Are you even having fun with gaming?

This year I beat The Witcher for the first time, went through RE4 again, rebought Rise of Nations, jumped back into TF2, and just started Planescape Torment for the first time ever-

I'm having a fucking BLAST.

Street Fighter is pretty fun, yeah.

Spelunky is still my jam too. Killer Queen was the most fun I've had in years with a local multiplayer game.

I have fun looking at something that looks good.

To the people that talk about graphics and how they don't matter at all: does that apply to other mediums for you? Movies? TV?

Actually yes, I have far more fun watching an old film fromt he 60's or 1920's (Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi still are kings ;) and those Disney Adventure films rawr :)), than that I ahve with "Michael Bay's Transformers BOOOM ZOOOOM LOOK AT THAT SPLOSHUN!".

So in films.. YES, for me that does apply. For games not as much actually, there the technical aspect also comes into play. But it isn't as important to me as say good gameplay or fun.

It's 50/50 when it comes down to me having fun with games. Games like dota which considered stressful and exhausting...I have the most fun playing it.

Then there's games which seems more of a chore to clear a backlog like grid 2. I guess it all depends on how I'm feeling when I go into playing a game.

Something I've been thinking about the past few years. I saw this today.

"turbulent weather rolls in, skies thickening before bursting onto the roads. Crowds at the side of the track reach for their macs and umbrellas, winds tug at the trackside scenery while puddles form in the divots and dips of the road surface,"

"The heat from the sun dynamically melts the snow, with northern-facing surfaces reacting first."

and ppl seem to be losing their shit. Then there's No Sky Man game i checked out and ppl are going nuts for it, yet no one really knows how it plays. I was at a side chicks house last weekend and invited my boy over to cotch. He brought his PS4 and was eager to show me games like infamous and killzone. He was taking close ups of walls n shit and showing me excitedly.

But all this shit, at the end of the day just seems like people are playing games (GAF and enthusiasts) to be impressed on a technical/art level than having fun.

Take a step back for a min n really see if you're having fun with the games u play.

Just because people don't mention the obvious doesn't mean they somehow want to avoid gameplay. In that same topic, people discussed how that melting snow impacts a race.

No Sky Man trailer has gameplay, and people are discussing that. It's entirely possible to discuss gameplay through videos, images, or otherwise. We've been doing this for years. People don't have to constantly bring up old hat things to remind you that they enjoy the gameplay parts as well.

I have a serious problem, where the majority of my game-related free time is spent desiring a game that isn't out yet.

When an anticipated game finally does come out, I play the hell out of it for a few weeks tops and then go back to being sick of all my games, anxiously awaiting the next one.

I've been having fun--mostly thanks to Nintendo. They've released a lot of fun (if somewhat derivative) games in the last couple of years.

Also, I discovered Dark Souls last year, and it was marvelous.

...

However, I also think it's natural for a focus on graphics to occur in the wake of new hardware. Regrettably, due to typical launch games being of mediocre quality, graphics are often the major selling point. It seems to be the case with the X1 and P4, but that should improve pretty soon.

That's probably why most of us are here.

Anyway, with Dark Souls I've finally been able to find joy in gaming again after I had almost given up hope. Now playing through DS2 on PC and I've rebought a PS3 to play Demon's Souls since I didn't quite manage to understand the game back when I first tried it way back when.

The reason why I had almost given up hope is the immense popularity of the 'cinematic experience' in videogames. Those are fun for their 8 hour lengths, I admit, but they are not really games, are they? Thank god for From Software. And thankfully there's some other stuff on the horizon as well. Things like No Man's Sky.

loool

i think if people paid less attention to fanboyism, weird superiority complexes and the silly inflammatory statements that arise from the two.... they'd have more fun with games

I mean, when it comes to graphics, I can definitely enjoy the aesthetics of a game, and I feel like people are going to keep obsessing over realism until we actually hit the point of photography where every game that wants to be photoreal is photoreal.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a game on purely aesthetic terms though. I've spent a second or two gazing at a nice view in a video game, but that's never been the entire enjoyment of a game for me.

Sometimes I feel like people (myself included) play games just to complete them, as if it was some sort of task or job.

You hear statements all the time alluding to "beating" or "finishing" games to move on to something else, but I wonder if they're actually having any fun. Personally, I think oftentimes you have certain parts of a games that are fun (ie blowing up cars in Watchdogs) versus parts that really aren't (ie sneaking missions in Watchdogs).

I suppose "fun" isn't the only reason that people play games though. Some may do it for the story or the challenge or whatever, and most of the time it's probably an amalgamation of all those things.

My favorite games include ICO and Xenogears, but I'm not sure many parts (or even any) were "fun." I surely had more fun playing Mario Kart or something. But I would still place those two titles above anything else just because of the overall experience they provided me.

Depends on the game tbh, but as my kids are getting bigger I'm enjoying playing alongside with them which sparked up my interest in gaming once again.

Sure, a statement like that requires more explanation. But there's something to it. The way Uncharted 2 railroads you along a set path for instance... it makes for some incredible setpieces. But there's little actual interactivity to it and that's supposedly what's so special about the videogame medium.

Did you see that demo for the order 1886? Did you notice how they kept cutting away from the gameplay to show an annoying little cutscene? Much like with Max Payne 3...

It's fine to have a strong narrative in games, but at least I hope, going forward, devs are going to find ways to embed them more seamlessly or tell it through gameplay systems or there for you to find instead of having it shoved down your throat. Telling a great story doesn't mean you have to tell it exactly like the media that we know can tell great stories (books/films).

Of course, there's a place for everything and if it sells I guess I understand, but the last decade the balance has shifted perhaps a little bit too much in favor of the cinematic experience.

