As an average gamer, which console do I buy?

I've had a ps4 preorder all year but I cancelled it this week which is something I'd never have guessed I'd do. There isn't much I want to play at launch but I figured I'd want one before the first price drop so might as well get one and have the day 1 experience. Watching stuff like the giant bomb stream though sort of scratched that itch for me. And watching some titanfall footage recently made me think about getting an xbox instead. I would prefer the ps4 for several reasons but that game is the one thing I've seen that I really wouldn't want to go without so I don't know what to do. So I've decided to wait until next year when I can make an more informed decision, see what new stuff gets announced etc.

It sounds like there are no games on either right now that draw you towards a particular console. If so, then like many others have said, just wait.

It's no use sinking your money into a console that you are not sure you really want. You shouldn't let others make that decision for you. Wait until you have games you want to play, then make your decision.

If you can't wait, then use the past to try and predict what the future will bring for each console. Weigh up the decision of whether you want a multi-purpose box, or one with the main focus on gaming and other features more of a side-serving. Consider price, consider your friends. There's a lot of things you have to think about that are specific to you - things which none of us can really help you with (especially with the information you provided).

Why wait. Not like the price is going down anytime soon.

For the ps4 at least.

Because unless you are caught in the hype or a fan of Sony/Microsoft you could make a much more educated decision after the games that you really want are out and after you are sure that there are no serious hardware issues. "For the PS4 at least"
joke-quoting you. Console wars are fun from outside

If you're expecting to walk in to a store and get a new console any time soon, your picture is missing you carrying a gun! Haha

Why pay more for less as an average gamer, I never mentioned graphics.
Gamers can care about plenty of things. The only reason I am buying a ps4 is because I consider myself a hardcore gamer. Price doesn't matter that much to me but I want full 1080p so thats where I went. But I can clearly see that the xbox one has plenty of advantages over the ps4. If the op wants a great entertainment/gaming system that plays good looking, next gen games at lower resolutions than its competitor then the xb1 is the way to go.

If the OP wants a system that puts gaming above all else and has great looking next gen games that run at higher resolutions than its cometitor and is $100 cheaper, then the ps4 is the way to go.

Pretty clean cut.

Yeah I think it's best to wait, I don't think there's really any super compelling software to justify getting something right now. Alternatively you can hope the next South Park episode will reveal the winner of the console war and go with that.

For the long run just get a PS4

How can you possibly say that without the use of a time machine? Nobody knows what the next few years hold.

If you do have a time machine, by the way, can you get me tomorrow's Euromillions numbers please?

Former Xbox guy last 2 gens, I say buy a PS4 it's cheaper and better. If you really are just a casual / average you might get more value out of just buying a Wii U bundle with the Mario + Luigi U games. Buy Zelda Wind Waker and new Mario and you are set for several months and only dropped the cost of a PS4 console by itself. I bought a PS4 last week and still thinking of doing scenario 2 above for myself.

Wii U.

I got one a few weeks ago. The graphics are not OMG wow next gen, but they are solid and the games keep looking better.

I have:
Zelda WW
Rayman Legends
Pikmin 3
W101
Nintendoland (a blast with friends)

Going to get:
SM3DW (tonight)
Monster Hunter
NSMBU
Lego City
ZombieU

Next Year:
Bayonetta 2
Mario Kart
Donkey Kong
X

There are some really fun games in that list and I know i am missing some, but yeah im really looking forward to this and dont doubt my decision for a minute.

X360U for a while for me

I personally go with Xbox myself but not because of dislike for anything else, just my preference.

However, I'd probably recommend you wait until mid to late next year to see how the consoles are evolving and what games they are getting (hopefully E3 brings some big things).

In the meantime if you don't have them, PC and WiiU are great. The WiiU actually has some amazing looking games coming out in the next few months.
Was hoping to get 3D World today but it got delayed a week here.

PS4, cheaper, more powerful and will have the best versions of multiplatform games. People suggesting last gen consoles are telling you to basically throw your money away. They have no more than a year of decent support and then you'll have to have to buy yet another console to continue playing the latest games.

Wii U

As a person who is buying neither the Xbox nor PS4, I honestly have no idea why anyone would choose Xbox over PS4. The choice seems obvious.

To be honest the more I think on it, with Titanfall likely being a huge exclusive (just in the knick of time for COD'ers with COD fatigue), and the additional functionality it has over the PS4 Xbone might surprise us with the casual gamers.

And then again they might just stick with their current gen systems ...

Any console other than a PS4 or Xbone, unless you are drawn to any of the launch titles those are offering.

But I honestly think it's the Wii U's time right now in terms of quality games out.

Wait. The launch offerings are sparse and the launch window games are equally sparse.

Smartest move is to wait until E3 next year. See what each camp is planning for that years' holiday season and make you decision.

Even though I'm getting a PS4 next Friday, you'd have to be nuts to buy either a PS4 or Xbone ahead of a WiiU if you don't already own one.

So yeah, as it stands right now:

WiiU > PS4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Xbone.

Wait. Give it 6 months to see how each console progresses and what games/exclusives are announced. Right now both consoles are fairly weak in the games department plus have/will have launch issues.

not everyone gives a fuck about nintendo exclusives

now I can't be sure, but given that the OP wasn't including the wii u I'd dare to say he doesn't care that much either

on top of that your "average gamer" probably spends most of his playtime with 3rd party "core" games
do people really believe the wii U will be the go to platform for those games at any point?

A handheld or last gen console if you're an average gamer.

However you're posting on NeoGAF so you're not the average gamer.

PS4.

It's too early if your not excited about what's out or in the immediate future. Buy a Vita :-) it has P4G and Tearaway. And Remote Play if you ever get around to that. Or a WiiU. The thing with these other systems, is that they already have games out. And games coming soon.

Not all people are sane as well.

Srry for double post. Will fix when possible

PS4 and Xbox One will have mostly the same games on there.
With PS4, you can get access to those games for 400 dollars, Xbox One will cost you 500 dollars.

Wait it out.

Both the PS4 and XB1 have release only titles, which aren't really worth it... yet.

Either wait, or get a Wii U. It has a few unique titles out but they're all awesome and has some really good 3rd party titles (even if they're not a whole lot) plus a wide ammount of wii games in case you never played those.

You probably wont be able to get a ps4 easily. You can get a WiiU really cheaply on craiglist. I have no idea why you would get an xbox one...

The real answer is wait.

But if you really want a shiny new toy just buy the cheapest one or the one your friends are buying is what I'd say.

Is waiting the new cool? Or are people who are saying to wait didn't buy a console? Because I don't understand it. I can only speak to what I own, the PS4, and its a solid gaming machine where you can play (outside of PC) the best AssCreed to date, the best basketball game to date (NBA 2K14), the best shooters to date (BF4--WHEN IT WORKS and arguably Killzone), the best looking CoD on consoles if you are into that thing, the best NFS to date, the best soccer game to date (FIFA), the best arcade shooter to date (Resogun), and I could go on and on.

If you are gamer, what's not to like about playing the best iteration of that very diverse set of games?
