Arms Review Thread

I had a feeling it will lack a lot of the essential modes on release when they promised free updates and characters. Glad the reviews are being fair.
 
On launch there's what (speaking purely from memory here), 10 characters, 10 maps, 8 modes, a ton of ARMS to collect and customize, obviously online player/ranked modes and that is day one. Splatoon wasn't even close in comparison which was for the same price. Sure, it had a somewhat meaty 3-5 hour single player campaign and while it was enjoyable I wouldn't say it was the highlight of the package - especially since I found replaying much of it tedious when doing the Amiibo challenges.

For $60 I'd say it's not bad. Could be better, but I've paid the same for less. Both Overwatch and Splatoon felt like they were in desperate need for more content, and in the case of the former that content took way too long to rear it's head.

I'd welcome more single player content but something like Injustice 2 or Tekken 7's "story mode" is a one and done complete "whatever" to me that I'll never return to. I'd want more multiplayer modes that does creative stuff like Hoops and V-Ball.
 
....Because it doesn't have the content? Like I said? I'm not entirely talking about singleplayer content, but multiplayer. Clearly enough reviewers enjoyed Overwatch for what it was, as it scored significantly better.

And sure, it might be worth 60 in half a year when it's actually content complete, I'll give you that.

People buy 60 games with 4-6 hours of content so honestly it's all relative. In your opinio it's not worth it to buy Arms now in mine it is.

I got Splatoon 1 later because of this but when i finally played the game i though damn i wish i was there at the start.

So that's why i want it day one to enjoy the community and events, i sadly for example missed all splatfests.

Anyway it'a all personal i for example though why would i buy resident evil 7 at 60? The playtime is around 6-8 hours and i am sure i will get more than 100 out of Arms in party mode alone.

You do you, and I hope you enjoy it. It does look like fun beyond the lack of content.

But as a potential new Switch owner, I'm iffy about getting this when MK8 exist and Splatoon is right around the corner.
 
I still find it pretty sad how much Neogaf users rely on reviews instead of forming an opinion yourself. That or use reviews to brag about the game or trash it.

Yeah, of course any game would review and sell better at a lower pricepoint, but not every game deserves to be 60.

Witcher 3 for example is absolutely a game that warrants a 60 dollar price tag (more, tbh).

However, from what I can tell, Arms does not. The content is simply not there, as fun as it might be. The price should reflect that.
I wish, the developers of Witcher 3 put more time and money into there fighting system, then i would have finished there game. You put some part of the money for ARMs into the testing of a new and fun game-mechanic. Content isn't everything in a game.

Practically everything is subjective, and you're here, on a gaming discussion forum, discussing purely subjective review scores because you seem to care about that.

To me, telling other people that believe this game might have sold better and reviewed better at a lower price point, that their opinions are invalid, seems like a complete waste of time.

From a glance, this game does seem like it warrants a full price-tag, to me, so what?

No one disputed the obvious likelihood of a game reviewing and selling better if it has a lower price point. But saying it doesn't "deserve" to be priced at $60 is just silly. Just simply say you don't want to buy it for $60. The former just makes people want to roll their eyes when they read it.
 
Ah! This is what I'm doing with Splatoon. I played the test fire events for Splatoon 1 but held off on getting it. When I heard how they were rolling out content I decided to skip it for the inevitable sequel (it would have had to sold atrociously bad for there to not be at least one sequel). My hope is that Splatoon 2 content-wise will pick up where the first game left off and expand from there.

I'm assuming they will cull some content from the final version of Splatoon to release a clean product while leaving room for more content to release in the future.
 
Game may not be perfect, but looks pretty fun for me.

And interesting for working out at home.

This will be the first esport game where you trully practice sport, haha.

Wow I didn't even realize it was 60. Thought it was 40. Played the beta and thought to myself "this is....ok, but not for 40."

60 is a HELL no for me.
 
And now to wait nine days 😭 I'm getting Horizon as a birthday present this weekend though so that'll help keep me busy. That and E3 lol

They get that presence from marketing or being attached to a known IP. And an important distinction is that many of your examples, to my knowledge, release content monthly at the quickest.

Since we're going nowhere, I'll swap to personal experience. Map additions get less exciting the more of them there are. Move Flounder Heights to the back of the schedule and it would have been the most boring announcement in existence. Splatoon 2 is suffering from this because the first game ended with so many maps, that different layouts are far less exciting.
This isn't exclusive to eastablished IPs though. Good games get talked about regardless of how well known the franchise is. Also, lets not pretend like there was no marketing for Splatoon. It had a huge push before release.

And while yes, these games do pump out new content every month or so, they also usually launch with a reasonable amount of content to begin with.

