Are you okay with Microtransactions if it makes Multiplayer season passes go away?

That was a PC thing and I have always been a console gamer. Not sure why that matters, the best option for consumers is to have all the content upfront without the extracurricular BS. I don't buy season passes or story DLC which often is cut content to sell to the player later.

Not even a fair comparison. Completely different paradigms -- pre-digital expansions vs. modern DLC.

The basic premise is the same: some DLC is not developed until well after the original game has completed development, and simply waiting for "everything to be completed first" could add months to years more time to the schedule. Not all DLC are simple unlock keys to get to stuff already in the original game release.

Yes in some cases it can be abused in various ways already cited in the thread, but not all DLC content released is like that. And given that this is the reality of today's industry in terms of delivering post-release content, several of us don't mind if it means we can get quality expansions in the cases where things do work out well.

The cases where multiplayer-related season passes do work out well, like with Mario Kart 8 or stuff that's strictly cosmetic, and that hopefully are examples other developers can follow. There's still the issue of fragmenting your multiplayer base in terms of new maps or characters or whatever, but this was also the case with expansion packs in the pre-digital day and isn't exactly a new issue introduced.

Im fine with it as long as the microtransaction stuff is purely cosmetic. That and as long as they don't get too aggressive about shoving the microtransactions in your face.

As long as the game isn't way too grindy. It certainly will be somewhat grindy because they want to sell packs, but don't make it a job.

Absolutely. Season passes break up the community. Cosmetic microtransactions do not. Rocket league. TF2, CSGO have already been proved it successful. Maps for free luxury cosmetic items at a premium.

Doesn't Siege lock playable characters behind a pay/grind-wall, still? That's not too great IMO. That's as bad as SFV. People who drop money have more options than you straight up.

Games where all non-cosmetics are equally accessible and where cosmetics can be bought directly or earned like dota2 and CSGO do this best. Overwatch is tier 2 despite loot box whine. I don't give a fuck about cosmetics and don't care about gambling addicts and kids with parents' credit cards. Someone who is looking to spend no extra money beyond the initial purchase is going to have a good time with that game and get free cosmetics along the way without missing out on anything. The only thing is that you can't directly buy the specific cosmetics you want. Titanfall 2 is also tier 2, better for some who want to buy what they want but worse for people who don't pay anything at all, since the cosmetics would be completely inaccessible for them.

Separate playlists due to DLC maps is some dumb shit in CoD. BRB Jim you can't play with us because we want to play DLC maps today, sorry bud! Also they do microtransactions on top of that. lmao Straight trash.

So you value being able to choose exactly what to get cosmetically (Dota 2 kind of, chests have no dupes but it's still a small dice roll until you buy enough to get each set in there) slightly higher than earning free but random loot (Overwatch)?

TBH I'm not sure which way I lean there. For Dota I've spent a good chunk of money over the years on compendiums and chest sets that are cool. I've basically fallen completely off that train and just use what I've got nowadays, but the "no dupes" change was pretty good for a while. I think there is still technically free drops but they are very rarely anything cool. There's actually very little that can be "earned" in Dota 2 these days, it's all tied to their compendiums and season tickets or whatever they are called, as well as individual chests (which cannot be earned AFAIK).

For Overwatch I don't know if I've been very lucky or what, but I'm only around account level 80 with 3500+ currency and plenty of legendaries strewn across the cast. I think unless you are going crazy for the seasonal stuff, OW is pretty reasonable with what they give you in terms of "paid" cosmetics for free. Sucks that it's random and it sucks that the dupe "compensation" is so low, but in the grand scheme of things people can generally get what they want within a reasonable time frame, at least in my experience. And while the currency values are bad you can still accrue it after playing a-lot-but-not-really-THAT-much and pick out something you REALLY want, which is a cool option to have.

Why can't we just get the whole thing up front like we used to get? Where all these skins and other things were actually part of the game, as rewards to finding secrets or doing things within the game.

Why can't they release maps and other little things for free to the fans like they used to?

When they need more money why can't they release actual expansions that contain a little thing called content for said money and not simply a little "fluff" for like 10 bucks.

I would prefer a subscription model.

I dislike microtransactions because you know there is a sales guy in the publishing company pushing for a premium loot pack with gameplay altering gear. The potential for game breaking is high. I despise any gambling-like microtransactions. It strikes me as immoral and questionably legal at best.

Season passes are only slightly better. The problem with most of them is that they sell you them without describing what you are getting. That's blatantly consumer unfriendly, but so far I haven't seen it abused as much as similar pitches for other goods.

Because dedicated servers and continued development costs money. The cost of entry no longer covers all that for the life of the game. People play these games for hundreds to thousands of hours. Also the games that do it well have plenty of free cosmetic items or ways to get them for free that don't include buying anything. These updates are much better than expansion that divide the community.

If they do them like Overwatch or R6 where the maps are free and characters obtainable through in game currency, then I don't really care. If I like the game and spend a lot of time on it I'd pay for the micro transactions. Shit I spent about 100 dollars on Overwatch loot boxes and I own the R6 season one pass. Only reason I didn't buy the second one is because I don't play it anymore.

I've spent over 150 dollars on cosmetics in rainbow six, so theyre definitely making a lot of money this way. Hopefully it happens. Fragmenting the community is never helpful and let's the game die that much faster.

Wouldn't subscriptions cost more in the long run though? Since you gotta buy the game, and then pay monthly?
Already have to pay for online for every system. lol...

NOPE

For the amount of content $60 games offer upfront right now microtransactions are not fucking cool, especially when they're RNG-based FUCKING GAMBLING systems easily accessible by and in some cases directly marketed to kids.
