Aria the Animation Dub/Blu-Ray Funded on Kickstarter

Totally confused the title for this:

Thisss.

Oh wow the weekend seems to have been huge for the kickstarter and now there's just under $9500 to go to have the complete second season dubbed!

It's not going to take much to crawl to the second half of the second season now. And once that happens, there should be a another big spike as people upgrade to getting all of season 1 and season 2. With any luck, that along with the usual end-of-campaign rush will be enough to make season 3+OVAs happen so that we won't need another Kickstarter down the line.

Seriously, color me shocked.

As someone who ran a bit of an Aria "kickstarter" project here on GAF with PosterGAF, I'm genuinely surprised too.

What's crazy is that this is just coming from 1600 people, which is basically the low end of a Japanese anime release on the charts. There's quite a number of people who are just paying to support the Kickstarter in some of the lower tiers as well.

If they don't hit Origination's goal, I hope they just commit to it anyway since there's clearly some demand. There will probably be people who don't back the Kickstarter who would buy it down the line.

I see from the Kickstarter comments that they're constructing the chipboard box to hold all the seasons of the show, which is another good sign. Seasons 1 and 2 are pretty much a sure thing at this point. But even if season 3 needs another Kickstarter, I don't think there's any risk that only part of the show will be dubbed given the response thus far.

Annnnnd Part 2 of Season 2 is funded!

Also, not only is there a super informative *Reddit AMA, but Veronica Taylor is a confirmed cast member.

*I had no idea the Japanese blu-rays had issues; glad they're taking that into account.

Yeah it was one of the reasons why I didn't spend the thousand dollars to import it.

The new tiers are up also.

Oh wow, had no idea there was Marimite BD. I'd probably back that too if they ever branch out to their other stuff.

Also I guess Tamayura won't be licensed at all. :(

Such a fantastic show.
However it only became fantastic for me thanks to the final season and how it brought everything together. Up until then I found it highly enjoyable without being amazing.

This is me too. Animation was decent. Natural was good to great depending on ep. Origination is damn masterpiece.

Exactly, the entire series is just a buildup to Origination. I don't even have words to describe Origination. It basically single-handedly pulled me out of a pretty bad depression. I think it's a masterpiece in it's own right, but at the time I was watching there were some really potent and relevant life lessons to be had. I honestly feel like a better person having watched it.

And of course, the OST is a 10/10 which helps a lot. The opening and ending songs have been in my playlist forever now. Round Table and Nino are so damn good.

I generally prefer The Natural on rewatches, but that's because I love the world of Neo Venezia.

I still find it strange that Amano had (at least at the point when the DVDs first came out) never been to Venice, so it's amazing to me how much she seemed to be able to take from books/photos/etc to recreate Venice.

I also have a similar experience with Aria as a whole though, in terms of it serving its function as "healing anime", and it's why I consider it one of my top anime series.

So campaign updated with a final 360k stretch goal to get Origination, the OVAs, and Avvenire.

(The Avvenire special features are Kickstarter exclusive)

But, no new tiers will be opened so... here's hoping new people get interested.

Hard to believe how far this little campaign has come. If it hits that $360K mark I'm pretty sure it'll be the most successful anime Kickstarter of all time. And it's already over 80% there with plenty of time left!

Aria fans are crazy. lol

It makes me wonder if any company could raise a similar amount of money from a similarly dedicated but small anime fanbase.

$450 (Siren Plus Plus) pledge in. Probably dumping in even more money if that's what it takes to get Origination too.

I already have the US DVDs.

And the JP Blu-Rays.

And the JP DVDs.

I might be a bit nuts.

Oh you imported the JP blurays? Wow, that's dedication. lol

Probably the silliest thing I've done for Aria was play the game before it was pulled completely.

Just saw this was thing while browsing my twitter feed. Coming into this late-ish there are so many tiers it has become really overwhelming trying to decide how much I want to back. Any idea how they'll handle S3 + Avvenire when they reach their stretch goal?

It sounds like for now they're leaving the Plus/Double Plus tiers as is and making Origination/Arietta/Avvenire an add-on you kick extra money into separate of a pledge tier. That could change though.

Besides that, it's not terribly complicated - nearly every tier has a Plus (includes first half of Natural) and Double Plus (includes both halves of Natural) version. It's a lot to sort through, but there really aren't that many base tiers.

Add-on option afterwards:

Note, we will not make new tiers for this, unless we reach the goal quickly. Thus, what we will do is add the final set as an add-on option, which we will make accessible to all backers and slacker backers.

