that depends on which madhhab you follow, my mother is a hanafi, and hanafis have pretty strict guidelines when it comes to seafood.

I'm Sunni Hanafi too... My parents and I eat all seafood. We are from Pakistan.

Personally, I want to eat clams.. I find them queezing... Nothing against them. Shrimps are cool in my book.

My coworkers will only prepare meat at home if it's halal... but they'll eat McDonalds. It's so weird.

I go balls deep when it comes to seafood, but my mother only eats fish with scales; she told me its the hanafi ruling on seafood. Doesnt matter, all it means is
more lobster pussy for me

Just tell her you have a hook up. A dude who will sell you halal stuff for cheap. Then just buy the regular shit and give that to her. I am assuming physically there is no difference, right?

I might be a terrible person.

What, and possibly destroy his mother's trust in him. Horrify his mother. Your mother, by order of importance, is the most important person n your life after Allah, than the Prophet and the 14 Masoomeen, and the Ahlul-Bayt.

"It was narrated by Abu Hurairah (R) that a man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and asked him, "Who amongst his near one had the greatest right over him?" The Prophet replied, "Your mother". The man then asked, "Who after that?" to which the Prophet replied again, "Your mother". Asked who is next, the Prophet again replied, "Your mother". When the man asked who after that, the Prophet said, "Your father"."

I am still baffled and shocked at the fact that your mom spends 500 dollars a month on meat. how many people are in your house anyway? thats 70 pounds at least per month.

you said Halal Lamb is about 7 to 9 dollars a pound. then that means your mom is buying 70 pounds of meat roughly a month. am I reading that right?

Yes, she buys somewhere around that amount each month. Though I suppose I should also point out that my idiot brother stops by pretty often too.

I'm atheist but my family is muslim, I've already made it clear to them I don't give a shit about halal/haram, I'll eat anything including pork.

Whenever I read stuff like this i think back to the day when i was 5 years old and my mom and dad asked us kids if we wanted to go to church or go get waffles for breakfast and we were all like "Fuck that boring place - imma get so much maple syrup my eyes water"

I would have laughed in my family's face if they tried to keep me from a steak or frosted mini wheats and milk or mufucking bacon... mmmmmmm... God i'm hungry.

Dude I feel you on this. My mom will only get halal meat and needs a good amount of money for it too.

My parents let my siblings and I eat haram until we were like 13-15 and then just said alright stop now, we're not doing that anymore, I'm like wdf? Why even bother since you've been letting us eat haram all this time? I stopped for a while then said fuck it and went back it what I was doing since I was a kid. It's all the same to me. I'm not really religious like most Muslims so I guess that's why I'm not worried about it. I don't eat pork tho, that's something that I'm gonna stick by since that was completely not an option from the start. My mom thinks I don't eat haram but little does she know... My dad knows I do and he eats it with me! Lmfao.

My dads been pretty chill about letting a "Muslim" like me do "haram" things. He lets me make my own choices which most Muslims dads don't do. Thank god for him. He's a lot more Americanized unlike most Muslim dads.

Insulin doesn't come from a pig's liver, dude. :) A fair amount used to come from pigs, but bovine insulin was sourced as well. so you don't even KNOW. maybe gumpy was shooting cow insulin all that time, eh?

Also it's been commercially available synthetically sourced since the late 70's, so THERE.

Was going to post those. That's ancient news. Its almost all synthetic now. Fuck yeah science.

Yeah, if you want your kids to eat halal, do namaz, etc., you don't wait till they'e at the age of booloogh (they're baliqh) to do it.

Why do you have to eat 20-30kg of meat per month?:O

Those halal hot dogs and patties in that turkish store taste like shit anyway.

Weird thing is, we did go to the masjid a good amount and they sent us to Islamic school for a couple years but still allowed this, so once they said stop I was like uhhhhh kinda late on that don't you think?

I hate to tell you, but from my experience of working in food manufacturing, it is unlikely your food actually meets the religious standards you want it to. I know for a fact a lot of kosher food is not prepared kosher I cant imagine it is any different in regards to halil, whatever that is.

Unless your masjid personally sens people to check and they have a list of places you can go. This is the best part about visiting Hyderabad in India. The meat industry is controlled by Muslims over there.

I wish I lived in Dearbourne, Michigan. My family used to live there before I was born, and Dearbourne has A BUNCH of Muslims.

Shit can get expensive!

