Are you suppose to tip in Montreal, Canada

So glad we don't have to put up with any of that BS here in Sweden. Sure, if a bartender has been giving you excellent service you might tip him/her a little something just to show your appreciation, but that's completely up to you. And that's how it should be. A tip should be a small bonus voluntarily given to someone doing a great job, not something demanded of you by people who get pissed off if they think you're not giving them enough.

Doesn't alcohol cost an arm and a leg in Sweden?

Comparatively, yeah, I guess...? A regular beer (40 cl) is normally about $6-7, but it can be both cheaper and more expensive than that depending on where you go, of course. Where I usually go (laid-back pubs rather than fancy clubs) I pay about $5 for one.

The waitressn is often paid less then the "regular" minimum wage, so yeah, you have to tip.

At 1$ a tip at least, they make that minimum wage pretty fucking quick.

Anyway I tip tax (15%) in Montreal.

And that right there is the problem. I, the customer, shouldn't have to make up for employees not being payed sufficiently by their employers. I am not the bartender's/waitress' employer, the pub/club is. How is paying your employees less than minimum wage even legal? Tipping culture is stupid, that is all. Glad to not have to deal with it.

I have bartender for years when I was younger in Philadelphia. $1 tip per drink is fine! The last placed I worked in 1998, where we had $7 beers, I got a $1 a drink. It was only on large tabs, where the patrons wer drunk, that I go huge tips. Most week nights, I would make about $75-$125 from the bar an then another $50-$100 from the waitstaff tables (waiters had to give som cash for their tables that I helped with). Weekends was about $300-400 a night if I worked 4pm until 2am and did the cleanup. Would make a lot of it though fom late nights when waiters from other restraunts would come in after the bar closed and we would still serve them as we cleaned.

I mad $2.35/hr and would only declare half my hours to avoid taxes. After taxes, my pay check per week was nothing.

In your country, what does it coast for two adults at a nice restaraunt for dinner including drinks? Here in Charlestown, my wife and I can have an appetizer split, our entrees, a drink or two each and splint a dessert for less than a hundred with tip in a very nice place.

In Quebec, the ministry of revenue makes it mandatory for all servers to declare 8% of their sales as tips. That way the ministry is guaranteed some revenue from tips.

If you tip under 8% the server is still on the hook for paying income tax on 8% of the sale.

I've only ever seen servers ask for more when the tip does not meet that threshold. I have never seen a server balk at a 1 dollar tip for a 4 dollar order. I have a hard time believing that. Maybe the table/party was tipping pretty light as a whole?

I am guessing you still pay for it, in the end. If the custom is to pay higher wagers to servers in your country, then I am guessing that you pay for it through higher prices.

I don't mind tipping but I hate tipping bartenders at clubs... really really hate it. I do it (usually a dollar on top of my drink order) but it's bullshit. Paying for an overpriced drink and then having to tip on top of that...sigh.

I remember last weekend a bartender decided it was best if she just took a 3 dollar tip from me. Not really a fan of that...

On the rare occasion that I go to "clubs" and have to order drinks from the bar I will tip heavily on the first order. On subsequent trips, the bartender almost always recognizes me and lets me cut in line.

Hahaha. Tipping is pretty much mandatory in Montreal. Not only that, but waitresses/hosts/bartenders/whatever have absolutely no qualms whatsoever about telling you that your tip is insufficient, and will stand there and harass you until you pony up more cash.

If anyone ever did that to me I would forcibly take back whatever tip I gave them in the first place. Fuck that.

Yes, I probably do. And I'd rather have that than bartenders harassing me over tips. It's just a more dignified situation for everyone involved.

That's nothing. When I used to go to St. Sulpice there was this one waitress who would hold back change and then ask for a tip knowing that some customers were going to be too drunk to count.

Fucking bitch got caught once and actually had the nerve to call one of the bouncers on me. Bouncer turned out to be a buddy of mine who I do martial arts with though and had enough sway to get me free drinks for the rest of the night. He also let me smoke weed on the patio.

This has happened to me. Drinks were $9 at this place, you would've thought the $1 tip was enough. At least enough to not get yelled at.

Montreal has some of the nastiest customer service ever, and despite this, expect bigger tips then anywhere I've ever been. Once tipped a dollar on a 4 dollar beer and she held back my beer and said "tip's not included". Yikes.

Also one time I bought a pair of Habs underwear (YEP) from a souvenir shop. The guy bagged it, gave me my receipt and said "thank you, bye". I picked up and looked at a lighter and he pushed the bag towards me again and said "bye". Rough.
