Are you even having fun with gaming?

Hell to the yes, playing video games is my favorite hobby in life.

There are so many different, unique experiences out there allowed to us only through playing video games.

And for me, having fun will always take priority whenever I play a game.

Mostly retro-gaming SNES and PSX right now and enjoying about one hour a day. Not the slightest interested in new glossy stuff.
Will never buy PS4 or Xbone.

graphics for me have always helped enhance the experience because games are usually moving artwork (you can litterally see that when you look at the artwork in the developer diaries and how close the games are coming to fully reproducing what the artist originally created as a concept). One thing i noticed, which is new to me, after having just build my first pc its hard playing my ps4. i feel like its technically inferior and i hate myself for feeling that way. I though that the people that complain about graphics and frames per second don't really get what games are all about but now that im playing everythign maxed out its very jarring playing anything less. the first thing i promised myself when building a pc was not to become a pc snob but nice graphics are addicting and so it can become a major focus for many people.

Ya its the same for me but at this point I always buy at the end of a consoles life. I just picked up my first 360 actually

The day I stop having fun with gaming is the day I stop gaming. It's the whole point. I love my hobby and while I don't love the current gaming climate, the games themselves keep on delivering.

We have possibly the greatest year of gaming ahead next year and if nothing worthwhile ever comes out after that, I'll still be a happy gamer, because there is an immense backlog of amazing games of yesteryear that I still want to play before I die.

I fucking love games and I doubt I'll ever stop loving them.

Yep. Dark Souls, Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Link's Awakening, etc have been primarily occupying my gaming time as of recently and I love em all. Brilliantly put together games to play alone or in groups, most of which aren't really impressive on a technical level, they're just fun as hell to play.

Yes. Rather than being bored and tired with the standard AAA fluff, I'm branching out and finding stuff outside that bubble to fill my needs.

I have a marginal amount of time to play games nowadays. It's made me more selective of my gaming experiences.

  • Co-op - Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Eternal Sonata
  • Pickup & Play - StreetPass Games, Zen Pinball, Retro City Rampage
  • SRPG - Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem Awakenings, Shining Force
  • Acclaimed Games - Xenoblade Chronicles, Legend of Zelda, Demon's Souls
  • Unique Gaming Experiences - Flower, Killer 7, Animal Crossing:New Leaf

These days it seems like the games i genuinly enjoy are far, few, and in-between . Maybe it's just because i'm busier lately or that there ust aren't games that appeal to me but it's becoming somewhat bothersome that i can't find games i want to play on a regular basis. only games that i want in the foreseeable future of 2014 are Sunset Overdrive, CoD Advanced Warfare, Crimes and Punishment: Sherlock Homes and Halo The Master Chief Collection. which is sad because i'd like to play other AAA games that aren't shooters, but nothing so far has interested me enough from a gameplay perspective for me to bite.

Always have, always will. Though I can see your point, internet forum/social media culture has definitely made discussion of games pretty toxic: Too much focus on everything around the game and not enough about the enjoyment of the game. Too many people looking hungrily for reasons to hate/negatively criticize a game for attention rather than to just enjoy it. Now everyone seems to need to justify their enjoyment of a game based on some technical/social criteria so that their reaction is a statement of fact rather than a circumstantial opinion.

This hobby isn't for everyone. If you don't have fun gaming, just do something else with your life.

Also I hope your wife is ok with your "side chick" arrangement. Otherwise not cool.

Having more fun with my (recently purchased) Wii than I ever did with my 360. Metroid Prime Trilogy, Zelda: Wind Waker, Timesplitters 2, Xenoblade, F-Zero GX, my cup runneth over. Furthermore there's something about having an actual complete game that works out of the box that makes me enjoy it in a different way.

I'm having more fun with games these days than ever before. I look forward to more and more too.

Sure there are some shitty practices too. But honestly they don't get in the way of my enjoyment. I'm seriously baffled by the amount of negativity on GAF sometimes. Just chill, enjoy some video games. They are pretty cool.

Right now, not really. I play a little Forza 5 Nurburgring and Wind Waker HD. I also dabble in WildStar but fear I played a little too much and fell out of it. I've been spending most of my Summer time skateboarding and doing some off-semester study for school.

*raises mountain dew*

Loads of fun, recent Destiny Alpha weekend reinforced this feeling even more. The line between fun and grinding is thin sometimes, though.

