Arms Review Thread

It would be cool if Nintendo announced a Day 1 update with a new character and set of ARMs at E3. The game comes out two days after their presentarion. Could help build up more hype along with the Treehouse tournament and hammer home the idea of *free* DLC.

I'm very happy with the amount kf content it already has. Can't wait to have jt in my hands in a few days. 👊🏻

But arms' characters and setting are bland af, don't be surprised of people thinking that when most people who think the opposite are rabid Nintendo fans that are content with their current output

People been saying empty claims like "arms is nintendo's overwatch". I have never played that game yet I am aware of what most characters look like/their archetypes due to the sheer internet presence it has. Between the very active fan art scene and animation shorts made because of that, you have a modern example of a multiplayer-only game with barely any story that won over the people due to it's memorable characters. Arms tho? You see twintelle booty retweeted by dank meme kids at best

Yes, we should compare a game that hasn't even come out yet, and when it does will only be on a single system that's only sold a few million units to one that came out over a year ago on 3 platforms. Surely it's fair to think both should have the same exposure and fan community. Yup, nothing suspect or completely illogical and laughable about pitting the two against one another.

The Arms characters are bland af? I...cannot see that
 
I will play the heck out of this with the wife, and even perfect for pick up and play a quick round on portable mode.

Also free content coming....

I can see this being a fun ride. Im jumping in.
 
Could these poor reviews reveal a glimmer what will happen to Splatoon 2? Perhaps Nintendo shouldn't rush their games out ..
 
So what's the rollout like in terms of content? Have they hinted at its trajectory?


I've been lukewarm towards this game since it was first showed but I played online during the test punch and it was pretty damn compelling. There is a certain boxing quality to this game that surprised me.


These reviews are making me consider Arms if the DLC delivers well.

iirc overwatch was huge right when the beta came out

Illogical and laughable comparison? Blame the crazy arms fanboys that named it that or "the next splatoon" since it's reveal. It's okay to be optimistic about the game or liking the testfire or whatnot but don't be surprised that it simply doesn't capture the imagination as much as other franchises

So being optimistic that it might be as popular as other games means we should directly compare it to other, well established, games and point out that it falls short for obvious reasons ? And the Overwatch fanart and craze came after the beta when Blizzard start releasing supplementary material, DLC, events and videos since, just like ARMS, most of that isn't in the game

It could be a lot better but Arms seems completely pointless if you are only into single player games like myself.

I'll still probably buy it though as I can get a good deal on it if I resell it.
 
I have yet to see the W101 bomba posts they were kinda funny with Splatoon.

Now Arms won't sell as much but it sure will outsell SFV and around a couple of mill (2-3m).
 
I like how people are automatically fanboys just for saying the ARMS cast reminds them of Overwatch's, or that it could be the next Splatoon. I mean, hell, there's both articles and reviews out there that help fuel the comparisons as well... So don't blame the "fanboys" for making obvious comparisons.

Regarding the Splatoon comparison in particular, that's an easy one to make, considering the quirky take on the fighting game genre just like Splatoon was a quirky take on multiplayer shooters, as well as the game following a similar model in regards to free DLC. Why wouldn't someone label it as being the "next Splatoon"? It'll likely be far less popular considering the genre, but the label is really nothing to get so worked up over when there's an obvious basis for the comparisons.

As for the Overwatch one: Colorful and diverse cast. Apparently lots of fanart. Lore around the world, as well as backgrounds for the characters that will be trickled out. Not a hard jump to make there. It'd be one thing if someone said it'd match or surpass the Overwatch cast's popularity, as that would be a silly prediction, but to my knowledge, no one said anything of the sort. Just because people say something is the next this or that, doesn't mean it's this exact 1:1 situation where they're saying that ARMS will literally be just as popular lol

Not much to unlock beyond kart parts, no need to complete 50 and 100cc if you do 150cc, no award ceremony with the big fish, no MK DS style missions.

ARMS disappoints me more though, as that game does have (and imo need) story related content but for some odd reason Nintendo only chose to make use of it in the promotional materials and Directs. That awesome lore video about how the ARMS started to appear on people is a good example of something they should have put in the game as part of a (SFV/MKX style cinematic) story mode of sorts that links all the characters together while telling their motivations and backstory.

