As a Wii-U owner, what is my motivation to Switch?

I have the same dilemma. Mario Odyssey was the only thing that looked new and fresh. I think Nintendo are aiming the Switch at an audience who didn't previously own a Wii U and are just presuming their Wii U hardcore are dedicated enough to grab one anyway.

I'm in somewhat of the same boat as you. There's nothing in the first few months of the console's life that I don't have (or have something very similar to) on the Wii U. I pre-ordered it though because I'm somewhat of a mindless simpleton and I love the latest version of things I already have.

Still, I'm not going to pull the trigger on it until they clear up what's going on with the account system. I have quite a bit of digital purchases tied up into my Wii U. Probably near $1,000 worth of games. As mindless as I am that's still a question I need answered before I jump to the next system.

I think they talked about being able to upgrade VC your games to switch for like 1 buck a piece i could be wrong tho.

Other than the new and / or updated games catalog, having a portable system with Wii U levels of IQ and whatnot is a selling point to me.

And as much as I like my 3DS, I have a feeling that some games work better on the go but being able to play them on a big screen while I'm home can't be bad either.

The brilliance that is going to be Super Mario Odyssey. If you bought a Wii U you're probably a big Nintendo fan and wouldn't want to miss out on it. You can probably wait until the holidays unless you love getting new consoles at launch.

I disagree. I think it's solid for its first year. Decent amount of major releases.

The Wii U's first year was FAR worse in my opinion.

Don't set that bar too high now.

The Switch line-up is "okay" for the first year, yet this depends on Mario O and Xenoblade 2 making their dates (Splatoon 2's appeal is grossly overestimated by nintendo fans imo) , and given the fact that they couldn't even get MK8 ported to the console for launch i'm pretty skeptical of them actually making the 2017 dates. Launch window, it's terrible, given the biggest game can be played elsewhere.

Maybe. There is so much information flooding the internet about the switch right now but it's difficult to find exactly what you're looking for. I am sure it will be cleared up in the next couple weeks.

I agree that the Wii U was worse, but after Zelda, there's not much to look forward to imo. If these games launched closer together, it wold be a different story.

Looking at the graphics, there's zero reason why Super Mario Odyssey couldn't have come out on WiiU.

Portability is pretty much the most critical feature for a game for me, and certainly the thing pushing me towards upgrading from a WiiU to a Switch. However, if I mostly played games at home, I'd probably just get Zelda for the WiiU and look at the Switch and it's range of games this time next year instead.

I don't know why people feel like they have to make a now-or-never judgement on things at launch. At launch pretty much every console is a poor proposition compared to the ones you already have with hundreds of cheap games. A games console is invariably at its best once it's whole library is out, but some people seem to think that means it's at the end of its life just because nothing new is coming out for it. Best thing to do is to keep enjoying what you like for as long as possible, as jumping into a new system that will never be more expensive, have less features and less games is obviously the worst time to do so outside of sheer excitement for the new hotness.

Consoles don't explode when the new one releases, if you aren't feeling the Switch, don't Switch. Rock that Gamepad for as long as you like and more power to your elbow while you do so. You don't need to justify purchasing decisions, or choosing not to upgrade, here.

You can't do this on the Wii U

Too bad Nintendo is so much against doing M and R/AO rated games, there is amazing potential there.

There is none until Mario is out, and even then that's one game. I think at some point in 2018 they'll release a bunch of good games at the same time because their release pacing is terrible, and that's when it'll be time to get one.

Wii U was a failed console that is being replaced. If it had a healthy run I could see Nintendo releasing on both but they need to move on asap from the Wii U for the sake of their business.

I know you quote this picture because of the milking meme, but man, this picture show people having a pretty good time goofing around while you're seem so serious and bitter trolling the internet quoting this picture...

I just get a kick out of the picture haha, on a side note though. My brother and I pre-ordered a Switch and looking forward to it!

Not sure yet if I'll get 1, 2 Switch but got Zelda: ME pre-ordered as well :)

That's the biggest issue. The weakest link is the Switch in handheld mode so they have to code to that configuration, and handheld mode seems only marginally more powerful than a Wii U. The only benefit while docked is getting a native resolution(for some games), the textures and graphical effects won't be better.

