Ark Survival Evolved is out now on PS4

So after playing this last night here are my concerns -

There is no tutorial whatsoever
The UI is horrible
The graphics are terrible
You die of hunger very fast
It's very unforgiving to n00bs
People quite often wait for cover of darkness and then rob you blind - leaving you KO'd and starving
The UI is horrible
The field of view is awful when trying to attack a dinosaur
Your character doesn't carry over from server to server meaning if your server is full.... sorry you can't play or you start again
The UI is horrible
The food 'spoils' in less than a 24 hour cycle
Joining friends is difficult to achieve
Finding friends on the map is impossible because lol no map

That was ÂŁ30 down the swanny

I bought this under the hope it'll be like, 7 Days to Die.
Now, it will Die in 7 Days.

:(

I bought it on a friends 'praise'

He got into a server with some of his other friends, server full so I can't join. They went full HAM building massive wooden structures and taming raptors.

Here I am sitting in my tiny little thatch shed freezing my ballsack off

ÂŁ30? It's about ÂŁ23 on Steam, and it was around ÂŁ11.50 in the sales last week! Sounds like a right mess.

I will never support another wild card project after all the shenanigans surrounding this game. Funny thing is, roughly this time last year i was willing to throw money at future projects assuming they supported Ark properly (which around this time last year i was absolutely in love with)...needless to say that hasn't been the case IMO. Ark single-handedly ruined early access for me and i wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.

I disagree.. U dont die of hunger fast. I didn't eat anything well into the next day and was only down 50%. If u have food and its spoiling.. Why didn't you eat it.

Yeah it's on PS4 for ÂŁ29.99.

I just requested a refund from Sony on the grounds of it being faulty. Half the screen goes black because of the sun reflecting off the water....

Fingers crossed they give me my money back. Horrible game. Would avoid at all costs.

My guy was freezing which apparently makes you more hungry. It was pitch black when I spawned and I had no access to campfire or torch.
He died before the morning. Probably because I was forced to eat raw fish which by the way I only knew was right next to me because it was biting me.

I'm so sorry dude. This is why I don't spend more than about ÂŁ16-ÂŁ20 on digital titles, and even then I have some hesitation. When are we going to get refunds like Steam, Sony?!

Thats Ark is your new to the genre of Survival games you have to be prepared to struggle for a long time while it clicks.

At first I would struggle just to stay alive not it's not even a thought,

The first thing you need to do is find your friends, join their tribe and make a bed so you respawn in the same spot as your mates just for quality of life stuff.

Staying alive at first is just eating a lot of berries from the plants, you're not going to be able to do much more till you learn more and get over the first part of the difficulty curve.

Some people these games are just not for but if you put in a good few hours it will start to make sense.

I haven't played for months and month tho, not sure on the changes but looking forward to achievements coming on on the 14th so I have an excuse to dip back in.

Can I just say, it was a magical, and yet sobering experience reading your posts over the last 4 pages.

Hopefully you can take solace in the fact that it was a highly entertaining saga, and you have no doubt steered a number of other lurkers away from impulse buying this game, haha.

I watched the (extremely tantalising) trailer and immediately thought of sharing with a buddy, but I'll hold off until it's much cheaper at least.

Hope you can find your friends and have some fun :)

I am quite a knee-jerker

We just came into some money so I thought hey, I've been a good boy this year. Let's fucking splurge.

What a terrible god damn game.

This was quite an amazing sentence to read.

Why are all open world dinosaur games cursed?

Went in expecting Jurassic Park

Came out like this

This bears repeating:

THE TRAILERS ARE NOTHING LIKE THE GAME

Performance is more than likely never going to get better. They've had almost 2 years on PC and they haven't fixed performance to any noticeable degree. This is on UE4 which is even more embarrassing.

Also still haven't delivered on DX12 which they promised over a year ago as well.

Yeah, reading up on this makes it sound more and more like a scam.

First person Don't starve?

Don't Starve is really great though, and very well balanced. Amazing presentation too, and pretty much flawless performance.

Yes, I concur. Thank you DG for being our Guinea Pig, and again you have my commiserations. I hope you get your money back!

I wonder if they should be investigated by advertising agencies, like how the ASA recently did in the UK with Hello Games.

I doubt it, you can do pretty much everything they show. It's just a heavily scripted and idealistic version of the game that leaves out the ugly parts.

As a fan of Rust since release, I've never understood how people like Ark. Especially looking at the console version which dips under 30fps regularly and looks like it's running sub-720p. I heard from so many people that Ark is really polished for being early access, but it feels significantly more broken than most games I've bought in early access. If you want a multiplayer survival game, at least on PC, there's half a dozen games that offer much better experiences.

Is it possible to play this offline SP? The trailer looked AWESOME

Looking at some streams now..is the stream blurry or actually the game hmm

(loved dino riders as a kid, could this finally be it?)

Exactly my thoughts when I tried the Trial on the X1 last year...I know its a survival game but they should drop you in an optional tutorial that explains the game and controls a bit without dying in a quick easy quest or something...

