalize the situation. Shulk heart Reyn forever!

But seriously guys, games and pop culture in general need more female BFF's. Weird disproportion of females who are lone wolves, best friends with their sisters (aka has no real friends), best friends with some male cuddly creature/animal (aka has no real friends), or is somehow the only girl in the group full of males (aka has no real friends and they're gang-banging her). Holy crap, I just realized that basically every Disney Princess minus Pocahontas have no real female BFF's. o_0

Sora and Riku

Basically, if two females have a "bro" relationship, someone will find justification for them secretly having a lesbian relationship.

Kind of dumb, but there you have it.

To be fair, I like to imagine most male "bro" relationships in games as them being secret gay lovers

The part about covering her face is used in (artsy) movies and I like it. Often it really works when you see just glimps, sort of a real life feeling to it.

That movement on the character having her back at camera is absolutely terrible though.

So what you're saying is that Square, the company that brought us the blockbuster Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, the theatrical CGI movie that nearly cratered the company, don't know how to film theatrical CGI movie scenes. Wow.

A ton of games with female protagonists feature their female good friends, but it's rare that the 2 follow the same path together.

Indeed.

Sayo and Miki in Mysterious Ghost World: Advance/Pocky And Rocky With Becky count. I think she's the apprentice best friend.

Wonderfully put, its a true shame.

I dont know if they are both female, but Talt and Tael the two fairies of Majora mask. I always hear them as female though.
Tatl+and+Tael.gif

Just verified the Wiki, and it seem that Tael is male. Oh well.

Atelier series.

Rorona & Cordelia
Totori & Mimi
Meruru & Keina
I was about to post this. And yes, all the games easily pass the Bechdel test too!

Particularly Totori and Mimi if you get her ending. It's basically a textbook definition of BFF.

Why wouldn't they count? Doesn't BFF stand for best friends forever? Can't sisters be friends?

I thought the exclamation points would illustrate my mocking tone of the people in this thread who have actually seriously said that. Read back if you're curious.

Eh, yes it certainly does. The test identifies a sexist misrepresentation of a dialogue between two female characters. Thus, it proves that the object in question fails at the most basic level to provide a realistic and justified depiction of how female agents interact with each other.

Well to be fair usually when that is the case with females its the same for the majority of the game. By that I mean most of the time the games don't even have realistic depictions of how humans act in obvious situations.
