Assassins' Creed III: Worst introduction in a game

It's really awful, and it goes on for six hours. It's just garbage. You KNOW he's not the main character, so the entire time you're just waiting for the character change instead of enjoying the game. What a fucking stupid idea.

THANK YOU! This.

Just stop playing, the game is not worth your time. Never keep playing a game in hope 'it gets better'.
I already used some of my UPlay points on an Ezio costume for Connor, there's no turning back!

I like Haytham a lot as a character, but his missions were so simplistic and repetitive. When you are having a QTE fight with wolves, it's time to think about what you want your game to be.

I could only play 3 hours of this game before I gave up. Dreadfully boring. Which is a shame, because I'm a huge fan of history and loved being able to walk around early America. Didn't help either that Ubisoft refuses to get rid of the forced 16.9 lock on PC. Shit pissed me off. But that's a whole different story.

AC3 was just about the most garbagest garbage I've ever played. And I've played Fable 3 and Superman 64.

Yeah after Brotherhood I was burnt out. Tried Revelations but quit halfway through. Decided to give AC3 a chance, and nope. Done with this series. :(

This. Loved Haytham...then the game started proper with Connor and it became a snoozefest.

Yep. That's why I am glad the new guy seems more like Haytham.

Hard for me to comprehend anyone preferring Connor part lol.

I actually kept hoping his parts would go longer. I thought the kid Connor parts were cool, but as soon as you go purely to Connor the game goes down a peg.

To be fair, those QTE fights with wolves WILL happen with Connor as well. It's not Haythem's fault he has to do it, yo.

And yes, the missions with him are simple because they're supposed to be an introduction/tutorial. You're right that tutorial goes on far longer than it should and that needed to be better paced. Once you were in America and had done a few assassination or listening missions that should've been it and Haythem would've had free reign of the world/exploring until you finish all his "story-line" stuff and then gain Connor. Would've done MUCH better for the game in regards of a tutorial for it.

But then again since nothing you collect as Haythem translates to Connor (WHY.jpg This is a game, don't give me a bullshit story related reason for this) it's kinda pointless if they did that.

Final Fantasy XIII begins as a tank with training treads. As the game slowly progresses, treads fall off at intervals until at the very end, all of the treads have been removed and the game is a tiny little tricycle that falls over and breaks.

:lol Probably the best analogy for it.

Yep. That's why I am glad the new guy seems more like Haytham.

Hard for me to comprehend anyone preferring Connor part lol.

Haythem's dad and him being a pirate/ship sailing is because of fan backlash. That's like the ONLY reason Ubisoft is doing it. If Connor was accepted like Ezio I'm sure we'd have seen an "Ezio trilogy" like we did Ezio.

(And I still prefer Ezio over Haythem but Haythem was awesome in a Bond-ish way)

I have some a bit off-topic questions regarding the series.

I played AC 1 and 2, and stopped. I felt that the progress with the story was too slow. I wanted and ending for Desmond and some big explanations.

So have I missed anything? Are there a lot of future parkour assassin stuff because Desmond seemed like the end game character? What was the thing with AC2.5? Any point in playing that at all?

I kind of want to know where the story has gone to but don't want to spend hours grinding through the same kind of missions over and over again.

The story ends with 3. But the story's ending is so rushed/DEM it isn't worth playing for the story, seriously.

Play Brotherhood/Revelations to see the end of Ezio's story and ignore the meta-plot and stop there.

I would rather play as Haytham and be a Templar, the Assassins are so lame, I was hoping they would turn it around and make the Assassins the bad guys.

Ooo...forgot about Dreamtown McSleeperton.

Yeah, KH2 is worse than ACIII in this regard.

AC3 had a slow paced intro followed by a reset into another intro which lasted the same amount of time as the previous intro. How is KH2 worse?

It's awful, and made worse by the obnoxious way they handle that terrible twist.

I mean, the game literally pauses for effect, AND THEN AN ACHIEVEMENT POPS UP CALLED "HOW D'YA LIKE THEM APPLES?".

What a load of utterly pretentious drivel.

I have no idea how good the actual game is, because once I got to that point I stopped playing. I really wish they'd put less emphasis on their shitty story in these games. Or at least cut out the "Follow this guy whilst he talks for ten minutes" sections and make cutscenes skippable.

Seriously, I shouldn't have to spend four hours on an intro.

All it needed was a record scratch over the sudden "Wait, what?" to be the perfect awful moment.

As others have said, Haytham is waaay better than Connor, but I personally couldn't really get attached to him. I kept expecting him to be killed off at one point during the 4 hour tutorial and when he didn't, I started to wonder if they had pulled an MGS2 on us. Good god, who decided it was a good idea to make the opening segment(s) that long!? Why did they bother showing us Haytham on the boat? What did that accomplish in the overall story? Why was the rope dart so useless? Why does Connor
shave his hair
at the end? Why is Connor so angry all the time? Why are there no core mechanics in this game!?

Spoilers for the rest of the series (so far):

Brotherhood:
Desmond and his friends go on a quest around the world to find traces of the First Civilization (the beings you saw at the end of 2). At the end of Brotherhood (which follows the further adventures of Ezio, it's actually pretty good) one of these beings, Juno, has Desmond kill Lucy for seemingly no reason.

