Assassin’s Creed Unity - livestream launch event Friday November 7th

So hold on.. Is the PS4 version's framerate bad or not?
Define bad :P
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ksxm5g884BI (make sure to watch this in Chrome!)

I analyzed this video a bit, and came to conclusion that the PS4 version at least seems to suffer a bit from the frame pacing issue. In this 60FPS video, most frames are repeated twice, but there are frames that change in direct succession, but then the next frame is repeated 3 times. So overall, you get 30FPS, but not evenly paced. Those who follow DF articles should be familiar with this. In this game this introduces a tiny bit of jitter, but it's nothing too bad.

What is bad however is when you try to convert this kind of footage into a 30FPS video, like with twitch stream and most other YT videos are. This cannot be done correctly and a lot of the smoothness that exists when you'd be playing the game on the TV would be gone, and additional jitter introduced.

Now watch the video above in Firefox to see what I'm talking about. It looks like jitter city compared to what it looked like in Chrome that played it back at originally encoded 60FPS. This is kind of good news possibly, as it means the game could in person appear a lot smoother than it does on some of the videos around.

Interesting. Going by some of the different PS4 footage I've just watched the frame rate doesn't seem awful like some of the earlier statements made by people based on watching streams. Anyway, if it is a frame pacing issue hopefully Ubisoft will get around to correcting it like Bungie did for Destiny.

Although I must say while I find AC games to be enjoyable I certainly will be waiting for DF to provide an analysis before I consider picking this up.

Well you did say read. *Channels Walter White, throws pizza on roof*

We work so well together....

Which brings up a good point; why is it wrong to judge lighting but not FPS from these streams?

Watching the ign stream now and holy shit this game is janky as fuck. Texture pop in on npcs in crowds makes it look like they are constantly changing in to different characters and npcs are clipping through all kinds of shit or just straight up running into walls or getting stuck on geometry and furniture. I will play through if gamefly ships it to me but no way I will buy it unless there is a massive day 1 patch that fixes that shit.

3 is my favorite. I loved the setting, the frontier, and murdering guys with a tomahawk.

3 > Bro > 2 > 4 > 1 > Rev

I don't understand why Revelations doesn't get half the hate 3 does. Revelations was absolutely terrible.

Revelations had a great ending. That's why it's deemed more favorably than Assassin's Creed 3.

It was far too expensive and time-consuming for Ubisoft to make more than one character, so they use this technique to pretend that there's more than there is.

Damn, man. Opening some wounds for me here. I loved the sands of time trilogy (yeah even the edgy warrior within). I want more... So, Assassin's Creed?

It doesn't make sense to me either my friend lol. I wonder what happened to that team? I know Patrice was creative director on a couple of them... PoP 2008 was a misstep but it had some charm. I think the original game fed into my childhood affinity for the Disney version of Aladdin. I enjoyed the AC games but 3 almost put me off the franchise completely. It felt raw and unfinished... Black Flag brought me back around and Unity is giving me some major AC 2 vibes. Is there room for improvement? Sure. I don't know how buying something you want is "settling" and letting devs "fuck us over". I want this game, if the next game doesn't improve ... I won't buy it. For those who say all the games are the same ... don't buy it and wait til it's the game you want. Or just buy the game you want.

This whole baked GI lighting system they have going on was not worth losing the day/night cycle. I don't understand the decision to go backwards like that. I think it actually really harms the exploration I've seen in these streams (aside from, repeating myself here, the lack of exploration music why Ubisoft why) There's no sense that the world is actually shifting around the player but rather that you're just running around a set, laid out by the devs in a very artificial manner. It would be a real shame if this is what they plan on doing for all future AC titles.

I liked the 2008 PoP some but not nearly as much as the ones before it. Ubi please.

Well said.

For what it's worth you can set the time of day after you complete the game I believe.

A small consolation prize I know.

Mordor and Infamous also have the fixed ToD, and it didn't really bother me to be honest.
In fact, it bothers me more when it's too fast of a cycle.
However it also depends on how frequently they change it up, ideally every mission or activity that can get away with a loading, should advance time forward a bit, to keep it moving and trick your brain.

Of course, the ideal would be a cycle that takes a while, enough to not make you feel like you're living in a time lapse (old ps2-era GTAs had this problem).

This is actually what I'm most sad about. I kind of loved leaving AC games, and returning intermittently to find a beautiful vista at a different time of day/night. And that lack of music while parkour-ing about- gah. I loaded up AC2 to bask in nostalgia, and it's still really comforting to just run about with Kyd's score in the background.

Here's hoping it won't feel too empty without it!

