A sign of things to come ??

"By George! Asda has chopped £50 off both editions of the Wii U console.

A black 32GB Wii U with Nintendo Land now costs £249 on Asda Direct (via MCV). A white 8GB Wii U with no games costs £199.

That's one of the best new Wii U Premium Pack (32GB black Wii U with Nintendo Land) prices on the internet. SimplyGames isn't too far off with £265.

Last week, Zavvi temporarily lowered its Wii U Premium Pack price to £225, although it's now back up to £275.

Asda's Wii U Basic Pack (8GB white Wii U) price of £199 stands out as well. ShopTo is still cheaper, though, at £190.

The Wii U Premium Pack has a guideline RRP of £300, the Basic Pack an RRP of £250.

The Wii U was released in November 2012. If prices are already dropping significantly now, what will they look like this autumn when PS4 and the next Xbox are (probably) released?"

Damn it, competitors copying Nintendo again!

The 3rd year of the Gamecube's life equivalent for next gen.

So $150/$200, while the Durango/PS4 will be $400 and up.

Dear ASDA (and other major UK retailers)

It would actually help if you sold the Wii U console and / or the games in store.

Thanks

Zavvi's sporadic price-drops have been better, £225 for Premium WiiU several times. But clearly no-one is shifting the backed up warehouses of this product without big ol price-cuts.

Wii U was massively overpriced by Nintendo. I don't know what they were thinking.

That they didn't want to take massive losses at launch. If you mean what were they thinking designing a console like the Wii u that couldn't be sold for a profit at a cheaper price than I dont think even Nintendo knows at this point.

Edit: In the UK, what is Nintendo selling these consoles to retailers at?

Not going to lie, if the Wii-U was $75-$100 in America I would pick one up asap.

Premium Wii U at 199 would be a instant buy.

This ghetto tablet is going to sell these consoles, yes-ser-e bob.

Wii U is doing horribly in EU, I wouldn't be surprised if they were just on clearance.

Looking forward to picking up a console dirt cheap when they finally start to release the games I've been waiting for.

Much better price to be honest. Should have launched at that. Now the PS3 bundles are the same price as the premium and even the basic PS3 is more than basic Wii U now (amazon ps3 prices), which is good since Sony is starting to rebrand the PS3 as a family device (and people are broke).

I'm broke too so nothing for me and I'll probably be waiting a while till I see what Nintendo's offering in a bit, I doubt the prices will be going back up by then, I'd hope not anyway.

Nice, give it another 12-18 months of releases and 12-18 months of price drops taking it to £150 or less for a premium and even I might bite.

I went to my local Tesco and they had plenty of both - more than I was expecting to be honest.

My local Tescos - three branches - have fuck-all. A couple of key Wii U titles (NSMBU and Zombi U last time I was in) mixed in among the Wii games, no Wii U hardware for sale and a couple of Wii U Pro Controllers in the Wii accessories stand.

I rarely goto supermarkets, but the few I've been to since the Wii U has been released have had no Wii U related stuff in them, at all, not even one game.

Shame the buzz is long gone for it. And I cannot see it coming back now. Especially in the light of the PS4 reveal.

The Wii U already seems old hat sadly. Saying that when Bayo 2 finally arrives the machine should hopefully be priced appropriately.

I think I've seen one console at my local super market and it was a PS3 on a random shelf.

Yeah, it's amazingly baffling that as overpriced as this thing is, it's supposed to be losing money...like how ill-conceived can a platform be?

I went for that zavvi £225 premium bundle offer last week. Good timing with Monster Hunter coming out soon.

It was the same shortly after the 3DS launch from memory. It went from a pre-launch push with promo stands in the aisles to post-launch with just a handful of 3DS titles mixed in with the DS titles, no dedicated space and a couple of display boxes for the hardware.

It's taken until now for 3DS games to start showing up promptly and in good numbers in my local supermarkets and for proper hardware sections to appear. The DS games are still mixed in, but it feels more like the 3DS is the "lead" now, with the DS just bundled in to save space, whereas in the 6-12 months post-launch it was definitely the other way around.

I sometimes wonder if there has been some souring of relationships with UK retailers - primarily supermarkets - or whether it's just the brutal nature of UK retail at the moment. Certainly I don't think the Woolworths collapse helped Nintendo, who seemed to have a pretty important relationship with that firm.
