i feel it's pretty obvious rewatching that third season that, though it was still very funny, hurwitz and the other writers were feeling a lot of stress about the impending cancellation of the show. it even came through often in the show's jokes; it became a little too self-aware.

i have a lot of faith that the upcoming movie can be just as good as the best of the show, with everyone having lots of time to develop a hilarious script and bolstered by the obvious enthusiasm of everyone involved.

but do think that the current season of 30 Rock is FAR AND AWAY the show's best. To the point, the Valentine's Day episode of 30 Rock for me was the series high.

It's definately gotten better as the season progressed with Valentine's Day being the best, but I feel that the show, since the writers strike, has become a bit more slap stick / sillier to the point I can actually see the jokes coming (like the repeated jokes about Liz's food obsession). It's a shame because old AD and old 30 rock were funny because they were unpreditable and really well written.

That's how I felt about S03. Were they the same writers from the previous seasons though? Because the dip in quality was quite high.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the writing staff left after season 2 (save for Hurwitz) and it kinda showed at times. Season 3 is easily the weakest season, i have to say. Some of the story threads were painfully unfunny - Tobias' hair plugs and his degenerating health being the main one. Aside from the undeniably strong final episodes, the season was a bit of a disappointment to me on first viewing. On subsequent rewatches i have only grown to love it more despite some occasionally flat jokes and overused callbacks.

writers leaving? yikes. i'm going to have to do some recon on that and figure out who the key players were, and if they'll be on board for the movie.

was this something that happened to futurama too? i'm curious as to what caused that show's more subtle decline. not saying i didn't like the fourth season, but it became very much more about the dramatic side of the show and less gut-bustingly funny. that actually worked out quite well for the fry/leela storyline ultimately, with "the devil's hands are idle playthings" putting a fantastic cap on the show. the movies. . . eh, not so much.

Don't know about the 4th season, but the movies were all written by one or two people, instead of getting passed through a full writer's room.

For me, watching season 3 was bittersweet, because I watched on DVD (day one, of course) with the knowledge that season 4 would probably never happen. The first watch through seemed way too self aware (mentioned in this thread before) and just a little more slapstick than the first two seasons.

Yet, as always, after multiple viewings, it got funnier and better. The difference in quality isn't enough to warrant a "Simpson's" type bold claim ("Nothing After Season ____ is funny!"). But there is a difference.

Also, for some reason, on my first S3 viewing, I laughed hardest at the Bud Cort joke.:lol

This is not a movie to worry about regarding the box office. It doesn't matter. There's not going to be a sequel, and the show isn't coming back. We are in the bonus round, people, just enjoy it.

Seriously.. stop making vague comments to insinuate that you're Cera. You're not. Go look in the mirror.
I never said I was. :lol

I love people who take things way, way too seriously.

The article from the OP was updated, just wanted to make sure everyone saw the extra little tidbit:

Our own Michael Yo just broke this news to Portia de Rossi! Her response? "That's crazy that you just told me that. Thank you." (Such a polite cast!) So what was the holdup with Michael? Says Portia, "I don't know, I honestly don't. I spoke to Jason Bateman and Will Arnett; I think it was just a matter of timing. I don't know." Portia reports that she doesn't have a script yet, but she is on board even though all the contracts still need their T's crossed and I's dotted: "I just verbally said, 'Hey, I'll do it too.'" As for plot twists, Michael wanted to know: Would there be a Jason/Portia hookup in the movie? Says Portia, "Oh, we're not siblings anymore! That's weird. I don't know about that. That's creepy." She says creepy. What say you? Post in the comments!

Heh. Found that funny for some reason.

Michael: I’m just not that into older women.

Lindsay: You bastard!

Anyone have a GIF of Lindsay pwning Michael during this exchange?

Wow, I just found out that Portia de Rossi got all sorts of naked in some movie called Sirens.

...awesome :D

I don't know, 30 Rock is funny, but it's nothing compared to Arrested. This was hammered home when I watched an episode of 30 Rock followed by an old episode of AD I hadn't seen in well over a year; it's just so far above and beyond anything and everything else.

It's not so much that season 4 is less funny than season 3 - although I think that on the whole that's probably true, because season 3 was exceptionally funny - so much as the fact that the most memorable episodes in the former tended to be the show's most dramatic ones, like the final episode or Jurassic Bark. The flip is true for seasons 1 through 3, where the best episodes tended to be the funniest ones, and/or those with songs.

With AD, however, there was a definite and noticeable decline in the third season, but I still think it's pretty great overall. The sideplots, particularly those involving Tobias, got kind of obnoxious at times, but I liked the Rita plotline (a lot, actually) which was a major source of complaints for many fans, and I thought the last few episodes were excellent. I still remember feeling a very odd mixture of sadness and laughter when I watched the final episode, which was simultaneously hilarious (because it's AD) and depressing (because it was the last one) for me.

Thats odd I thought the Rita storyline was really really bad although I agree Tobais kind of ran out of steam at points slightly.

However I can say that when Rita left I think the later half of Season 3 contained some of my fave episodes from all 3 seasons so I don't know if it declined or not it got a bit more silly and then a bit more awesome. I need to rewatch the whole 3 seasons anyway before the movie.

Probably my favorite too. Pretty much every time she was on screen she was insanely funny. How she got through that 'cornholing' rant with a straight face I have no idea.

Im gunna go watch season one again :D havent done so in a while. have to say apart from the britain part of the story line in season three i loved every second of the show. favourite scene is still the GOB "im in love with your brother in law" sequence :D

Oh happy day! Drinks all around; good times, people! :D

Each season had a huge crop of new writers and bunch of old writers leaving. I don't think it's that noticeable, especially because it's always Hurwitz leading the show. If season 3 suffered (which I don't agree with) it was because of the shortened schedule.

soooo it'll be years befor this is even started?

No, from the podcast it sounds like Hurwitz will be writing it this summer.

THIS IS AWESOME

The only thing I am worried about with this movie is the writers feeling they need to explain a ton of backstory and jokes to the audience that has presumably no knowledge of the show.

I'm fine with some background Ron Howard narration but please don't dumb it down :D

:lol :lol :lol

Watching AD last night... the scene where GOB is being taken to court by his forgotten wife, he tells Barry, "I just want my wife back!"

Barry says, "Ok, Tom Jane."

So many blink and you'll miss jokes. If the movie isn't layered like this, I will be very disappointed.

This shit is surreal, my ipod shuffeled right to "The Final Countdown" as I opened this thread... a sign of things to come.
