My dad smokes. He's otherwise fit, but he can't quit, and he's probably going to die from it as a result. Yeah, I have a vendetta against it.

That is completely your opinion. Sure it's dangerous and damaging, but it's awesome at the same time. You don't know because your not a smoker. There is not a whole lot in this world better than smoking a cig with a beer, or right after a meal, or after sex. Seriously.

I think these probably are effective in preventing more young people from smoking than motivating people already addicted to smoking.
That said, I really need to quit smoking. An ad isn't going to help no matter how disturbing it is. What's the best method? I'm not looking for the get some will power, I'm so bad ass I quit smoking cold turkey with no help kind of responses.
I've considered prescription drugs like Chantix, but I'm freaked out by the possible vivid nightmares side effect because a friend experienced it and said it was horrible. Other friends swear by E-cigs, but that's not really a cure since it still feeds the nicotine addiction. Both the gum and the patch haven't had high success rates with people I know either.

Completely agreed, there's definitely a lot of pleasure involved with smoking, none-smokers just wouldn't understand. Smoking a cig after getting high is just pure awesome. But obviously I'm aware smoking is just terrible for my health, but god damn its tough to quit, damn chemicals!
Lighting one up after sex is also fucking awesome.

well, not saying its not justified in running the commercials for that specific problem. its just that when these commercials are run they're not very becoming on the overall picture.
i'm not even talking specifically about smoking there. i'm talking about scrutinizing something they do in their personal life that is perfectly legal to do. its like not being hired at a job because you watch American Idol on monday and tuesdays.

They (the commercials) remind me of something I saw in The Onion where some young smoker sees an old smoker in some diner or something and he is inspired to smoke even more. He says something like "This guy's doing great! He doesn't even have one of those holes in his throat!"

The overall picture is that multitudes of people die from smoking; this thread is about the justification of a rather creepy ad. I'm saying that painting a negative picture of smoking is good, because smoking is negative.
You can scrutinize things that are legal if you want, if you can buy the commercial space. It's what campaigning is for, haha. Not saying the prohibition was a good idea (at all; in fact, it was terrible), but Americans scrutinize things with cultural value that are legal all the time.

It's called logic. Smoking is bad. Kids look up to their parents. Kids see parents smoke and enjoy the "awesome" feeling. Kid smokes. Kid enjoys disease. Logic, not radical nonsense.
First off, don't try to tell me what to do. You're a complete idiot. I would sooner take advice from a pile of shit than some stranger on the internet comparing smoking to raping people.
Second off, I have a beautiful healthy daughter.
Third, I have almost completely switched to the ecig. One or two smokes a day at this point. Not really that big of a deal honestly. I will get completely off them, I don't like the fact that I'm addicted to nicotine, but that's the truth at this point. I've tried the cold turkey thing multiple times, made it about 3 months once, always fails. This ecig thing is actually really nice. I feel better, and I can scale down the nicotine content gradually.
If you want her to continue to be healthy you are going in the right direction by trying to quit.

my dad smoked all my life. i never smoked.
its not as cut and dry as you make it seem. It is up to the parent that smokes to make sure their kid doesn't smoke. My dad made sure of that. Just like any other parent who does or doesn't smoke.
and also, its radical and idiotic, quite literally, to be comparing a smoker to someone that is a rapist.
Honestly, most of my friends whose parents smoked ended up hating it and never picking it up.
That was exaggerated and overblown, fucking sue me, but get the point, both are bad, doesnt make them right.
And the argument of 'i turned out fine' is more ridiculous than anything i've said. Its a solid fact backed by ample statistics and evidence children of smokers are many more times likely to smoke. Sure they all dont but it's still a big influence.

There is a ton of people on GAF who grew up with parents who smoked and they grew up hating cigarettes because of it.

i would think that peer pressure is more of an influence than a parent that tells you to not smoke.
If parents don't tell you to not smoke, then of course it would be a factor. No shit.
and then there's this too. People are able to start smoking because they want to on their own, or maybe from influences that aren't normally seen as things that do.
I've been around smoking so much in my life and i absolutely despise it. But going so far as to call someone, a human being, the scum of the earth for no other reason than them smoking...

Guess what, it can work the other way around too. My mom is 1 of 4 children. One of them got addicted to cigarettes. Guess what? All of her children smoke cigarettes, but none of the other siblings children smoke.

Blaming parents who are smokers for their kids becoming smokers is kinda silly. It probably doesn't help, but in the end, people make the decision to start smoking on their own. If we're gonna blame someone, let's blame people who start smoking even when everyone knows how evil that shit is.