I would not be playing if i was not having fun. Being sucked in the world you are playing, with how pretty and well crafted it is can add to enjoyment. That comes in all forms, from photo realistic worlds to one that are just pixel art. Sure some people take it overboard but you can enjoy different things about something aside from the pure fun of it.

I went through a period where I wasn't playing anything at all. I was just completely disillusioned with the direction the industry was headed. Everything is stating to mesh in this big brown and gray mush of samey looking and playing games. The big budget triple A scene is especially guilty of this. I'm just over the grim and gritty dark "cinematic experiences."

During E3, Jim Sterling posted something that kind of crystallized why my feelings when he noted how often games are unveiled with just CG trailers with no gameplay to speak of. It just feels like the current direction of the industry is focusing more and more on graphics, story, and cinematic experiences and less on modes of play. That is not to say I don't think narrative is important or that games shouldn't look good. Nor am I saying that every game needs to reinvent the wheel when it comes to gameplay. Innovation is great when it happens, but it need not be forced. I'll take a highly polished but familiar experience any day.

All that said, I am getting back in the saddle, so to speak. Replaying Fire Emblem: Awakening, and I like to unwind with a little Injustice when I can. There's a lot of indie games I'm looking into as well, and I can't wait for Smash 4. I still think video games are fun. I just think my desires no longer match up with those players most of the industry is currently focused on pleasing.

I always have fun playing games. The game itself doesn't have to be graphically satisfying, I care more about the story, environment and gameplay.

I don't enjoy gaming anywhere near as much as I did only 5 years ago, it takes a really special game to interest me these days.

Sometimes I get tired of them and feel like I'm just going through the motions. That's why I feel taking a break from gaming every once and a while can be really beneficial.

Sometimes, but you can't force fun out of a game. I had a damn good time with Dark Souls 2, but then I played an hour of 'Remember Me' and was like *fuck this*

Then there's No Sky Man game i checked out and ppl are going nuts for it, yet no one really knows how it plays.

The only people who don't know how NMS plays are those who're incapable of processing what they have just read or heard.

NMS dev: You can just wander around exploring on a planet, discovering new species and locations (and killing them if that is your thing), or go in to space and help defend or attack an armada. With the rewards gained from that, or collecting and shipping resouces in the freighter you bought, you can upgrade your ship or suit to help you go further into the Universe. The game isn't going to tell you what to do as such as we believe in the player finding their own way.

People incapable of processing information: Yeah. But how does it play!? What do I do!?

Yeah, I am having a great time playing games. The last few games I completed were Virtue's Last Reward, Persona 4 GOLDEN and Muramasa Rebirth. I am currently playing Okami HD and Pixel Junk Shooter Ultimate and am having a super fun time doing so.

Pretty bored with gaming at the moment. There's no good racing games to play. Forza 5 was a pathetic excuse for an online racing game.

It's a big gaping hole in current offerings.

Forza 5 - I don't own a XB1, also microtransactions
NFS - I own this, and it sucks for multiple reasons including 'not being fun', 30fps robbing it of a sense of speed, and the irritation of other people racing on the same roads. I say racing but it's more like a stop motion clusterfuck of cars due to poor net code.
Driveclub - 30fps.
Project Cars - a hope, but actually I'm not a huge sim fan.

I'd kill for a new 60fps Midnight Club with a mix of wide and narrow roads like MC2 had.

This question seems to imply that the only reason games exist is to be "fun", or innately pleasurable to the player. Interestingly enough, the games I find myself enjoying the most change me in some way, or make me learn something about myself, often leaving me feeling introspective or even despondent.

The same concept applies to a movie or a book. When I watch Schindler's List, I am not having fun. When I read something like The Road, I am also not having fun. Watching Schindler's List or reading The Road isn't a pleasurable experience, but valuable nonetheless, as I have learned something about human nature.

That being said, when I play something like Metal Gear Rising or Bayonetta, i'm not expecting to get anything particularly meaningful out of the experience, I just want to see things get cut in half and/or explode. So I guess the OP just needs to play different games to achieve the "fun" he's seeking.

I'm fairly bored with it right now. I'm just doing a bit of gaming here and there when I feel like it.

None of the games I have seem that appealing to me at the moment.

Infamous was a very fun game but it's not a pick up and have fun kind of game which I realized when playing around friends. Not that fun to watch either. Same for Killzone.

But I think the WiiU is more along the lines of what you're looking for.

I'm currently having a hella good time playing Ni No Kuni. Getting addicted to catching familiars and levelling them up. What a fantastic game this is.

