Are there ANY other games like God Hand?

I love God Hand. It's my favorite game ever besides Yoshi's Island and Persona 3 and Mario 3D Land. I want more games like it. I wish there was a sequel. Is there anything besides more God Hand that can quench my thirst for a game with deep combat like God Hand, or if I'm really lucky, the combat and an atmosphere of similar quality?

If deep combat is essentially what you want, I'm not going to be the only person to suggest Bayonetta. That said, I haven't played God Hand.

The gameplay isn't similar so much, but Bayonetta's cutscenes give off the same vibe. It has a lot of hidden references, Godhand being one of them.

Play Vanquish. You may also want to check out Anarchy Reigns. Neither game is entirely similar, but it's about as close as you can get.

This. Vanquish is especially awesome if you're ok with shooters.

Nope, God Hand is the only game that's like God Hand. It's unfortunate.

I never understood GodHand.

GAF is s strange place. in one thread, Deadly Premonition is railed for bad reviews but GodHand with bad reviews is great.

Explain.

Double dragon neon is a beat em up that's similar in tone: that is, fairly silly with lots of genre in jokes, but the actual combat is more like its 2D predecessors. It IS Co-op though.

Stop reading reviews.

I saw the IGN review of God Hand and said "fuck it, gonna try it out anyway". It ended up being one of my favorite games of all time (and the best action game of all time).

God Hand received bad reviews from terrible sources & is a fantastic game that (as this thread will show) has no games that build on what it achieved so untill that happens God Hand will continue to be lauded.

As for why the game is good watch this.

Very interesting, thank you.

Also, I still don't understand the indie approach to ignoring reviews completely. I personally don't care about reviews (I was just saying that how can two games with bad reviews be so polarizing).

The reason I ignore reviews is that they generally don't line up with my opinions of the game. I hated Uncharted 3 where it received universal praise, whereas I love RE6 which received some pretty scathing reviews. At the end of the day you have to play the game yourself to make up your mind about it.

It's also worth pointing out the IGN review was clearly another case of someone who played the first level, got their ass kicked for 20 minutes and called it a day with the review.

None of the criticisms held up when read by anyone who actually played the game.

All we can hope for is a spiritual sequel by Platinum. No fucking way in hell would I ever trust the current Capcpom to do anything relating to the franchise justice. I'm still angry that Capcpom has the rights to that series and the other stuff from Clover. Never will we get a satisfying conclusion to Viewtiful Joe, never will we see a true Okami sequel on a console like the Wii U that seems perfect for (the gamepad etc), and never will we see a sequel to Godhand that has it's amazing mechanics and humor.

Max Anarchy/Anarchy Reigns is the closest thing. No customizable combos, but the combat is satisfying and ridiculous all the same.

Not to mention Jean was a perfect fit for MvC3.

It's not about ignoring reviews completely (although nowadays it is possible as most games have demos), but you need to find reviewers/organisations that you understand their tastes so you can make a judgement on whether their complaints/praise will apply to you.

One thing the video doesn't cover is that unlike most games of the genre I cn think of, it lets you customize you standard combos and assign moves to a couple of other buttons, and you can earn more possible moves throughout the game, so ultimately if you're not comfortable with the moves you get at the beginning, as the game advances you changes things into something that feels better for you.

I'm just not a fan of the roulette for specials, but it's a tricky puzzle to enforce a variety of those while keeping the game moving at a steady pace without complicating the controls.

Also, I love Gene's track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAS-gHNV3Fs

Yep.

Same thing happened with Nier and that McElroy guy.

Except that's not the same thing at all. Basically, Justin couldn't figure out how to do the fishing part of Nier, and knowing that as a result he couldn't get any further in the game he decided to not review it. If IGN would have abstained from posting a review of Godhand because the reviewer could not get a hang of the controls, that would be more equivalent.

I always thought of Vagrant Story as the "God Hand of RPGs"

in that it has a really methodical style of combat in its battle system and allows for alot of player customization/experimentation in its mechanics

being an RPG though alot of the stat stuff isn't readily apparent or intuitive through normal play, so you might want to check out a guide before/while playing.

and it's tone/atmosphere is the exact opposite of God Hand really, lol.

