Ark Survival Evolved is out now on PS4

Every trailer for the game has been quite... romanticized.

That is putting it mildly.

Walking around dropping turds every two minutes while punching trees and rocks, then you are freezing, then you are too hot, then you are thirsty, then you are starving and next you get killed by a dinosaur. I am DONE with these types of survival games. Just awful.

OMG I am crying with laughter here. The character creation tool lets you build very ugly things, but this is gold.

Joe is a very special character.

Performance is more than likely never going to get better. They've had almost 2 years on PC and they haven't fixed performance to any noticeable degree. This is on UE4 which is even more embarrassing.

Also still haven't delivered on DX12 which they promised over a year ago as well.

Just bought this for myself and a copy for my friend.

We're gunna be starting up on a pvp server

Psn Abylim
Hope you didn't buy it twice on console when you could have gameshared it with your friend. I say this because you two seem to plan to play the game exclusively together.

My jaw dropped as I watched that trailer... it's a shame if the game is not a stable experience...

I hope it gets lots of support and is cleaned up well, if that is the case.

Game sharing is only allowed in the same household on the same ip if I remember correctly. So this would actually be against the TOS and could result in a ban. Personally wouldn't take that risk.

Im one of those steam reviewers with 150 hours and a nasty thumbs down review.

Ill just summarize quickly why: bad online community, developers making paid content before finishing the game (theres a lot of work to go look at that ui), worse performance than forza horizon on pc that gets worse every update, official servers have wayyy too slow gather/tame rate and some dinos are literally over 30 hours of real life babysitting time to tame which will die in 1ms to an invisable player turret that the sever never loaded into your client or you'll lose it to falling through the map. Mods and admin help are 100℅ necessary in this game, you get stuck in the world a lot.

Honestly, unless you guys make a 20+ person gaf group, just avoid this game. You'll ignore the flaws/suck it up and grind a server for 50 hours peacefully making all the allies you can, log on one day and everything you did will be vanished like you never played at all. Theres no payoff in this game. Just grind. Someone will just infinite respawn outside your base all night untill they cut your power and water, then here comes the brontos and gigas!

I would have given this game a pass a year ago, but seeing their progress and reflecting on my time spent, it was a waste.

If one only intended to play PvE, how fun is the game?

Are there quests? Is the goal simply just to survive?

It sounds good on paper, but I don't enjoy playing online, so is this one of those games where it's playable solo, but more difficult, sort of like The Division might be, or maybe like Watch Dogs 2 where you can do everything alone, but friends can join in?

There's quite literally nothing to do alone but build a house to protect you from players who aren't there, amass dino's to fight players who aren't there, eat berries and shit your pants. This quite seriously is the game and even online those first two points are kind of moot.

Where does it say same household on same IP in the TOS? because my best friends who are twins and in the military have been gamesharing since the PS4 launched and they aren't on the same IP.

This game is great and I can definitely recommend it to PS4 owners. I have been playing on PC for a few months now, established a fairly large base by myself on a PvP server. Politics are always interesting in PvP servers, one tribe that recently moved in close to me is a few more transgressions from me C4ing their entire base and killing them with my T-rexes.

The exploration is fun, especially getting a group and exploring the caves. If the Center map is available on PS4, I recommend that one over the Island (default map).

There are bugs since it is in early access, to be safe when you log out I would put your gear away in a box. I died the other day because someone flew near my base and the way it loaded me and my base in, my body fell through the foundation into the map and died.

If you can play on unofficial servers on consoles, do that, officials are not good.

How long ago did you play it?

According to their website they are planning constant updates between now and spring to fix various issues such as, they quote, UI interface.

There was also a 1gb patch to download with the PS4 game today

The moral of this story is don't play on official servers. The gather rates are slow as all hell and the alpha tribes on the server make everything hell for the little guys. Also Gigas are there and OP as all hell. The server and I play on doesn't even have Gigas.

Don't take any weight from their 'patches'. They've been putting them out almost daily for a year and a half now and they've never once made a difference. Performance has never been boosted once and the 'TrueSky' random crash has been there for a year and a half with no progress. DX12 has been coming since at least November 2015. They had a stupid bug that fucked the .ini of the game and caused the resolution to be rewritten to a number that wouldn't work causing the game to not boot without deleting the .ini and the devs were completely unaware until me and a few admins off one of the larger servers figured it out eventually and told them. Their solution was add a boot option that resets the resolution rather than fix the bug. The game has about 8 boot options because the game is botched.