I think my problem is that I just have too many games.
I used to buy a game and play the shit out of it, you know really master it. Now between humble bundles, Steam Sales, GWG and ps+ I have nearly 20 unplayed games (and five times as many yet to be installed) I find I treat games as far more disposable and small bite experiences. Sadly I collect mote than play. :(

Yeah its hard to get that excitement unless the game is brand new. I need to fix that...

Having fun but i am way more selective in what i play/purchase. Eg - i got max curse of the brotherhood and the Halo Spartan assault game free - they both were pretty average so i stopped halfway.

Titanfall i loved at first..but no one is playing hardpoint now and it takes ages to find a game on XB1...so yeah..no go.

I loved wolfenstein, but the best game i have played in the last year or so has been Transistor. Absolutely amazing game.

if a game gets good reviews but it listed as "short" i usually consider it a positive working a full time job and being pretty busy in general.

Having tons of fun with games right now. I get a little caught up on the whole 30fps thing but I'm a PC gamer and I feel like I've been sold an inferior product if it's locked to 30. I'm also extremely excited for No Man's Sky because it sounds like a game that is extremely well made by a small group of very talented guys. The amount they've talked about how their procedural generation works has been fascinating and I love that there are still games where people use a lot of complicated mathematics to create. Dota 2 also exists, and there is nothing more fun to me than playing the shit out of some Dota.

I hardly play nowadays, yet I still buy games when I see a really good deal. I think Ive transitioned to being more collector than gamer, and I can't pinpoint the exact moment that transition began. This is the first generation where I have absolutely no desire to buy the latest systems. Why would I with a huge backlog spread across like 10 consoles? I did buy a Wii U and amassed a small collection of games that were all bought really cheap, but beyond that ps4 and xbone do not appeal, and ps3 /360 still takes care of my gaming needs when the urge hits once or twice a month. None of my closest friends play much nowadays and none have upgraded, everyone is married and got jobs, so theres another factor in my decreased enthusiasm for gaming.

Theres a part of me that just wants to sell it all, or sell most of it, and hold onto a few favorites that I can concentrate on. Im beginning to wonder if I simply have too much choice that I end up not playing nothing. The last game I completed was god of war 3 four months ago( been in my backlog for 3 years), and it felt more like a relief when I finished it. *ok, scratch that off the list*. That defeats the purpose of gaming if you feel compelled to play something just to justify its space on the shelf. The OCD gamer in me wants to own and play through everything, but its just not possible and something I have to accept.

I have fun looking at something that looks good.

To the people that talk about graphics and how they don't matter at all: does that apply to other mediums for you? Movies? TV?

That's a strange comparison, despite them all being entertainment media. More often than not, CGI in movies and television is supposed to trick you into thinking that the aliens/dinosaurs/destroyed buildings/et cetera are no less real than the actors.

That's not really a thing in games, at least I hope it isn't. As long as the world is aesthetically uniform, I could give a rat's ass about better ways to make things look like real life--frankly, I hate it when games try to be realistic all the damn time. All I want is something that plays good first.

Of course, that's just me.

To answer the OP:

All the games I own I own because I have fun playing them. Fun and games go hand in hand. Even horror games are about having fun by being scared out of your wits.

Last time I owned a Nintendo console was the Gamecube. Just picked up a Wii U today and have been playing New Super Mario Brothers and Mario Kart. After playing those two games,I realize I wasn't bored with gaming. I was bored with the KIND of games I was playing.

What kind of games were you playing? I ask because I wonder if that's the issue with me. I'm getting bored with shooters and sandbox games, especially the latter. The most recent I played was one of the Assassin's Creed games. I could see that objectively, it was a finely crafted game, but I was honestly bored enough to give up on it halfway through. I think the whimsical nature of Nintendo games, the simplicity, is what makes them so fun. Perhaps I need to pack away my xbox/ps3 and focus on the Wii U for a while, that will give me some indication of whether my issue is the 'kind' of games I've been playing too.

Multiplayer is where the most fun is.

Well, that's like.....your opinion, man.......

I find single player games to be a lot more fun than multiplayer. What I look for in games now is an interesting narrative and fully fleshed out world. Plus, other players just get your way and ruin things. They cheat, or sing into the mic, or generally annoy me. I'm not saying I don't enjoy multiplayer games, I just find single player to be way more enjoyable and fun.

I feel like, and hope, the oculus rift will save gaming for me. I mean, it's not in any real danger of dieing to me, but I just need this new experience. So thirst for it.
