Are you satisfied with current direction of Final Fantasy?

@ D.Final D.Final : Like danielberg said, not everyone is going to like your favourite game and you need to accept that. Making post like that just going to bring more hate towards your favourite game.

lol, plant a billboard in front of your house i can't see!

Luckily there are also normal players in the world.
And also many great videogames fans.

You, on the other hand, are just a FAKE-GAMER AND AN A SHAME FOR THE PLAYERS OF THE WORLD, PATHETIC, AND UNNECESSARY "FAKE-GAMER" IN YOUR "FAKE" WAY OF JUDGING ANYTHING.
ACT TO THE ONLY PURPOSE OF TAKING THE GAME OF THINGS, OF THE PLAYERS, AND OF THE VIDEOLUDICAL WORKS.

Because, if you did not know it yet,
FINAL FANTASY XV IS CONSIDERED BY MANY GAMER, A MASTERPIECES OF THIS GENERATION.

And your feeble, silly attempt to belittle the game, and the opinions of those who have appreciated it, is just as pathetic.......

So, shut up at least!

What I'm trying to saying is, that it's ok to have a personal opinion.
But it is difficult to be able to give a personal opinion (above all positive) on the game, if then you are attacked and accused continuously by those who think differently.

Because Final Fantasy XV has excellent qualities, and I want to be free to express and give my opinion without being attacked by those who think differently from me.

If the people will begin to learn to apcepting the opinions opposite of the other people, without attacking them, the world would be a better place.

Like it or not FFXV is very divisive game. There are people absolutely hated how gameplay works and some people love it. Also when put giant text saying "masterpiece" or "game of generation" you screaming "come hate my game".

Last FF game I played was XIII.

I would like to see FF return to solely numbered installments. No spin-offs nor sequels.

Release them about every 3-5 years and if you're going to do a remake/remaster, outsource it to another company.

Dedicate your devs to focusing on one project at a time.

As far as the games themselves, like I said XIII was the last one I played and to be honest I don't think it was that bad. I liked the music and gameplay. Wasn't too crazy about the characters. Oddly enough I felt the opposite of XII. Liked the characters/story, hated the gameplay.

Combine XII/XIII and I'll have a nice overall experience apparently haha

I would like to see a return to turn-based combat (XIII at the least). At this point, I don't think it would hurt them to return to some of the classic feel that made people enjoy the series to begin with and to make callbacks to the fantay/magical feel of say IV/IX.

Calm it down a bit in here. Whether you think a game is good or not is an opinion and is neither right or wrong. There's no need for caps lock responses and angst. You're not going to change anyone's opinions that way.

Final fantasy was better during 1-6. Graphics and cgi cutscene ruined it. They are more linear now and the characters are lame.

No, not really. It felt like a Kpop version of GTA without the atmosphere that made GTA immersive. The combat was interesting and the graphics were gorgeous, but I'm tired of squaresoft's boyband characters.

My all time favorite are the games VI-IX, XII, and some of XIII. What bugs me is that I never got attached to Noctis as a character. Maybe because he's a modern day prince. I remember getting goosebumps when the trailer said "it's been a long time coming.." and then liking the song "Too Much is Never Enough" more than I did the cast of characters. XII was one of the best moments I had before last gen started. I even bought an Angela Aki CD from Play-Asia after that.

I think what did me in was that I imported Final Fantasy XIII and played it all in Japanese. I finished it because it was a pretty easy game. I don't understand Japanese either. I messed around with XIII-2 and Lightning Returns, but they couldn't keep my interest. I got kinda bored of the cast and the plot. No offense to those who enjoy it. I just had a huge helping when XIII was out.

I played XV Realm Reborn until I about became a Dragoon. I loved that, but I wanted to buy games instead of a subscription. I absolutely loved what they did with XI, but I never devoted a ton of time to playing it outside the 360 beta.