Zelda ,Mario kart 8(new game for me), Fire Emblem Musou, Arms, Splatoon 2,Mario Odyssey,Xenoblade 2 all this year!
Also the rumors about Pokemon stars and Smash 4 port excite me.And the new SMT game. (I think they will be announced at E3)
I don't know,i don't find the lineup that bad. I also have a PS4 for 3rd party games however.

As a WII U owner, there is no reason for me to switch to switch at launch.
I will reconsider later on, and with great joy, when Xenoblade 2 and the new SMT game are released

I think the Switch is just gonna have a really slow start like some other consoles in the past. I guarantee a lot of ppl hating on it will end up owning one in 2 years as the software lineup continues to build

But by that time will the system be considered a flop already? Do we think in 3 years the switch will be cheaper or have more compelling games than the Wii U does right now? The Wii U isn't selling even though it is cheap and has a great library of games because it got the stink of a flop on it right from the start due to a super weak launch line up. The switch seems to have as weak or weaker of a line up.

I liked my Wii U, and off-screen play is a big seller to me for opening up my tv, and playing around the house. It at least seems like a better version of that so I'm in.

100% in agreement. Zelda coming to WiiU makes it an easy decision to wait to see more from Switch, or at least until Mario Odyssey is on shelves. We know how Nintendo software droughts go at this point, not falling for that shit again.

Launch there is no real reason, even in april if you have a wii u as mario kart is practically the same as the wii u version. I think its best to wait and see what nintendo have for this console because its obvious their launch lineup and even their first year is average at best.

There is no reason to buy switch at launch for us wiiu owners amd waiting till mario seems like the right move. Also i wouldnt be shocked if mario gets pushed to 2018.

Fire Emblem Musou

Before that, not sure.
I'll hold off on the switch and might buy Zelda on Wii U until Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Splatoon 2 are out. Can't believe I'm buying a console and Mario Kart 8 (+DLC) again just to play arena battle mode, aah.

If they announce more cool account features (cloud saves? please?) or anything else, I might get swayed, but so far my backlog is humongous enough on Wii U.

I did however just pre-order 2 Joycon's, in case someone in my friend circle ends up buying one, so we can get into some 4-player shenanigans. If I had more friends that are up for local multiplayer, not lying, I'd probably be there day 1. Carrying this thing over to a friend's house for Mario Kart looks so easy now!! (and to be frank, I did that a few times with the Wii U, and it wasn't heavy or bad - but just bringing the tablet and a charger cable looks a billion times less complicated!).
Also, 4 player Bomberman...

Portable Zelda
Portable Sonic
Portable everything.

If you don't play portables this isn't for you.

I'm not sure Nintendo would be cool with this sort of messaging lol. But yeah, I have a vita I rarely play, Switch isn't for me (yet)

OP, you're looking at it at a short term instead of long term as others in this thread has mentioned. While its ok for you to enjoy the Wii U, all of that you mentioned is not going to stay forever. Knowing Nintendo servers will shut down and 2 of your bullet points (miiverse and online play) will no longer function.

Also on FREE online, we don't know how much its going to be and you have a whole year of free online on the Switch. People somehow are treating this like they're going to pay 100 dollars a month...

I mean...sometimes long term views are good regarding prices and game libraries...do you really think the price of entry (console+ accessories) is reasonable given the library at launch?

switch is a giant fuck you to wii u oweners. i'm not buying all those games again like splatoon and mario kart when they can just jump ship again in 3 or 4 years.

How do the graphics of the Switch stack up against the Wii U? I've been out of the loop and skipped the Wii U but might jump on the Switch.

Fuck it, I just pulled the trigger and ordered Switch and Zelda for 399€.
I need Zelda in portable mode and make it feel the newest possible.
Playing it on Wii U won't be as magical, I want to move on from Wii U.
Plus I'll need one by Summer or November and it won't be 100€ cheaper by that time.

Love my Wii U and I consider myself a pretty big Nintendo fan, but at the moment I have zero intention of moving on to Switch.

