Are you a pizza snob?

I'm from Naples, everything outside the my 50 km radius cannot be called a pizza.

Sure i'll eat it if you want but that simply is not a pizza.

Yeah, I'd say I am to a degree. Grew up in KC and there's are quite a few really good pizzerias. I'm all about mom and pop New York style pizzas myself. I will say that I love just about any pizza though, so I eat national brands sometimes too, especially because they are much less expensive.

What do you mean by "this area"? There are some decent places in Boston but outside of that its pretty slim pickings in the places I've been.

I live 30 miles north of Boston and there are like 8-10 pizza places (at least) in my small town of 30,000, and they are all average at worst with a couple being pretty good to great. It's not like my town is unique either. There are one or two decent places in most surrounding towns up in my area.

There are better than just 'decent' places in Boston too, imo.

Really? I'm sure this pizza from Philly would give it a run for its money.

I'm just saying I've seen some horrible stuff in different part of Massachusetts, specifically Western Mass, Worcester, and Cape Cod. Boston had some decent stuff as mentioned before.

Gotta go north of Boston, mang. I don't have a ton of experience with any of those three areas (except Boston obviously). I just did a quick Yelp search, and there are 20 pizza places within 2 miles of me, and half of them are at least decent to good from my experience.

Boston has a couple really great places up in the North End.

It's like there's different varieties of wine from different regions, each with its own snob.

Pizza has evolved beyond its birthplace.

That might be true, but NY pizza is still more like Franzia than it is a Buccella. There's no reason to be snobby about Franzia.

that's not the worst frozen pizza I ever had

blandness was its biggest problem

thought it was alright for a dollar, but I didn't buy it again either

there's one frozen pizza brand that was just garbage, and I can't remember which one it was. literally couldn't even finish eating it

wasn't even a store brand, was a national thing

tombstone, maybe? I don't recall
It couldn't have been tombstone because that's the God Savior of frozen pizzas.

I don't really like having much sauce in my pizza, our pizza joints here smother the crust with so much that it gives me heartburn. Papa Johns I order no sauce unless it's the cheeseburger/alfredo pizza.

Can't stand the taste of Little Ceasars pizza since the hot and ready's it tastes like it's half sauce, half bread with some cheese and pepperoni in between. Pizza hut is okay as long as they don't overcook the toppings.

Dominoes, is still kinda bad to me. Wouldn't mind trying New York style pizza.

I suggest using Yelp or other methods to research the areas. There is different kinds of pizza everywhere. As others have stated, for the most notable you are looking at the North End and Providence.

For a chain, you can just play it safe with Papa Ginos or Regina.

Of course there are exceptions from people who emigrated and those who have learned from them, that one doesn't look bad actually.

He's considered one of the best Italian chefs in the eastern US. He was trained in Bergamo and that is pizza from his chain of pizzerias. Really good pizza, had it last weekend during the Pope's visit.

I have lived a block away from this place for the last 4 years and have never been. It's supposed to be one of the best places in the world according to like, a bunch of magazines I've never read and people I don't really give a shit about.

If I haven't taken the 15 minutes to walk to this place and then wait the 1 1/2 hours to get "the best pizza in the world", I'm pretty sure I'm not a pizza snob.

Yeah Boston is one of the best places in the country to get Italian food..it'd be pretty surprising for them not to have at least a couple authentic pizza joints up in there excluding the American style places.

Heh, always hated Papa Ginos, my friends would order it constantly though.

I imagine the East coast Maritimes have fuck all for actual good pizza so I doubt I know the difference. Most does the trick, but there are a few places that are trash tier

what does this place think of Dominos
I would order from them a lot more if they gave me an option on their app or website to not put that messy garlic oil shit on the crust. You can tell them to leave it off on the phone, but then you don't get the online-only specials.

Before they started doing the garlic oil stuff, they were the #1 best pizza to eat cold the next day, if you got plain cheese or pepperoni.

Yes, but I only like bad pizza.

(What other people consider bad pizza is my favorite kind, and what other people consider good pizza I won't touch.)

Well aren't you just a pizza hipster?

No, pizza is like sex. Even when it's bad it's still pretty good.

Most of the time I agree with you. I disagree with Little Caesars because it gives me the worst heartburn and it woke me up in the middle of the night to make me throw up the last time I had it. And that will be the last time I ever eat it. Cici's is down there too, but their dessert pizza is pretty good.