I own Final Fantasy 1-15 and 1-9 I have on my iPhone. I love the themes to Final Fantasy and the aesthetics. I even saw the Music of Final Fantasy when they came into town.

I'm kinda at a loss. I didn't really feel like Square-Enix had made a Final Fantasy for everyone. They sure claimed they did. I liked pitching a tent in Final Fantasy, but having a tent and making recipes wasn't my thing.

I miss Final Fantasy. Hell, I went into Best Buy and bought Final Fantasy IX the day it came out. I even recorded the final battle in Final Fantasy VII on VHS. Final Fantasy VIII's cover and the cast of characters were awesome to look at.

I can say I don't feel that strongly about Noctis as I did Squall or Cloud. I've owned the various spinoff games on PS2, DS and PSP. I kinda wish they would go back and do what they did with Final Fantasy IX. Squaresoft even said they were "taking it back". A part of me wishes they'd make these games more like Final Fantasy XII. A mature supporting cast and intelligent dialogue. Another idea is do what IX did and fill it with a huge fantasy world worth exploring. Final Fantasy IX and even VIII had these huge open worlds with different areas to explore. Setting off on adventure and knowing that 3/4 of the road is the same damn path is frustrating. I never wanted to get out of my car in Final Fantasy XV. I wanted to just get to that next cutscene, praying to God that I get a Summon or fight an interesting boss. I got to the factory in Final Fantasy XV with the turrets and I shut it off. It was more work than it was an enjoyable ride. I will say this, Final Fantasy XV had some nice scale to it. It made me super excited for Kingdom Hearts III.

Hell no. Everything went downhill since FFX. Horrible direction with combat, art direction, ... everything! I'm sick of playing feminine androgynous types. Fuck outta here

A realm reborn is the only real final fantasy game out there

LOL! YESSS!!!

Well they did have you as a guy this time. Maybe they'll have it in a setting like FFXII / FFIX, with a guy as the main character? Could happen. They've done the future stuff for 2 games, I see them going in a different direction for the next...(hopefully)

They need some balance.

No, not really. It felt like a Kpop version of GTA without the atmosphere that made GTA immersive. The combat was interesting and the graphics were gorgeous, but I'm tired of squaresoft's boyband characters.

Well Final Fantasy pre-dates GTA in terms of being open world, the original Final Fantasies are open world btw

I think they did an amazing job with world, setting etc Only a few narrative things I had an issue with.

ie He's a Prince, yet walks into a gas station and no one knows who he is? Even when they call him the price some times, they act like he's just a nobody. That would be like Drake walking into a gas station and they like "hi Drake, how can I help you?" (no one gets up and goes crazy)

Even worse, a WAR is going on and folks seem to be Witcher 3 level of dumb, def and blind and I don't mean that in a mean way, I legit mean they behave as if you don't exist. Besides that, I felt the world was crafted really, really well and would love to see how they use those concepts in their next FF title.

"without the atmosphere that made GTA immersive." They need to work on that 10 fold. What GTA or Elder Scrolls does in terms of amazing NPC design by default should be how MOST design NPC.

Someone running away from you cause you are swining a sword like a mad man should not be a GTA concept, that is of a logical evergreen concept that MOST if not all games need to address as it simply entertains that its ok to have these braindead NPC that just stand around.

GTA3 came out in 2001, no reason that in 2015 and 2016 we got games coming out, open world and have NPC that seem like they don't even know you exist lol

Agreed.

I know you about that JRPG life too so I don't think its simply mindless hate. I mean damn, I like the game, bought it day 1, 80 hours and completed it (no DLC though I'm not about that life for this game) and I feel its not a masterpiece. I mean, it could have been, but the game play elements could be better, story could be better, world in terms of NPC design could be better.

The game has someone as Prince and in one scene I'm walking around a person, TALKING ABOUT THE CHARACTER completely blind to me standing RIGHT in front of them.

