Arms Review Thread

Metacritic: 78

I'll be a little busy but I'll try and update. Lots of credit goes to the wonderful users in this thread.

IBTimes UK - 4/5
What Arms lacks in personality and content it makes up for in raw joy and a best-in-class motion control set-up that feels both comfortable and natural. Arms showcases once again that Nintendo is peerless when it comes to subverting genres without sacrificing what makes them great. Time will tell if Arms has legs to match Splatoon, but the early round scoreboards are certainly swinging in its favour.

Switchitalia.it - 8/10

Quick English summary:
"ARMS is a solid start for a brand new Nintendo IP: it is fresh, original, colorful and deep. The inventive approach to the fighting genre, especially due to the particular management of "punches" trajectories and extensible arms, alongside the attention to details spent by the team on characters, weapons and arenas, make ARMS a must buy for each Switch owner out there."

Easy Allies - 3.5/5

Nintendo aims to expand the game with free updates after release, but for now Arms lays a solid foundation for the future. The vibrant cast of characters, accessible mechanics and couch friendly co-op offer a distinctive fighting game that feels right at home on the Nintendo Switch. The battles eventually become routine but offer an alternative to other complex and competitive fighting games

GameSpot
- 7/10
Arms is a strong, substantial fighting game that takes a while to really hit its stride. Its barrier to entry is unlike anything else in the genre, but it's one worth tackling in order to get at the game's fascinating take on fighting.

Destructioid - 7/10
There's a lot of personality on the surface in Arms (mainly I love that title theme song), and I hope Nintendo continues to build on it as planned. It works as a fighter, I just wish there was more to do in this debut entry -- both pragmatically in terms of modes and on an emotional level, as I haven't really connected with its universe yet despite its raw sense of style.

US Gamer - 3/5
Arms has a lot to love, and unfortunately, a lot to forget too. After a year of planned updates, I imagine the Arms we see a year from now will be a drastically different game. A more fuller one, at that. In the meantime though, while it has potential with its layers of depth, the core game simply doesn't have enough variety among its many arms and fighters to keep the experience feeling fresh for long.

ARMS is something that only Nintendo could make

Eurogamer: Recommended
Arms does for fighting games what Mario Kart did for driving games, and the results are absolutely splendid

ARMS performs well as a new take on a well-worn genre, even if some of its elements aren't as revolutionary as billed. The motion controls aren't effective in the least and the Grand Prix mode is sure to raise the player's blood pressure, but there's enough fun mixed with the frustration for content-starved Switch owners to have a good time. ARMS may grab your interest for a while, but more complex fighters on other consoles are going to take some of that attention away pretty quickly.

Verdict: Yes

reviews seem about where I expected them (78-82) due to the nature of the game mechanics

with all the free content coming the only way to go is up though, much like Splatoon

Yeah, I'm expecting 70-75. The game has little content at launch based on early murmurings, but eventually, it's going to be a juggernaut like Splatoon, if it catches on. The Test Punch was great!

Good! The Testpunch was enough to convince me (and fuck the haters I love motion controls!) but it's nice to see that others like it too!

Hmm, a consensus seems to be forming: Very fun and original game, but not much there and concerns over replayability.

Yeah this looks like what I expected so far. If it clicks, you really like it. It seems like a game that really depends on that click happening though.

Still, solid start for a new IP. Had fun with the testpunch, just not sure if I'll bite the bullet or not at launch. Hopefully the DLC is awesome.

Nintendo World Report - 8

The raw gameplay of Arms is mostly brilliant, layered with far more strategy than meets the eye. Best as a multiplayer experience, everything coalesces beautifully when you’re rocking split-screen multi or chilling in a lobby online as you gear up for the next arm-chucking spectacle. The single-player focus is definitely a little on the light side, but the variety of options and modes help mostly make up for that failing. No matter your preference, Arms is likely something you’ve never really seen before, and that’s radical as long as you’re up to giving it some time.

I gave it a 4/5. I am still slightly worried that ARMS will have trouble with longevity and finding its place as a fighting game, but I still really enjoyed the game as a whole.

After spending two weeks with ARMS, I’m still slightly skeptical about whether it will be able to maintain long-term appeal. As a fighting game, ARMS demands more than simple button mashing and Joy-Con waggling, but its low skill ceiling isn’t doing it any favors with the hardcore fighting community. But in the here and now, ARMS is a clear winner, and in many ways, is the kind of game the platform needs in its early stages.

Wow. I got the exact opposite impression from the Testpunch.