Well that makes it easy. Just need to decide how much I want to invest in this now.

If I understand well, the final set includes the final season + Arietta + Avvenire , and Avvenire would be just available in this set, right? I could buy the series and Arietta next year, but I wish secure Avvenire somehow :/

No. The only Kickstarter exclusive is the Japanese Avvenire commentary if they reach 365k.

Edit: For the on disc stuff that is. There's other stuff like those badges, covers, boxes and whatnot.

The Avvenire features are much like the features that are on the other discs - some interviews/discussions, but there's also a visual commentary where you can see them watch the OVAs.

(I still remember them getting a bit choked up when talking about Athena's character for obvious reasons).

Making it exclusive to Kickstarter makes me wonder about the cost of doing two separate printings though.

The Kickstarter update for Avvenire is essentially a license announcement for it. I think even if we don't get the stretch goal, we can be assured they will release it in some form later on.

I think they'd be crazy to not dub it all regardless of whether they got that last stretch goal or not.

If the idea is that they don't want to lose money, I wonder if they wouldn't wait for another Kickstarter or hope that post-Kickstarter backers and add-ons hit the goal.

I still think it's a mistake not to include the new tiers, considering that the only reason the number keeps going up right now is because of backers upping pledges and not because of new backers. Looking at Kicktraq, it seems to have plateaued at an average of 20 new people per day... but even on GAF, there's someone who says they just backed it to make the initial goal and that they're ready to pull their funding because they're not interested in the show, so that number's going to fluctuate anyway.

Why would they include Origination et al in new tiers now if the stretch goal for them hasn't even been met yet?

If Origination was a 320/340 tier and Avvenire was 360, the Kickstarter would basically jump start to hit 360 soon after.

I know that people on the Kickstarter page are angsting over subtitle colour, but to turn that into a stretch goal instead of Origination seems "meh". Certainly it's not something that makes me want to go over my initial outlay.

We're already past $300k. Wowza.

Oh, and here's your feel-good message for the week:

When Shawne was thinking about launching this campaign, one of his big concerns was how people would react to dubbing only S1. This campaign is all very much a leap of faith -- both for Nozomi, and for backers wondering if they will be left with a partially dubbed series (argh!!). It AMAZING beyond belief how Aria's fans have rallied to support this project. We can only hope that there are more folks like you who can be persuaded to give crowdfunding a chance!!! Thank you for being willing to take the plunge!!!

Yes, Shawne is doing another Reddit next week -- hopefully that will give the campaign more visibility!

Gotta admit: I'm not crazy about yellow subtitles either and I think they're especially crass-looking in a show like Aria. It's a welcome stretch goal for me.

I personally prefer higher contrast subs, and sometimes white doesn't work well. But this is why I like when fansubbers get silly and use colours like pink just because they can.

Still, you gotta admit, it's not the most riveting of goals to aim for.

This is why I'm half seriously suggesting white with thick outlines the color of President Aria's eyes, lol

Gotta vote for the cat butt.

The campaign is still tracking ahead of what it needs to hit $360k, too. It's chugging along really well!

My God, thank you for posting this. Aria is one of my all-time favorites.

Don't really give a fuck about the dub, but I'm stoked for the Blu-ray remaster.

A large withdrawn pledge really messed with the daily averages for the campaign. But even so, it looks like it's still tracking ahead of what it needs to hit the big $360k mark in the time remaining.

Does that account for all the donors leapfrogging from the base tier to the plus tier to the double plus tier?

Yeah, most of those seem to be done now. If I'm doing my math right, needing $47,091 over the remaining 10 days means an average of $4,709/day. Even after a $5,000 pledge was pulled, it's still managed $10,000+ over the past 2 days so it's on the right track. With a little more ANNCast visibility and the usual end-of-campaign spike, and it just might make it.

At an average pledge of $172/backer, it only needs 28 backers/day to hit its mark. So it's looking okay on that front too, so far.

Around $333,000 now. New pledges have taken a pretty sharp nosedive. Unless this project gets a lot of new attention fast, I'm not sure we'll hit $360,000.

The season 1+2+3 artbook has been announced as "your tier + $60" and now the pledges have shot back up again. Looks like it fell behind the pace for only one day and now it's back on track with a vengeance.

Every time I keep thinking it's slowed down and reached its limit, it keeps surprising me by coming back to life. We really might make it.

I'd upgrade to include the artbook, but I don't think I can afford to spend $80. The blu-rays are what's most important.