It changes from time to time, after missions. I'm halfway now, and I've seen 'golden hour' with soft, orange light the most atm I guess. The lack of a cycle doesn't really bother me, allthough the transitions from one time to another can be jarring (I had a moment where it went in an instant from cloudy to sunny while walking).

Still under NDA, and don't know how much I can say, but as some said before. Those leaked PS4 pics are truly awfull compared by how the game really looks. It's quite stunning apart from some minor griefances (some pop in and jarring animations in the crowd. I don't know why they don't have the animation anymore where you push the crowd away). I'm pressing share all the fucking time to make screens, especially when I'm on top of buildings and have a great view. Also, some interiours are stunning + resolution looks pretty crisp despite the 900p.

I am a Paris lover though, so every time I recognise something like Place des Vosgues or something like that, I make a screen :P

I might share a few images when the NDA is over coming tuesday

Wait, what? There's literally no day/night cycle? What the shit? This is news to me.

I assumed the baked GI pass that they were so proud of was something that was stored per-time-of-day, and interpolated between as time passed, which would explain the memory footprint, and the reason they seem so happy with it. At least then it would be a bit technically interesting.
There's nothing impressive about baked lighting on its own. Welcome to the nineties.

You're saying we have static lighting in a exclusively current-gen, 900p, sub-30 fps game? Jesus christ.

Looks to be similar to Infamous SS.

It's good to see more and more people start to wake up on this game.

I haven't really paid any attention to it before I opened this topic. And I've been concentrating on the missions, so time of day changes based on that and I can't speak for hours of free roaming if the lightning changes. I had some different times of days and weathers though. I will check today (willplay a couple of hours this afternoon) if it changes apart from missions too.

That said. It may be prebaked, but some vistas are beautifully lit.

Was the no ToD cycle a problem for people with InFamous Second Son or are some of you just literally trying to find more excuses to hate on Ubisoft?

It really bothered me for inFamous- the environment felt flat. And the best was experiencing neon at night, I wanted that continuously. When they released the patch, it definitely felt better but I still didn't love it.

This being the first AC without it actually saddens me. I'm really excited about the game, will definitely be getting it at launch- but shit, the lack of music, day/night cycle, Wanted mode disappearing... These are all things that I felt let down about.

They're trying something new. I hope the story is wonderful, the city is gorgeous, the parity was unsettling- I just want to play it myself.

Ah ok, that's cool then.

I think its a valid complaint after all the AC games post-AC1 having a full time cycle, it just seems like a step backwards and is less technically impressive considering the frame rate and resolution problems.

I disliked it in Infamous and Mordor as well. I've never been a fan of shifting static ToD in open world games. Feels like half of the world simulation is missing. Even worse that they already moved on from this since AC2.

I understand the both of you but it is not like Ubisoft introduced this feature in the first place. Second Son had it. Shadow of Mordor had it. It just seems all of a sudden that when Ubisoft introduces it in their game, people immediately jump on the hate bandwagon.

It's 900p. It's sub-30 fps. And knowing the lighting is all baked (ie. easier on the GPU than anything real-time) those numbers are even stranger.

At most, it looks good, but that's about it.

But we have no idea how much of an effect the NPCs have I'm performance. It's impossible to say whether baked lighting wasnt a performance booster, so why say it?

People are going to be upset with aspects of the game- it's their right. There certainly has been a lot to raise eyebrows at during the horrible marketing of the game, the unflattering "leaked" screens, the awful co-op playthroughs on the Official stream- if anything, it adds more fuel to the fire.

I'm going to miss it. I know I will. I want to experience it, and see how it affects my experience.

The original didn't have day/night cycle either.

Also, you're the first one I hear who's disappointed about the lack of wanded mode. That stuff was just absolute horseshit. Especially in Revelations, where renovating a store would magically add 75% to your notoriety, you were basically tearing down posters non-stop.

I meant the competitive PvP mode, not the tearing down posters bit. That made a return in Liberation, I could live without that any day of the week!

I must be crazy cause I enjoyed tearing down the posters in AC2/ACB. It's another feedback loop that made sense and made it feel like the world was reacting. Sure it could've been improved, but everything can always be improved.

I think in AC2 it felt unique to me, so I was more tolerant- that notoriety could be reflected by interactions within the world, and that there were (even if momentary) consequences. But as the series continued, especially when things went into high alert- it started turning into a game of hide and seek with bribing heralds instead.

Liberation though- to have different notoriety systems for each outfit, that felt excessive to me. I also was incessantly tearing down posters, there was no way I was rolling with 1/4 of that meter full, it never felt right!

I think that the idea of having different notoriety for each outfit was great.
But the way Liberation did it wasn't good. They tried to mix the old notoriety system with the outfit sytem and it didn't work well.