To go back to the Titanfall/Splatoon comparison, I definitely had more content provided to me in the first six months of Titanfall than I did Splatoon. The first 6 months of Splatoon DLC and the first six months of Titanfall 2 DLC provided the same amount of maps, and Titanfall launched with almost double the maps Splatoon did, so at the end of those six months I had four or five more maps to play in Titanfall than I did in Splatoon. They also added new Titans, modes, and skins. The only aspect I can think of that Splatoon outclasses Titanfall in content in guns, but outside of that I've gotten more with Titanfall. And that doesn't even get into the fact that some of the updates to Splatoon were things that pretty much every online game has at launch like ranked battle and private matches.

You're essentially arguging that it's good for Nintendo to hold back content and make it feel like you're getting more when youre actually, at best, getting the same amount you'd get with a game that has a robust selection at launch and is steadily supported for months after it's release.

I don't know why or how anyone would see launching a game with five maps and adding more later as a better system for the player than launching a game with nine maps and adding more later just like the game that only launched with five did.

Lol I don't blame you. Don't usually go for multiplayer stuff, but I have a gift card, so why not.
 
Lower reviews than I was expecting. I'm a bit worried this game wont have the kind of longevity that I hope for and the reviews didn't erase any concerns there. I suppose I'll find out for myself soon enough.
 
Lack of content I suspected. But I'm not too concerned given the confirmed free DLC and Nintendo showing they can come through and alleviate this considering how they handled Splatoo 1. Shame about the no SP though. Still, Testpunch was enough fun for me to keep my pre-order on lock.

What Arms lacks in personality and content it makes up for in raw joy and a best-in-class motion control set-up that feels both comfortable and natural. Arms showcases once again that Nintendo is peerless when it comes to subverting genres without sacrificing what makes them great. Time will tell if Arms has legs to match Splatoon, but the early round scoreboards are certainly swinging in its favour.

This seems extremely poorly worded. The characters are bursting with personality. Saying stuff isn't done with them via lore/fleshing out I can see, but their designs alone inject so much personality and style into the game.
 
Interesting. The GameXplain review said that Ranked mode doesn't contain any items.

Wasn't it said earlier that items would still be in play for Ranked?
 
Never cared for single player content for games like these, where the bulk of the complaints seem to lie. It's like buying Nintendo games for the cinematic feels and content. It just...doesn't make sense. You might as well buy Starcraft for a train simulation experience.

Anyway I did the testpunch and I have actual experience with the game and game play now. It was so much dang fun. Can't wait to get the full game next Friday!
 
Strangely, I don't recall Mario Kart 8 (or Deluxe) getting hammered very hard score-wise in reviews for lack of single-player content or storyline, considering all you really had for single player was...grand prix.

Now we have a game designed by the same devs and the major single player content is...grand prix. But I'd say the overall package of options and side-modes in ARMS actually outdoes Kart.

The bigger issue is that despite being a pretty distinct product with a fun core, ARMS is coming out at a time where its other fighting game contemporaries have had their basics built for so long that their devs are now putting more into other presentational trimmings. I suppose they could have gone that route too, but given Nintendo's general philosophy as well as the climate at the time ARMS was first being pitched and created, I can understand why they wouldn't put in that time and expense.

But it's not so cut and dry.

People moaned about SFV and it's lack of content, yet I've put in over 600 hrs in it. And I still continue to play it every day. Contrast this with BotW where I put in 'only' 125 hrs, and likely won't touch it until the DLC comes out.

People are different and value things differently. Someone might spend every night playing ARMS online. That absolutely would be worth $60.

Mario Kart is an institution at this point and I think people have accepted that it's almost purely a multiplayer game. And Deluxe is absolutely loaded with MP content.
 
I think these reviews would be a lot more concerning if I didn't play the testpunch. I know what I'm getting and had a blast with that.
 
So the major complaints seem to be the same as for Splatoon1 and that turned out to be my most played game in last gen by a lot. Day 1 for me :)

I in fact enjoyed the content roll out of Splatoon 1, it was fun discovering new weapons and maps and talking to people on hwat strategies to use or useful shortcuts in the new/updated maps. I´m going to love discovering all the new characters and arms types, learning to use them, trying crazy combinations and exchanging info with ARMS-Gaf.
 
Apparently, if you read the Ars review closely, there may/may not be a spoiler about the grand prix boss. Got this from the r/ARMS subreddit.
 
I expected high 70s/mid 80s so this falls right in line.

I had fun with the online demo, but I don't know if I'm good enough or was impressed enough to get it myself. Wouldn't mind seeing others play it though.
 
It's still good I guess, only because some magazines gave it a 6 or even a 5 doesn't mean it's a bad game. There are a lot of 8s and 9s even. 24 reviews scoring it with 80 and 10 with 90 actually.
