Are you still buying DVD's?

My personal policy is if the film/show/whatever was made before a certain year, I get the DVD. If after, I get the bluray. Since I like a lot of older stuff, I mostly tend to stick to DVDs. I'm one of those plebians that can't really see a big visual difference between DVD or BR on my television, so...

Aside from the DVD's packaged in Disney combo packs, I reserve buying Blu-rays for movies I deem worthy on Blu-ray. Stream first (not available?) -> DVD/Blu-ray from Netflix, Redbox or other (Not availabile?) -> Purchase Blu-ray (Not available on Blu-ray?) -> Purchase DVD

No. Physical media is dead to me*. It takes up unnecessary physical space and becomes outdated when a new standard is released. I don't want to have to have a DVD or blu-ray player to play outdated standards in the future.

*Books are an exception because I enjoy looking at them and they never become outdated.

Still buy more DVD than Blu Ray discs

- Usually cheaper even when just released, and dirt cheap once a few months old.
- Picture quality is good enough.
- Playable on computer, blu ray playback is hell even with paid software, I usually read them on console.

Not interested in digital, unless movie is drm free, but that's extremely rare.

I've been buying blurays instead of DVDs since 2008. I like to have a collection and don't like to depend on the Internet to watch a movie.

I stopped buying DVDs in anticipation of BD/HD-DVD in late-2005.
I've noticed that some people actively hate Blu-ray, though, all women so far. Like I'll be in a store and I'll hear a guy say that the Blu-ray/DVD is cheaper than the DVD (which is pretty common) and his wife/gf/whatever will say something like "Fuck Blu-ray." and make him buy the DVD.
I'm not surprised. Blu-ray is a hazzle compared to DVD. I no longer bother playing them back, instead I throw them in the PC and rip them. It's sad, but it's less irritating than messing around with the PS3 until the movie finally plays.

Doesn't help that "real" Blu-ray players got godawful remotes with a billion buttons and ass slow UIs.

Never was.

I think I've only bought 2 or 3 DVDs in my whole life and they were for shit movies that were hard to get at the time, like Troll 2 or the Room where it was easier to buy them than to stream them.

Physical media has been dead in this house for years. I don't need a load of plastic cluttering up the place, sold most of my films a few years ago when prices were still reasonable.

I'd imagine most of the remaining market are less technical people who don't care about the quality and just want what they're used to. Like my dad who raged that his TV was broken when it was set to HD instead of ugly, stretched 4:3 SD.

How is it more of a hassle? Blu-Ray and DVD are both an equal mess of unskippable stupid menus and ads, in my experience

Only DVDs I have bought are classic dr who. I mostly buy them for the extras like making of and commentary. Plus I don't figure any places stream old shows like that

nah i stream only, and usually just rent unless I really dig the film, or the kids are going to watch it 10000000 times, then I'll buy (digital). physical media just aint my bag no more.

I hate how DVDs are still selling over blurays, but it's how it is. Walmart is like 90% dvd.

I buy blurays, but it's an enthusiast market now. I buy nice day one steelbooks or $30 back catalog films from niche labels.

I streamed game of thrones when I caught up with it and the quality is shit compared to a bluray visual and audio. People that stream just don't give a shit.

I buy loads of blurays but I will probably never buy a DVD. There's just no point spending the money on something that looks and sounds so much worse.

DVDs for my daughter, recently bought the ducktales, darkwing duck, rescue rangers, and talespin collections. She loves them, and I still enjoy them. The last bluray I bought was the movie 2012....for 40$. Never again.

I never really bought them that much in the first place but if there is something I really want then I'd still buy them. DVD quality is good enough for me. If it's cheaper then the Blu-ray then I take the cheap option.

Only when things absolutely aren't available on Blu-ray. And even then I wait a few months.

In Australia, there currently seems to be a bad trend of certain movies and TV shows releasing on DVD first and then the Blu-ray coming out soon after.

i don't see much difference with blu ray. maybe its time to upgrade my TV but i doubt it, it's only 3 years old

that said no i don't buy DVDs anymore. but i wouldn't mind "resorting" to it

I dont think I have anything capable of even playing DVDs... My desktop PC has no optical drive. My ultrabook has no optical drive. I sold my Wii U and PS4 recently (anticipating Neo purchase in the future). My HDTVs are all hooked up to a FireTV.

I only buy DVD now if is the only option. I've been upgrading my DVD collection to HD using VUDU's Disc-to-Digital thing.

I'm buying Blu-rays for some movies, and digital only for others. Mostly buy the blu-ray only when it also includes a digital copy, or if it is 3D.

I would like to get a 4K projector once they become affordable (3-5 years), BluRay will still look good at 120", whereas DVD already looks like shit at 60". There's no point in buying DVDs for me.

It's not like I'm buying every new release and spending thousands of dollars more a year for the BluRay versions. I buy maybe 5-10 BluRays a year, mostly catalog titles. Saving $5 or less by buying the DVD means nothing. I wouldn't even buy the DVD if they were $20 cheaper, I'd just buy less BluRays.

When I bought a Chromecast and an Android Phone, I stopped buying physical media completely. That was over 2 years ago now.

Only for old kung fu flicks or stuff that won't ever ever ever get a blu ray release. With all the sales, ebay, and amz marketplace there's no reason to buy DVD for new movies.

I only buy a DVD if I can't get it on Blu Ray or Downloaded/streamed.

How I Met Your Mother is on dvd as a complete set but not Blu-ray. This bugs me.

Haven't bought a DVD in maybe 10-15 years. Pretty sure the last one was Heat.

Haven't bought any blurays in a long time as well. Just stream or whatever is on the telly.

If it's not on Netflix or iTunes Rentals, it doesn't exist. Unlike a good video game, movies have zero replay value to me - so there's no point in me buying them. Waste of space.

I mean, I'm sure you can still rent DVDs and Blu-Ray discs somewhere around here - but I'd honestly rather just do something other than watch a movie if that was my only option.

The year doesnt matter. I've got a bunch of silent movies from the 20s to now where the blurays are the best available versions with remasters or just better encoding of the same transfer. The xfiles remastered seasons are way better than the DVDs and are often like $10, way cheaper than the DVDs days too.

Dvd is just lower quality for not that much difference in price. New bluray releases for most things are like $20-25 and come with a dvd copy and digital code.