So if they got Platinum to do the gameplay in terms of movement. Better.
They made the NPC actually understand you exist an mob you to take fan pics or even just run up to you. Better
Make the story simple enough to that it actually makes sense, even if it was just the classic Evil uncle funa kill the nephew after they kill the brother to take their place as King......better.

I like it, but so many things could have been better, that I find myself WISHING it wasn't the way it was. Thats not me hating FFXV, thats me being honest about it.

If we want FFXVI to be a "masterpiece" we need to recognize that FFXV wasn't and what needs to be corrected. In 2016, we shouldn't need several pieces of DLC, a movie and ANOTHER game to explain the story of 1 game. That doesn't tell me its a good story, it tells me its so bad, the developer is jumping around trying to fix what folks are asking in terms of such a strange and bad story.

Even when folks tell me "it was rushed" 10 years isn't rushed....if they need more time to make a better story, their issue isn't time, its that they are trying to piece together the base of a BAD STORY! That isn't normal that someone is making a damn game for 10 years, let alone needing MORE TIME after the fact. That tells me too many things went wrong with FFXV's development that impacted th game. I still like it , would still buy it day 1 full price no questions asked, doesn't mean it was without issue.

I think that choice is a balancing act. Characters roaming off in the distance or shivering with fear. I pull out my gun by accident in Red Dead Redemption and they either warn me to put it away or they start running/shooting. Maybe Square feared technical problems during those scenes. How would a central HUB be utilized if everyone just packed their stuff and left? Why would a shop keeper keep selling the same items over and over if a war was occurring? They'd literally need to track merchants down as they travel or buy a stock of stuff on the way there. When things are peaceful like that, it allows freedom before heading to game changing events.

I like how Dark Souls does NPC's. You can do whatever you want, just don't hit them. Lol

True.

I love that about GTA, Red Dead, Fallout, Elder Scrolls etc

I disagree with this, RPG open world does not need to be as detailed as sandbox. What they need to focus is "thing" to explore like: hidden boss, hidden quest, item...or put some high level enemy in lower zone to show off or make a surprise when exploring. Dont waste resource on thing that does not needed in your game.

The best RPG open world to date is Xenoblade Chronicles X. In this game you can explore every fragments, each fragments will content something hidden mentioned above. And they also have the great BGM for day/night cycle in each zone

FF XV have some great qualities and I loved it quite a lot. But not for being a FF, that's for sure.

I enjoyed it for the adventure feeling, the music, the enviroments, the combat, and the bro company.

But the story, the amazing and beliavable characters, and pace, were just not there. And that's what FF should always have no matter what, imho.

D.Final D.Final Dude I understand you like the game, It's my friend's favourite FF too, but even he doesn't discuss basic points of why FFXV is a bunch of good ideas badly executed. I don't mean to offend you but that post that said "you ate shit for soo long now it tastes good for you" is somehow real with you.

Also, lots of your points kinda proves you haven't played enough Jrpg's or story driven rpgs. Literally every jrpg released this generation is better than FFXV in everything except for the artistic part. Shit not true, Octopath traveler was even better at the artistic part.

Do you know that there is no Final Fantasy that has ever had an alchemical element of composition of the spells like in Final Fantasy XV?

So you never used Rikku on FFX? Or the Chemist on FFV? I thought you played every ff game and you loved them all...this or you are so blind with FFXV you even forgot a basic FF JOB that is the chemist.

Even Bravely Default does that much better than FFXV's poor man's magic mixing.

@topic
definitely not. Final Fantasy got worse and worse. And while I thought it can't get worse, FF XV appeared and was just worse.
This is no longer Final Fantasy.
- No Turn-based combat system (not even the slightest)
- No chacters to choose
- No story to speak of
- Characters were dull and had not background to speak of.
- No "real" magic system to speak of
- No "real" summons
...