This game has been on PC and Xbox One for some time - I think over two years on PC alone? So people should definitely do some research. The trailer is significantly different to the game in terms of production values.

This should be 3rd person and/or have mouse support.

Patch should be coming December 9th adding 1080p on Pro along with other fixes.

Also I think people should keep in mind that this is an early release game. It won't be perfect but is still one of the best experiences I've had this generation on the Xbox. Double dipped on the PS4 version and it looks to be about the same, which is a good thing since the Xbox version has come a long way since launch.

The beginning does require some patience but the same can be said for other survival games. It is unforgiving for new people but look up tips and it will be a lot better. I was frustrated with the game at first on the Xbox but looking over a beginners guide set me on the right path. Making cloth hats is an easy way to level up for example.

Some of your complaints are a bit exaggerated IMO. You don't really die of hunger fast at all. Find a tribe to play with and stick with it. In no time you'll see the joy of the game. If the server is full, we just wait until there's an open slot before joining. There are ways to transfer characters to other servers but that in itself brings balancing issues IMO.

Also don't play PVP unless you have experienced friends that know how to level fast. Surviving in PVE alone can be tough enough at times. Plus having a community of players in PVE is something else. Economies develop, alliances form, and it can be an engrossing experience.

If you were expecting jurassic Park, that's not what this game is meant to be.

I will never support another wild card project after all the shenanigans surrounding this game. Funny thing is, roughly this time last year i was willing to throw money at future projects assuming they supported Ark properly (which around this time last year i was absolutely in love with)...needless to say that hasn't been the case IMO. Odd, outside of releasing scorched Earth (which they learned from), I think they are the poster child of doing early access right. Constant communication with the community, a TON of free content added, and clear signs of improvement with more to come.

I forget how ruthless GAF can be at times. =p

Edit:

This bears repeating:

THE TRAILERS ARE NOTHING LIKE THE GAME

The trailer is heavily scripted but you can absolutely do everything in the game you see in the trailer. The general could be like the trailer if you formed a large community of a tribe but that is easier said than done. Of course the trailer doesn't show the early access aspects of the game but it's common for trailers to highlight the strength of games while skirting around the bad.

is there any difference between this game and the other hundreds survival simulator games on PC ??

is it still in Early access or is this the full game ?

Problem is he's a bit mistaken on some of his points. One example is the inability to find friends due to a lack of a map. There is a map and it's possible to spawn in the same general location. Later in the game you can build or find an electronic compass that shows your latitude and longitude to make it easier to determine your exact location.

The game does a great job for rewarding players who progress up in levels.

It's still early access. Not sure about many other survival games but this is a much better game than 7 days to die on console.

Sorry, I think that the game is a giant stinker. Fitting that you walk around shitting yourself every couple of minutes while freezing, getting too hot, getting dehydrated, starving to death and getting chased by dinosaurs while punching trees and rocks. You could not pay me to deal with all of that in order to get rewarded. These games are just not for some of us. But even if it were, this one in particular is still a mess.

I understand Survival games aren't for everyone and definitely respect your opinion but you can literally have a tool and start building your character in less than a minute. I'm not even a huge fan of survival games, 7 days to die was horrible and Minecraft can't hold my interest but Ark is really rewarding if you learn the system and stick with it.

I think a lot of the early impressions are due to a lack of understanding and/or patience.

To each their own though, even with the flaws I've had experiences with this game that I've never had in a game before. Traveling around looking for a prime spot to build a base while other people riding a T-Rex run by saying hi and dropping items for us beginners. Or running around on a raptor with three other tamed raptors following you while you're hunting for meat. There are some awesome times to be had in this game.

Is there no way to buy the non-bundled version in the NA store? All I can find is the $50 version and I feel like that's a lot for an unfinished game. I may just buy it on PC but I was waiting for the PS4 version.

It's possible for the European store but Sony wouldn't allow it for the NA store for some reason. At least you get the game and expansion at a discount. Still it does suck not having the option.

Yeah, I was only looking at the cheaper version just so I could dip my toes in before committing. Knowing me, I'll still buy it probably this weekend. Just would have been nice to have the option. I really enjoy survival games.

Was really excited about this game based on the sizzle videos and such. Played it for 30 minutes and hated almost every second of it.

Wish they offered some sort of ....solo experience I dunno. It was NOT fun.

Are the servers well populated?

Played Rust on the PC, I figure this one can't be harder since Rust is pretty brutal!

Anyone that played both can compare them?

Played for about 30 minutes last night on OG PS4 and can confirm the IQ is feckin' horrendous. Couldn't be any higher than 720p. Anything further than twenty yards from the screen looks like a Monet.

At first I thought it was part of the Scorched Earth DLC thing and I was actually seeing a heat haze, nope, apparently that's just the IQ...

There are far more impressive Xbox 360 games. Not to mention that the UI, character creator and game itself is just:

gagging-o.gif

Did they even try with this UI? I mean, wow. Probably one of the worst UI I've ever seen.

Also this - I'm not even convinced it works half the time, I just kept mashing buttons to make things happen.

(To think I bitched about NMS's UI making me hold down the button every time.)
