Assassin's Creed: Black Flag narrative needed before Unity?

I enjoyed the portrayal of templars during AC3/4/R way more than I did during the Ezio trilogy. Modern day story during the Ezio trilogy certainly did have more urgency to it though. And Edward's story is definitely one of my favorites. One of my favorite endings in any game ever.

I thought Edward's story was all over the place. Jumped around and made no sense. Hated the ending to AC4 too.

AC3 kinda dips its toes into a bit of both, because on the present-day side it wraps up the Desmond story but AC3/4/Rogue all have the same set of characters you play as that span I think 2 or 3 generations.

I bought the Assassin's Creed Unity bundle and have never played an Assassin's Creed game. Should I play Black Flag or Unity first? Which is the better starting point?

Black Flag because Unity has probably better graphics and most importantly better gameplay. You'll better understand the narrative too I guess (but it's hard to tell without playing Unity)

I don't think the series is really connected anymore. Once Desmond finished his story that was it.

It is connected both in the past (trilogies and little links) and the present, but the present day story is more of a background cross-media meta-story now, targeted for the fans with the games, ACinitiates, comics and novels (even if they talk about the past). It has been confirmed by Darby McDevitt (he wrote AC4 story) last year and a few days ago about Unity (he wrote some things for the game too). They changed the way to narrate the meta-present day story, it's less noticeable for the random player but it's still here.

I just thought it was mostly over because Desmond dealt with the One from Before.

It was mostly because they realized they didn't need to use lots of ressources ($$$) to create gameplay and assets for the present game, which is basically a second game, when they can do a game at full-scale with a little background for everyone and a lot for the fans. Which doesn't cost much because you don't have much gameplay.
And Desmond didn't really dealt with the Precursors (AC4 spoilers)
Juno is still alive in the fucking Internet and this is her plan to destroy the Humanity...
This is a mess though, and having lots of games in development at the same time with annual releases (and other medias like comics) doesn't help you building a consistent universe with great stories.

Modern day story was shrugged under the rug, because Ubisoft thinks we're stupid or something. To be honest, only Desilets was smart enough to make that work, and without his planned arc and direction they will never resolve what he laided out in 2 and Brotherhood, because thanks to the factory line approach they just can't think long term or plan a satisfying conclusion.

So no, OP, AC story won't be connected soon, not the present one anyway.

You should totally play Black Flag anyway. Its a great game.

The over arching story is a mess and Ubisoft have all but given up at it being a important part of the franchise now though. Its had potential in the early games but they wasted it and its gone nowhere.... or they turned what they had planned into Watch Dogs. Whatever.

Post AC3 its basically just there as a gag and for the developers to making funny meta jokes at themselves.
