Arguments over opinions: Does it ever really go anywhere?

They're pointless
Yeah. I tend to post my opinions on something and leave a thread. I don't see the point in responding to people saying my opinion is wrong or whatever.
That's why I'm usually so blasé in regards to politics/religion/bigotry on the internet. Getting heated and typing up a storm won't accomplish anything beyond wasting my time.
Actually, yes it does accomplish a lot of stuff.

You are free to be blasé or whatever that means, but I am thankful for those who fight against bigotry and prejudice on the internet (and outside of it, too).

The problem is when opinions are supported by blobby, dead words like "awesome" and "terrible," with no substance behind them.

Many people express their opinions using words that describe how they feel, and not why they feel that way. Which is totally meaningless to everyone else outside the individual.

There really is a wide range:

Some things are just legit opinions, sometimes it really does boil down to preference. Food is one realm that is almost purely opinion based. There is some objectivity, but to some people no matter how well something is prepared they still may not like it.

Movies, TV and Music are similar but have more objective methods of defining quality. They also have other methods of analyzing them for structure, characters and story.
But there is still a flavor of opinion built in, the best movie objectively ever made will never appeal to everybody.

Politics veers further into the objective realm. I like to try to base opinions on previous history, studies, models, human behavior and rationality whenever possible. I think this is also why political arguments and discussions can get so heated.

Yes and no. My opinion usually isn't changed, but sometimes it comes to me understanding their opinion.

Art should be appreciated, and part of appreciating is discourse.

You can answer this question succinctly.

Is it an opinion based on ignorance or bias. If it is truly based on ignorance, then sure you're good to go. If it is based on bias/etc. then let it go.