I really wish they would return to their roots with their mainline series. There are many people and fans of the series that like the series for what it was. Why did they completely change a series. Why not just make another spin-off instead (as it was originally planned).
A series should never completely change it's mainline genre, as the fans loved it for what it was. Modernize something is something else than completely change it. If you want to make something different, just create a new name or at least make a spin-off instead using the mainline name to boost sales.

Simple answer : no.

I've stopped after FFX. I know I've only finished FF IX (which is stellar in my opinion), but I liked what I've played of FF 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8. 12 didn't interest me much because of the loss of turn-based combat ; I played some demos of FF XIII and XIII-2 buuuut... eh. I love XIV's artstyle and universe, but I don't play MMOs.

And XV is, in my eyes, not a FF. No turn-based combat, no fantasy setting, you're stuck with that goth K-pop group full of clichés... In a game called Final Fantasy, I don't want to be in a realistic world, driving a car with some bros. I prefer worlds like FF IX had.

Heh, Bravely Default and Bravely Second are more Final Fantasy-esque than recent Final Fantasy games, that's ridiculous.

Also, why are people shouting "FAKE GAMERZ" stuff on here ? It's OK to have a different opinion, no need to shout "FAKE <whatever>" like Trump does when people contradict him. Geez, have some perspective ;)

I would move on from turn based combat once and forever. It's not coming back. And it's no better than we have now. Just. Move on. Turns have evolved.

Anyways, 'turns' is not what defined FF, is greatness as a whole:
Technology, story, characters, and gameplay.

Turn-based combat was just that way because of the available tech, There's no point in getting stuck with it right now.

You can rest assured that if we ever get another FF with great story, characters and pace, turns wouldnt be missed in the slightest.

ITT: what if Donald Trump was a huge Final Fantasy XV fan

(I personally found FFXV to be a flawed but worthy attempt at recapturing some of the magic that made the old FF games so special)

Please tell me you are joking with that. I mean you do know we still got ARPG back then like Tales and Star Ocean series? If you are not in Turn based that fine but don't give me BS about Turn based combat being "outdated".

Honestly turn based games like the older FF games just shows laziness to not adapt the game to a newer real time system.

I feel like there's very few games that can properly pull off turn based gaming without making it an absolute chore.

I think FFXIII-2 combat system was the way to go and keep evolved.

It was very, VERY fast paced.
Lots and lots of spells, status effects, buff, debuffs, options etc.
Player had to react quickly and shift between job formations according to the enemies and the battle...for me it was very fun constantly switching from full buff+debuff party to full stun to full attack to healing+tanking. For most people those games were "mash autoattack to win", then they would cry they were stuck in 15 minutes battles that you could end in 1 minute if you buffed+debuffed and attacked properly based on weaknessess.
It ALMOST had a Job system. For a FFXVI entry I would change the "paradign" stuff for classic FF jobs like Dragoon, Black mage, White Mage, etc.
FFXIII-2 added QTE mid battle and the possibility of change the leader in mid battle, if it also had the Summonning system of XIII it would have been almost perfect (the system, not the summons....although I'm a fan of Motorbike-Shivas).

I'm not saying the next entry has to have the XIII system but let's evolve/improve from that. Eliminate auto-battle (only put there for casual players, an option I eliminiated the first minute on both games). I would add free movement for the controlled character so attacks are more effective (in a ChronoTrigger way, some attacks were position based).

There's a lot of room for improvement, "hold X to awesome and win" was not the way.

Please tell me you are joking with that. I mean you do know we still got ARPG back then like Tales and Star Ocean series? If you are not in Turn based that fine but don't give me BS about Turn based combat being "outdated".
... and?
That is far from meaning that it isnt outdated.
It just means devs / producers doesnt want it to evolve.

But tlets just clarify things:
One thing is fun. Yes, turns can still be fun. Why not?
But another thing is outdated. Nowadays, current tech allows for more complete and deep combat systems, that are also fun and enjoyable, in ways turns cannot be.