Por exemplo: being a part of a muslin family, as you might already know, if we want to eat meat, we have to do so in Allah-approved fashion. Around L.A., I've seen beef and lamb go for no less than $7/lb. with it going some times as high as $9/lb! My mom (who buys most of the groceries) recently told me she's been spending anywhere between $400 - $500/month just on meat! The following conversation then ensued:

Me: What the hell is wrong with you?!
Mom: What? You want your *random Indian dish* don't you?
Me: Not if it costs that much.
Mom: Well, there's nothing we can do about it.
Me: How about...
Mom: Yes?
Me: How about just buying regular non-halal meat?
Mom: WHAT??
Me: I'm just saying...
Mom: You know damn well we can't do that! It's illegal in our religion!
Me: Well sure, most of the time, but you know Allah grants exceptions occasionally.
Mom: What? How so?
Me: Well, grandpa used to take insulin shots, right?
Mom: Yes?
Me: Well, guess what? That insulin comes from a pig's liver. A PIG. You know? The animal that we're not supposed to ingest in any way even if it's halal, which it can't be? You don't think grandpa's gonna go to hell now, are you?
Mom: *ponders for a second*
Me: Wael?
Mom: Uh...well, that may be true, but the situations are completely different. People with diabetes don't have a choice. That's an extenuating circumstance.
Me: So is this!
Mom: Meat's expensive but we can afford it.
Me: Well, yeah...technically, but come on. We could save that money and use it for more noble things.
Mom: Like what?
Me: We can figure it out later.
Mom: Sorry, rules are rules.
Me: Seriously, I'm sure there's some heavy burden exemption of some kind in the Qur'an. Probably in the back somewhere. I'm sure Allah would understand.
Mom: He won't.
Me: UGH.

Long story short, I may have to go on an all fish diet at home from now on. :/

(and all you other Islamists in here, don't bother telling me that my insulin comparison was way off base. I know it was. It's called being intentionally misleading.

You sound kind of dickish.

I love my mom but I sure as hell don't like her.

*Really dickish

Heh, I think we're very moderate muslims (well, my parents) and even though I've clashed with my parents when it comes to believing in Allah, we never had this halal discussion. We don't eat pork but otherwise everything is fair game.

Heh, that's actually pretty interesting cause my cousins and their family were raised eating haram foods as well, but they all started eating halal when they got older. Which is really weird, cause that happened even with their parents. It's not like they were kids at the time they were enjoying haram foods either.

You sound kind of dickish.

I'm the opposite of dickish, actually. I'm the one supporting my mom. If anything, I deserve a medal.

No they just think I've strayed very far from religion and I still believe in god deep down in my heart. haha.

Ha, nice. You and I are both gonna have some fun conversations with our families at some point. ;)

thats a good one. i lent him my wii a year ago to play skyward sword. and he still hasnt finished it

First of all, it was TWO years ago, SIR.

Second of all, FYI, I plan on finishing SS.

....some day.

I'm not a religious man myself and wouldn't let any mystical belief dictate my diet, but I think your mother is right : if you decide to stand by such rules, then you shouldn't let comfort or monetary issue get in the way of your belief.
It's a good thing that muslim religion is tolerant enough to let people in dire conditions make exceptions, but it shouldn't be a way to say "I'm not feeling like following the rules today, so fuck them". At one point you have to decide, either eat halal, or don't.

If you want halal, buying by the pound is not the way to do it.
My brother lives in New Mexico and constantly brags about how sheep meat is.

He buys a lamb for 60 bucks and slaughters it himself. I'm sure you'll find someone to do it for a nominal price if you prefer not to.

The extent that humans will go to make themselves feel better about their lives is ridiculous. Only eating meat if someone chants over the animal before slashing it's throat with a knife? lol

Okay.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there various translations/interpretations of the fighs within the Shura/sharia of the Quran?

Your family seems like pretty traditionalistic outta the categories of Muslims I've read about...

I'm not Muslim, but I have considered buying halal meat here because it appears cheaper in some shops, than regular meat in grocery shops.

Yeah. I've noticed that too. Supermarkets are expensive for meat. lol

If that's her religious belief then that's fine, people are entitled to their beliefs.

To be honest with the meat thing..just....eat less of it. There's plenty of ways to stretch out dishes using potato, mushrooms, etc. that give you the same dish just....with less meat. We started doing this a few years ago when we switched from Supermarket meat to meat from the local butcher...we get less of it but what we get actually looks like meat, and he does things like boned and rolled Turkey at Christmas (and believe me that stuff is to die for after supermarket mass reared Turkey).

The cost increase was similar to going Halall (although obviously not the same thing as it's a pork butcher's) but we just learned ways of doing dishes that just....used less.

OP, get a job, then go and buy a very long salame and weave it in front of your mom like as it were a dick. Guaranteed results 100%

I see all these fried chicken joints in the UK with Halal signs all over them.

I don't believe for one second that all of the 'meat' they use has been slaughtered by a Muslim individually with a knife whilst announcing "Bismillah" and "Allahu Akbar" 3 times, whilst facing Mecca. Not if you can get a chicken burger for under a quid.

I remember some German (?) org check hundreds of Kebab shops and found that not a single one of them were actually halal.

But then again, Kebab is the choice food of European drunks, so there.

Most of my muslim friends don't give a shit about this or any other things like it.

Don't know how old the op is but if he's over 18 do whatever you want man.

That's good meat son! Get in the gym, eat up all that protein and thank her later when you're HUUUGGGEEE!!