I eat megabite or papa john's. I like the taste. Pizza is pizza to me. I haven't found pizza that makes me go WOW! I just go for things that are convenient or aren't totally greasy.

Had a couple slices from Sirrico’s in the New York New York casino while in Vegas this past week. Enjoyed it immensely. Last November I had a pie from Giordano's in Chicago. Definitely prefer NY style.

There's a place here in Houston called Barry's Pizza that gets quite a lot of praise. Haven't tried it yet. They partner up with the local breweries here, so I have every reason to check it out.

That said, I'm not a pizza snob. Probably a beer snob, though.

There are some places with good pizza in Houston. Try Pizaro's, Dolce Vita, Solario, or Bollo if you like Neapolitan style pizza.

If I'm going to order pizza I want it to be from a good local pizzeria. If I'm visiting someone and they order Papa John's or something I won't complain because that would just be obnoxious. I think it's incredibly silly to declare one style of pizza to be "the only real pizza" or to think that you can't find a good pizza except in a few cities.

Label that however you like.

Really? I'm sure this pizza from Philly would give it a run for its money.

I live in Philly (University City) and have gone to Pizzaria Vetri many times... it is great pizza... however, it does not hold a candle to anything around Naples (or the rest of Italy for that matter). Go to Italy and report back. When you have ingredients that were grown/processed literally miles away, sometimes that day and the pizza is assembled by somebody with generations of experience... it isn't even a fair fight.

Also, as a native New Yorker... our bad pizza is just as bad as every other city's bad pizza... duh. However, our "good pizza" is damn good. It also depends on what style of pizza you prefer. New York leans more neopolitan. We aren't too good at deep dish. You can't say one is empirically better than the other.

I'm not a pizza snob but I recognize the places that certain pizzas hold. It's not snobby to realize that Totinos party pizza should be reserved for broke college students, Little Caesars and CiCi's for when you're really really high and hungry and that the chains aren't even going to be as good as a well made local place.

They all have their place in the pizza world, but it does bother me when people here start claiming that some frozen pizza or something from Pizza Hut is the best pizza they've ever eaten. That's like saying McDonalds it's the best burger you've ever had. You can hold that opinion sure, but it just makes it look like you haven't really experienced much.

All pizzas have their purpose, but there is a clear order from Totinos to a well made local pie.

So what's everyone go-to Pizza place?

I've been really into Lunetta in Manhattan. Their highest tier supreme pizza has meatballs on it...it's fun trying to eat a slice of that without a fork and knife. They also have some of the best fries I've ever had, which was really unexpected.

I only avoid absolute shit-tier pizza like Little Caesar's or deep dish pizzas that are mostly made from slabs of Crisco like Jet's. Pizza is good for the most part. Even frozen stuff like Tombstone.

I thought we were friends.

This must have really pissed you off, though his family is from Naples ;-) 2014 though, so who won this year?

Seriously though, here in Melbourne/Australia there are heaps of new restaurants offering that style of pizza and the more the better. They're using DOC and DOP approved ingredients from Europe, and really doing a fantastic job. I've got Sicilian heritage so kind of think of myself as a bit of a food/pizza snob!

How can you go back to a shitty mass produced pizza with cheap toppings is beyond me.

My favourite pizza place https://instagram.com/pizzadasporto

I like pineapple as a topping. Sicilian heritage but I'm still an Aussie! Though you won't find one place serving this style that'll let you put pineapple on it. I save that for my homemade ones.

NYC pizza is world class, im on jersey and sometimes i go to the city just to buy pizza lol, pizza in jersey is terrible

As a lifetime NYer I can confirm.

Even bad NY pizza is good pizza.

Love Artichoke pizza and I use to go to this place called Carve when I lived in Hells Kitchen. Just massive slices and a huge variety.

I try and avoid Dominos and Little Caesar's altogether. But if I didn't have a choice, I'd eat them. I'm not a snob when it comes to toppings, I'm down with most of them.

I sure as hell am. I grew up with eating NYC pizza atleast once a week until I left to go to college in New England. What a dark 4 years that was. Papa Johns and Dominos everywhere. People not from a good pizza area just don't understand there is a difference.
NYC pizza isn't pizza. Chicago Deep Dish or die.

(I shouldn't be able to fold a slice like a taco)