Great game though. I'm a huge fan and I generally dislike most RPGs

If you want another action game similar in tone both DMC3 and Bayonetta have a similar sense of humor and the same developer DNA.

God Hand only received some bad reviews. Greg Kasavin gave it a good review. It's famous mostly for that 3 out of 10 from IGN from a reviewer who didn't make a good faith effort and became the poster boy for bad reviews (also indirect evidence that reviewers are lazily copying each other)

Also the comedy in God Hand is nothing like Bayonetta other than the fact that they are both over the top. God Hand is a (often direct) parody of kung fu movies and TV shows with a lot of chop sockey physical comedy. It's more similar to No One Lives Forever than Bayonetta but some westerners like to put all Japanese things in one box that they label weird.

It's an over-the-top beat'em up like God Hand is. I'm just trying to recommend games that may "feel" close to it for the OP, because it definitely did for me.

Madworld is only about points and yes it's an over the top beat'em up but it's mechanics and systems are nothing like God Hand's.

I would say legend of legaia is more like God Hand of RPGs but both are pretty far from it anyway

There really isnt much else like God Hand, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Anarchy Reigns are all good action games, Yakuza 3 and 4's heat actions do scratch a bit of that finisher itch, but nothing exactly the same alas

Yep.

It's hilarious that everyone complains about games being about following an arrow on the top of the screen or a point on a map now and apparently that's still too complicated for some people.

uhhhhh. I guess

I was saying they're similar in that the English adaption of both was handled by the same guy.

Obviously they're different games. Bayonetta adheres to a more strict set of world rules and lore while God Hand is pretty much melting pot of whatever Mikami and team liked and wanted to put in.

but I think you can definitely see the similar influences in both. God Hand just allowed for alot more creative freedom in its localization.

Your observations of the supposed pattern are haphazard and so your conclusion is inaccurate.

You don't have to actually ignore reviews, but you should understand that reviewers are likely to place more emphasis on certain features of a game while ignoring others. Obvious features like presentation quality are going to outweight more difficult to assess features like a combat system. Consider that most reviewers are far from experts in the character-action/beat-em-up genres. So you're going to have a lot of people missing what's great about God Hand but easily seeing what's weak about it.

God Hand looks like it belongs in the bargain bin, but it has a ton of depth that you can only discover by actually sticking to it and taking it seriously.

Nothing NOTHING like godhand. I will say that's one of those diamonds in the rough for me.

Like I said, didn't expect people to agree with me, because I'm the only one I've ever seen to make the comparison between Godhand and Oni. But aside from them both being 3D beat em ups it's just the vibe I got with the way the basics of combat worked, the enemy behaviour and taunting etc. Obviously doesn't have Godhand's customization system but there's a good bit of variety in the moves. Haven't played it in like 8 years but I'd say it's got more in common with it than Max Anarchy and Madworld, let alone Vanquish which people have brought up for some reason.

Now if you're talking about similarity in tone, well, I don't know too many other games where you fight gorillas and midget power rangers but I'm sure they are out there.

Alot of 2D sidescrollers have some pretty crazy enemy design, which is the genre God Hand is most often compared to I think

Speaking of which Battle Circuit is a good recommendation. I think it's the first capcom game to have a shop mechanic for buying new skills and techniques, which has since become a genre staple for their action games.

So is the only method ( short of emulators ) to play this game is to buy a PS2 or a backwards compatible ps3 and buy the original PS2 disk?

or buy the game on PS3 through PSN classics

probably the cheapest option too (9.99 I believe)

Vanquish is to 3rd person shooters what God Hand was to 3rd person action games, definitely give it a go. The gameplay is sublime.

Nothing else out there similar to God Hand itself though, I've looked.

I know the mechanics are nothing like it, but Kung Fu Strike kinda gave me a God Hand vibe with its outrageous martial arts combos--that and the way the attacks have that juicy God Hand beefiness to them.