Just warning any trust in them is wasted. They're also currently in a law suit for breach of contract with the lead dev working on the game under a no compete clause and suspected of working on the game while still at the previous company.

Ah, bummer. Guess this game isn't for me then.

Sweet Jeezus, Jo and Mary, what am I looking at? This dethrones Oblivion as the best abomination-creator of all times! Are the devs using an engine that was designed for horror games?

lol?

That is not the case at all.

It used to be up to 10 people, then 5. Now it's just 1 but Sony has been on board with that since PS3.

With that said. You can have as many accounts shared with you as your heart can contend with. Xbox One also has this by the way.

Is this really true? Is there no PVE or anything to do as a single player game?

We booted it up a month-ish ago to check out the center, and it still ran really bad PC with an overclocked 970, and I didn't see any core game improvements, just more dinos. They may fix it, but they've made promises before they couldnt keep.

I never did bother with officials. I usually stuck to pvp 5x-10x and later offline raid protected servers. I just didnt have a good overall experience since either everything goes and you die to offline raiding, or everyone whines to the admins which discourage pvp completely and ruins the community. To survive these games in pvp you need to commit to playing every second you can and a single night missed puts you way behind other tribes.

The only time I had a valuable experience was when I had a group of 8 of us playing, and we basically had to skip work and any responsibilities in life to keep from getting slaughtered. Then the admin reset the sever randomly :/

I'm at work looking at the store on the app. I see Ark for $60, a bundle for $55, and Scorched Earth for $20. Guessing I need to get the bundle but why is there a $60 version?

Is there a sandbox type mode where you can just play offline and mess with stuff, similar to Minecraft Creative? I have the PC version, but with all of the updates, it will no longer run on my crappy laptop. He used to love just running with dino's and I would probably get the PS4 version if it had a similar mode.

Is this really true? Is there no PVE or anything to do as a single player game?

You're gameplay loop as single player will be getting attacked by Dino's with AI that's about 2-3 generations out of date. That's the extent of the PVE and honestly it all goes out the window as soon as you've got even a relatively ok tame. Even with just a raptor or something you will be well defended from 90% of the species with the last 10% being quite OP. If you happen to tame anything strong then there's maybe or two dino's left who could even be a threat at that point.

Taming is very tedious solo by the way as a high level powerful tame can take hours upon hours. Something like a Mosasaurus will take around 4 hours if you have the very best food, which would take months to collect in that quantity. You're better off going after Prime Meat since you can get it on the spot, but that means leaving your tame unguarded. On prime it would take around 17 hours. The game is not made to be played solo and it's barely manageable even in a large group.

Damn, $60 for base game, another $20 for expansion? I swore this was cheaper when I picked it up for my son on the Xbox One:

https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/search/q=ark

So what is the Survivor's Pack, just DLC stuff?

$60 is expensive but I might buy it since I love playing Rust on PC.

According to their site, there should only be the $55 bundle on the US store. It should include the base game and scorched Earth expansion. I think Sony fucked up with the $60 version showing up in the store.

I can't get over how expensive it is on PS4. I know living in Canada makes the conversion suck regardless, but $74 for an unfinished, very new-player unfriendly game is insanity. Especially when it can be had in it's entirely for half that on PC. I want this game, but I don't know if I can justify that much money when there are so many other worthwhile games.

Had to be a pricing error in the U.S., I'm only seeing the Survivor's pack in the store and not the base or expansion separately.

I hesitate. Got 7 days to die and it seemed too buggy and incomplete. ARK is sounding the same.

At least it was 20-30 though, not 60.

I'm not liking the trend now of pre-alpha games for sale a retail prices, instead of free.

Take heed if you're curious about buying the game, the developers aren't exactly 100% trustworthy, this is one of those games that could end up being unfinished down the line.

That actually runs pretty well! The graphics are definitely worse than the PC version but it's a much better performing one than the Xbox One. I wonder how it's like on the regular PS4.