Everything they showed about the hardware and their policies seem to be designed to dissapoint me on a personal level. Sure, they showed a number of promising games, but I'm not going to spend 300 on a gimmicky, overpriced console that's trying to bring motion controls back again. That ship has sailed.

In theory the Switch is a pretty great idea, and I was so ready to be hyped yesterday, yet they failed on so many levels it's not even funny. For once I hope they crash and burn and fire the entire management level of the company to get some fresh blood in.

I only made the move to Switch because of the extra trade in value. I would have been content playing Zelda on Wii U but I had a Wii U and New 3DS XL that weren't getting any use.

The only motivation you need is the fact that probably no new Nintendo games will be coming out in the WiI U. Do you want to play new games?

They're marketing it weird. I think it should be marketed as a portable, but what do I know.

I forgot sonic mania and generations 2 or whatever it's called come this year insane.

Your boy Sonic is going head to head with Mario in 3D platforming on the Switch. I'm stoked.

As a Wii U owner I realize that the system after Breath of the Wild is done. There's your motivation.

But honestly, these threads are somewhat pointless. I remember when Sony announced that PSN would be a paid service lots of other folks were disappointed and the same argument was given too; why should I trade up when I have a PS3 with free online and a good library? And when the dust settels you'll see a certain amount of those people buying a PS4 and accepting (be it somewhat reluctant) the new PSN.

System lauches aren't for anyone. If you want the system but don't feel it's worth it, there is always next pricedrop/certain gamereleases/whatever personal reasons and thats the point where you jump in. Done.

OP there really isn't a good reason to buy one at launch in your situation. You can play Zelda on your WiiU and Mario Kart of an enhanced port. All these games that people are suggesting to get a Switch for are way past launch. So the price of the hardware might come down by the time these games are available. I'm buying one because I'm a dumb consumer and want portable Zelda. However if I see anything suggesting the WiiU version is better or close I'm probably out and waiting until Holiday 2017 with Mario.

OP,

I have the same problem. (I even have preorder the switch already) I posses a Wii U and a bunch of games. Like:

-Mario 3d Worlds
-Smash
-Splatoon
-Mario Maker
-Mario Kart 8
-Deus EX
-Bayonneta
-Capitan Toad
-Zelda WW
-Nintendoland
-Mario U

These are what I can remember of the top of my head (all physical copies so I guess no transfer opportunity to switch if there is one...). I have spent a good amount of money on Nintendo games, but the switch has unmotivated me big time. As a person that has invest in their products and I guess you can call me a fan; I feel betrayed by the company. Their high entry points for ports of games that came out like 3 years ago, a bare bones launch of games (not to mention a year), and the prices for all the accessories is just too much, I just feel that they have lost me as a fan that has own all their home consoles. This is asking too much for my loyalty, the breaking point were not the games, but the prices for existing Wii U owners that did invest on their system and provide them with profits (even if they were "little") are not justified.

So no motivation, as soon as I get my switch with zelda is going off to Ebay.

I plan on waiting a little while and when I do pick one up, I will most likely use it as a handheld only. I just have so many games still to play.

The graphics will be a bit better and the system can go portable (with a non included carrying case).

Since I already have Wii U and 3ds and heaps of games for them this isn't that appealing.

I'm in the same boat as you and considering canceling my preorder, I already have splatoon and MK8 on Wii U and the idea of paying Nintendo for a useless online service that's not as good as 2005 Xbox live gold is ridiculous to me.

I'm not going to spend 300 on a gimmicky, overpriced console

Love my Wii U

So confused. I can't understand how you can love the Wii U and easily write off the Nintendo Switch which is a superior product from inception. How fundamentally broken was that GamePad concept.. like seriously.

You admonish the Switch for being an "overprice 300 gimmick console with motion controls" but praise the Wii U for being a more expensive console with double the gimmicks (motion and asymmetric).

As a Wii U (and 3DS) owner, I will just play the games I thougt I would have dropped when the Switch will come out : The Wonderful 101, Yoshi's Wooly World and such.

This + PC games will keep me occupied until the Switch is at a reasonable price.