Edit: I just thought about Fire Emblem Echoes and how that lower priced remake on a handheld blows full priced console ARMS out of the water in terms of presentation (outside of the graphics).

It's not a completely fair comparison of course with FE being a single player game focused on storytelling, but the difference is big enough to make ARMS stand out in a negative way due to its complete lack of any cutscenes, full voice acting (even for Biff who was fully voiced in the Direct videos) and other story related content. It reminds me of SFV and how everything about that game's launch screamed "limited budget" to me compared to pretty much all other fighting games (MK9 and X, GG Xrd, KI, Injustice 2, KOFXIV). Hopefully ARMS will follow SFV's solution in the sense that it will get more story and presentation related stuff as free DLC instead of just characters, stages and ARMS.

Or you could read the actual reviews instead of just looking at the scores. The summary quotes are right in the OP.

Calling the reviews poor is wrong on a factual level.
 
I'm not fussed about the lack of a story mode. They could have copied and paste the Soul Edge/Calibur story into the game and it would sound great but the gameplay is more important. (Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS also showed that a story mode isn't important when you compare it to the Subspace Emissary from Smash Bros Brawl)

If I can't feel like playing online or against CPUs then it becomes a problem to want to play the game.

The Testpunch showed that the online play works well regarding latency similar to Splatoon, the free content updates of more characters/stages/weapons will be crucial for giving the game longevity.

It's not "poor" but when you have limited time, limited money and there are so many amazing games already released that are demanding your time and dollar, games that score a 75 might not be good enough for some folks. Games aren't created and released in a vaccuum.

Agreed. I've seen other games get treated like garbage below 80 here. I guess cause this is 1st party so there's allowances that have to be made.
 
Glad it's green on metacritic with some really positive reviews. It seemed a little shallow for me during a testpunch, but people seem to like it. I'll grab it when it gets more content and hopefully drops in price. I love the aesthetics and the whole premise behind it. I wish it gets a Splatoon-like following so they can deliver ARMS2 better suited towards single player enthusiasts. So far seems like a solid new IP. Seeing Nintendo taking more risks when it comes to expanding their portfolio makes me very happy.
 
I have enjoyed games in the 50 range seriously Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky a 54 score (this game was great imo and in no way a 5.4) and GTA IV 98 lmao.

That's why i don't really follow most reviews and just watch gameplay etc or try the game if possible.

I enjoyed the test punch so i will get Arms.
Heck i skipped Splatoon 1 because at looking at a dumb score. When i pkayed the Splatoon 2 testfire i really regretted that and when i finally played 1 welp missed al those splatfest events.

The reason why i don't believe GTA IV deserves it's score is because all the fun stoff that was in Vice City and San Andreas was gone, it was a real life crime simulator instead of a more fun open world game like the older ones.

But that is just my opinion on it it's perfectly fine to rely on reviews or MC i did aswell at first but now i just don't care anymore. I will lookup a gameplay vid or try a demo if possible nowadays before i buy.

Well I mean, there was a Testpunch demo, so it wouldn't be surprising if a good amount of people don't care as much about the average score since they already more or less know what they're getting into lol

That's true. It's just silly all around really. I personally didn't like what I played so the scores are about what I expected not terrible but not perfect either.

Caveat - none of those - BotW, MK8, and Shovel Knight - are exclusive to the platform.

Also Splatoon 2 will be judged against Splatoon, itself an 80, so if it's not as iterative as it could be (i.e., more innovation than just halving the 2-map cycling from 4 hours to 2), it will review poorer than Splatoon. I see 78-84 for Splatoon 2.

Because the majority of them aren't "lower than 70" games. Flagship first-party titles can have flaws, they can launch with bugs. They are rarely truly bad games.

This is a really stupid post. But I suspect you knew that, and figured an edgy hot take was more important than looking sensible.
 
Actually could it be a motion control thing? Each time Nintendo tries something with a different control scheme it always gets mixed reviews besides splatoon

It's really not that edgy. The post uses the qualifiers "most" and "content," which are pretty diplomatic terms if you're trying to rock the boat.