I'm having a blast since I left consoles and started pc retro-gaming. Hearthstone and Toca Race Driver 2 are my choices now. Gothic II is next, when I end my finals, after loving the first one some months ago.

Love my Vita so much.

I've got a little bit of everything on there.
PSX games, PSP games PS2 ports, PS3 ports, Vita exclusives...
It's like the ultimate portable Playstation... What PSP hoped to be.

I usually only play at night in bed, or while decompressing from a long day at night.

Currently playing through Borderlands 2 and having a blast!!!

Not with the types of games I used to enjoy. I used to love competitive FPS and open world games, and now they're the last thing I want to play(it also doesn't help that the releases in both genres have been pretty terrible as of late imo)

I do still go through the act of buying/playing games that I dont really give a shit about just to see if theres something there (Mario Kart 8 is the most recent) and yeah I still dont care

But I still have a ton of fun with many different games in many different genres and on many different platforms.

I just took some time to refocus and find what my interests are.

Yeah, I have a lot of fun playing games. Lately I've been having a ton of fun with Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Bravely Default, Ace Attorney, and more.

Games are fun. I wouldn't play games if I didn't find them fun.

As long as i can play games like a story about my uncle from time to time for palate cleansing, i´m gonna have fun, and playing speedruners or the lego games with my seven year old daughter is the best cure against cynisim ever

I think there are plenty of games in both camps - lots of strictly gameplay focused titles as well as more "on rails" cinematic games like U2. Games like Bloodborne getting as much hype as U4 is a good sign of this.

But I don't think U2 is any less of a game because of this, though I do think highly of games like the Ace Attorney Trilogy so maybe "enjoyment" should be a better barometer than "interactivity."

Yup.

But I enjoy graphics and immersion every bit as much as the gameplay.

Hate the silly notion that it has to be gameplay vs graphics.

I'm having a great time! I haven't gamed this much since I got the NES in '85. I have the PS4, Xbone, 360, Ouya, and Vita and have been playing the hell outta all of them the last 6 months. It's a total gaming renaissance for me lately.

I struggle with this a lot. I spend a ton of time on this site and others, as well as getting all excited about upcoming games and planning what I want to buy.

But as the years have gone by, I look at my list of hundreds of games that I have bought and look at the amount of those I would consider a "8/10" or in other words games that were worth my time and money. After comparing the amount of crap I have wasted time on and the games I enjoyed, sometimes I feel like quitting completely.

I never thought I'd say it, but I may have to get to the point that I only buy a few AAA games a year. Even though I know I will miss out on some sleeper hit, I have to just let it go. Otherwise I am really going to get burned out on all the crap I have to play in the hunt for the elusive hidden gem.

The last game I enjoyed was Far Cry 3, and before that Skyrim. There were at least 40 other games I have tried in that time span, and I can't think of any that were "fun".

Depressing, I guess. I have recently chopped my wish list of future games in half. If I don't expect it to be top shelf stuff, I am not going to buy it, even for $5.

I'm having fun.
At the moment I'm enjoying...

Wonder boy III: The dragon's trap - Love the graphics and colours of this game. Love the sounds of SMS and wonder boy has absolutely wonderful collection of tunes. Just got the cables to plug in SMS to myHD-tv and it's amazing.

Panzer dragoon saga - this is going to be my next project after WB. Can't really describe how wonderful this experience was as a teen. At the time it was graphically overwhelming to me and also my first rpg.

Mario kart 8 - So good. It's a beauty.

I might have misunderstood the question. but yes, i'm having fun and finding beaty in many different graphical styles is rewarding

I'm also playing a variety of different types of games now the old me would have scoffed at. I'm playing sports games and shooters, not just RPGs and survival horror like the old me.

you know.. recently I'd say "so-so"... until Xenoblade Chronicles.

Yes, I am having a shitload of fun playing Xenoblade.

On my PS4? No, not actually, now that you mention it. But I recently got a Wii U and all the games I've played so far have been super enjoyable. The most fun I've had in the past 2 months have been MK8 on my Wii U and playing Halo Reach on my friend's Xbox over splitscreen and with XBL. Watching him play Dark Souls for the first time is also fun >:-D

Yes, just be more selective with games you try (I have a PS4 since dayone and still have to buy the first game for it XD).

Yes. I'm sure it's due to a lot of factors, like the fact that I don't have much time to play games anymore so I'm not burned out and have a huge backlog of quality games available at any given moment.

The Wii U is my only home console and it's been out long enough that it's got an awesome catalog of games, especially ones that are fun to play with my wife and friends, and Nintendo's kind of known for focusing on "fun" first, and it shows.

Yeah. But what would really make a lot of gamers like myself happy, is to go back to the days before the Wii/PS3/360 era. Meaning:

  1. Lots of Japanese 3rd party games on consoles.
  2. No more DLC, On-Disc DLC, Microtransactions, DRM, etc.
  3. Making a lot of Mid-Tier titles, & sell them at retail for $40.
  4. Loads of diversity within genres. Not just FPS's & Sports titles.

lol @ side chicks house.

But yeah, don't even have too much time to game these days due to wife, hobbies etc.
I tried to play on ios but realized being competitive in stupid F2P games is a huge timesink.
Going to get back to my vita and consoles in my spare time.
Barely used my ps4 but after e3, it looks like the Wii U is the place to be (for quick fun).

I drop games that aren't fun. I recently bought the Telltale BTTF game, and that was a bore, so I put it down right away. I don't have the time to be bothered by boring games.

Played the intro to Bioshock Infinite again, just for fun. Funny how the best part of the game is when you aren't shooting everything that moves.