It's fine if you like one more than the other, but you should be conscious that that is your particular taste, and not objective in any form.

Outdated is subjective. Your entire post is your personal opinion, and then you have the balls to call out the other guy? Please. You should be conscious that you're being full of shit.

Sit down, and if your limited attention span allows for it: play some goddamn Xcom.

So, considering 'outdated' a system that comes from more than 20 years ago, and have already evolved in many games, is just an 'opinion'?

Tell me more, please.

Well turnbased combat is fun, what make its fun is the strategy u can make in combat. But i'll take realtime/action combat anyday. Because with this i can fully control my character, not just choose what to do. And real time combat can have strategy too, see Ninja gaiden, Total War or Soul Borne or Tale for more info.

Pepole think ff 15 is bad coz of the real time combat is clueless. Its bad coz of the way SE release, the lack of story, lack exploration....the combat was ok, not good but not bad either

Sure, since learning the difference between an opinion and a fact is a critical life skill that you're struggling with.

You know what also existed 20 years ago? Real time combat! I guess that's outdated too, hu? Better go moan at the the Souls players about how Shadows Die Twice is using an outdated combat system.

You know what exists today? Turn based combat! Amazing games like XCom 2 and D: OS (pretty sure you'll have to Google those, since you're probably a Fortnite player or something).

Attempting to sell one style of combat as superior to all else is pretty silly. I mean stupid, but I'm trying to be nice here.

You prefer real time combat, and that's perfectly fine (and most people will agree with you). You're not trying to sell your preference as some indisputable fact, which I appreciate.

Look, I didnt play that fucking XCom.
This is a thread about Final Fantasy. And its outdated combat system from PS1 era is outdated, it has evolved and you should deal with it.

And i'm not extrapolating that to any other game, as you assumed.

And keep making wrong assumptions about me, I had some laughs.

@ Whitecrow Whitecrow : look, if you are not in to turn based combat then that's your taste and I have zero issue with that but calling it "outdated" is complete BS. Turn based is just different type of combat system. FPS games also exsited for long time but that doesn't make "outdated".

You are missing my point.

Combat in FF evolved.
Devs can now realise their visions for the because now the technology is there for that.

That didnt happen in PS1 era, where gameplay was a lot more restricted by the technology available at that time.

SO, turn based combat in FF games can be considered outdated as long as the tech stopped it from evolving.
And this is not an opinion, is a pure logic reasoning, that you should have no problem understanding. That is, if you dont mix tastes in the discussion.

And then comes World of Final Fantasy, released in the same year as FF15, and blows your reasoning away.

Turn-based combat isn't outdated in, or outside, the FF franchise. You simply feel it is since you prefer real time combat (your preference, or "taste" as you put it), and your reasoning comes across as weak: "can be considered" is a limp sauce way of saying "when you squint at this in juuuuust the right way I suddenly have a point".

Turns have evolved.

Yes, they have evolved but not to be "action based", there are new ways to make turn based combats fast, interesting and fun. Octopath and Bravely Default are good examples of evolved turn battles, FFXIII is another good example.

Turns are NOT outdated, the way they were implemented in SNES and PS1 is the thing that's outdated. It's a battle system as legit as any other and it has it's own evolutions that don't involve changing into action.

Just to make it clear: The evolution of Turns is not becoming action, it's a new way of fighting with turns. Swaping from Turns to action is NOT evolving, it's changing it for another thing.

That didnt happen in PS1 era, where gameplay was a lot more restricted by the technology available at that time.

There were Action JRPG on PS1 and SNES era, what's your point?

I wouldn't necessarily say it evolved. I think S-E wanted to take it in a different direction all together. Which is fine, given how much success they saw in a title that was released right around the same time as they were looking to go in a different direction. A little title you might've heard called Kingdom Hearts.

At the end of the day, S-E is a business and at this point, they might capitalize on the nostalgia train that a lot of companies are cashing in on these days.

I wouldn't be surprised if they "tested the waters" with another stab at turn-based combat to bring back that nostalgic FF experience.

I understand the appeal of ARPG as they offer a more immersive experience and it keeps you on your toes, but turn-based has a strategic element to it that many enjoy as well.

There is still a market for turn-based games. Look no further than Dragon Quest, Bravely series, and Octopath.

Outdated basically means old-fashioned, something you're parents or the older generation would play. Fading in popularity or uncool. The easiest way to quantify that is the sales numbers. Do sales numbers mean something is bad? No, but it means that it doesn't sell well enough to resonate with the majority of the modern gaming audience. Corporations like SE need to sell to the largest available market to stay in business. The largest Japanese games are dwarfed by Western style games in sales which means they aren't popular anymore. Action, open world sandbox gaming is what sells today. No one talks about FF anymore, almost being like the moped you don't want your friends seeing you ride. Most of the Japanese games are cutesy, colorful and have questionable bat sh-t crazy stories. Makes western adults cringe.
Or go to the other extreme of punishing you with unforgivable mechanics. Sometimes both! People say that they tried to copy western games and failed, which may be true. But people don't realize the Japanese's rise to power was taking foreign concepts, ideas and taking them apart and improving on them and adding a Japanese twist to it. That's true in every industry they came to dominate. Turn based games should stay in the handheld or phone world. It's old, and frankly its like someone arguing that they still use typewriters cause it's better than computers?

I highly disagree with everything you said. Say what you want but without Japanese games, gaming would have been so god damn boring. I take "colorful and have questionable bat sh-t crazy stories" over 80% of western game stories.

I don't mind them in handheld form and really prefer them in the portable market, but not as a AAA console game. Heck I even think a smaller compact rpg, with 100 percent voice acting and more FMV with a sub 40 dollar price turned out every couple of years could be very popular. More than a 3ds game but less than a AAA PS4 game. I grew up with Japanese games so I don't want them to disappear, but I'm anxious to see new concepts and ideas coming out of Japan not gaming concepts I saw 20 years ago.

Well I'm currently enjoying Japanese games both in console and in handheld and I absolutly hype for KHIII which can be considered AAA game.

From a person who played FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2, FFXII, FFXIII, and FFVIX...... FFXV is a joke really. It is a half baked game. The gameplay, story, even the positioning of assets in the world of the game was weird and unprofessional. First time I saw the game I was like "no way this game is a Finished FF product".

I am not sure if they need to return to turn based or not but in the next game, please finish it before the release. Polish it. I enjoyed the battle system in KH games. Also turn based games work brilliantly in 2018 and are not outdated, take for example Octopath and Bravely Default games that used turn based battle system.

Just my personal opinion.

SE has been doing their best to distance themselves from the gameplay of the old FFs. 12 and 15 suffer for it especially, though 11 and 14 were great.. I still don't see why they feel the need to do that with the single player titles since every FF has been successful, even with (apparently outdated) turned-based combat. Final Fantasy these days can be pretty much anything as SE seems to be good with throwing whatever type of gameplay at it they see fit. Maybe SE will get a clue and FF16 will return to the series roots and deliver a solid turn-based combat system and a amazing story.......? Nah, I fully expect FF16 to be a military shooter with battle royale elements.

As others have said, FF lost the crown long ago. Xenoblade has taken the title of best epic RPG these days. 3 games so far, and they are all phenomenal.

What is the direction they seem to change directions and identity of the ip with each major next installment. the only progressive steps ive seen is taking turn based and taking control away with ff13 doubling down with 13-2, lighting returns started doing some more steps toward a more actiony system. and ffxv was hack and slash action but I feel like it didnt have that much depth in the case of comparing to a game like ninja gaiden or dmc.

whats next a first person perspective final fantasy ?. they really liked the idea when they did some testing in vr, and then did first person mode in the updated version of xv.