Revelations:
After killing Lucy Desmond falls into a trauma-induced coma and is plugged against his will into the Animus, where he meets what's left of subject 16's consciousness. Remember him, and all the clues he gave you during 2 and Brotherhood? Well, he's not even going to mention them now you've met him face to face. He'll talk to you like a normal person now but won't give you any clarification on his previous hints. Being connected to the Animus allows Desmond to see some more of Ezio's life in Constantinople (and some of Altaïr's through some memories-within-a-memory plot device) and he wakes up from his coma.

Oh, did you want to know what happened to Lucy? Buy some shitty DLC! Yeah, it's not even explained in the main game.

3:
Desmond gets ready to save the world, but he needs a key to enter the temple of the First Civ, so we get to see some more of his ancestors, namely Haytham Kenway and his uninsteresting son Connor. A lot of stupid shit happens. Desmond ultimately gets the info he needs, kills every single one of his enemies in the modern day in the more anticlimatic duel ever and saves the world by touching a magical glowing ball of light as instructed by Juno, and dies. Juno says "thank you Desmond, now it's my turn to rule the world" while she walks over Desmond's dead body. ROLL CREDITS.

I liked Haytham's part, but felt that it actively made the rest of the game much worse. Mainly because Haytham is a much better character than Connor. But also 'cause we know, from the very start, that he is not the main character. So we're just waiting for the character change. It's distracting.

I was hoping they'd pull a MGS2 on us, but of course they don't. Then Connor has to be properly presented, which means we have to endure another long introduction.

Ah, Assassin's Creed III. Didn't that have a five hour tutorial. Holy shit does it take long before you are given any options.

'Twas a AAA disaster. The opening was the most interesting part about it, and heck, they stole that shit*.

*From the iPhone TinTin game, published by Ubisoft. The console version was developed in-house, and they would have gotten updates about the iPhone version. They clearly took note, and kept it for ACIII.

The beginning is garbage. I stopped playing about 4 hours in because I couldn't take the tutorial for one minute longer. I have other games to play and won't be wasting my time on this IP any longer, which is a shame, because I legitimately enjoyed the previous games.

What a mess. I agree with every point the OP made, including the little twist, which i rather enjoyed. I was about to quit before that twist, but it was interesting, so I stuck around, got punished with those stupid hunting missions and hide and seek, then quit for good.

Hmmm, thanks. I wasn't that invested in Ezio's story to begin with so I guess I read the ending online from a Wiki and move on. Pirate era AC does seem inviting at least as a love me some Arrrr, eye patches and parrots.

Wasn't FFXIII's tutorial 90% of the game?

Just because you couldn't change party members 100% before chapter 9 or so doesn't mean that everything before it was a "tutorial". I never understood this one because there was lots of challenge to be had during the so-called tutorial, and it's not like there was an overabundance of tutorial screens popping up telling you how to play either. Maybe Chapter 1 &2 were piss easy, but the game during much of the earlier half still has more challenge than a lot of the Final Fantasy series imo. Sorry, but strict linearity and lack of changing your party/leader doesn't equate to a tutorial in my eyes.

I actually liked the intro more than rest of the game, at least the character and plot looked interesting then. After that it was utterly mediocre.

Dafuk, are we playing the same game here? I'm halfway through this game. I admit the intro section is quite long winded, but it's a refreshing change to other AC games. Haytham is a good character and the part
where he's revealed to be a Templar
was interesting. Conor is a little immature, but thats what they intended with his character anyway. I admit he isn't as good a character as Altair or Ezio, but still a good design.

In terms of gameplay and animation this is the best of the series. Stellar game. Perhaps it was the slower pacing that put some of you off?

I have to agree with you fellow GAFfer.

Played many games but this is getting hard to keep going. I just started this game last week, already did that part and now I'm playing as the (early mid-spoilers)
kid, playing hide-and-seek
. I need to know if the game gets better from this point.

If not, does any kind fellow GAFfer can share the average of play time if I just focus on the Main Story until the end and nothing else?

It's funny because whether you really liked or really hated the Haytham part, the rest of the game is still even worse.

Crap game. AC2 and Brotherhood are the high point of the series. I hope they put it on ice after Black Flag.

Must admit it is true, first 5 hours are slow, and the next 5 hours (without side missions - waiting until the end to do those) are a mixed bag, some awful and great missions combined. I bought it for Wii U, the game looks beautiful. I think I managed to play through it because it is my first AC game, so despite the slow start I really liked the whole package and universe. I am in sequence 10 and looking back I think I give the game a solid 8.

Pros
Game World - Side things to do are plenty
Combat is very satisfying
Graphics: very good work on the world and some missions are amazing
Naval Battles: ohh the Caribbean

Cons
Story at this time I would give it a 7, not the strength of the game
Some very boring missions: 1/3 of the main missions are boring, specially the start
Did not like Connor

The Opening was great. it put you really good in the story, was interesting and the characters are well written. Some poeple just want action all over the place and get tired when a story needs to unfold...

I say it right here: AC III is fantastic, even with it many little flaws.

Boy do I have some massive grievances with Ass Creed Triple fuckery, the pacing for this game is just completely wrong. Never mind the tutorial that makes up 30% of the game, the actual mission pacing IS FUCKING DREADFUL. Unlike other Assassin's Creed games where you naturally progress and get new weapons and stuff in AC3 you find yourself realizing you're about to finish the game and you only obtained one "upgrade" and it was from the store you accidentally walked into when trying to do an objective. You don't gain upgrades through the story you gain them through side missions and manor missions. The only problem with this is that the main missions are paced as so you have to keep going and going and going and going till you're done. There are no breaks in the game for you to go do your own things it's just a mess of time skips and things happening instantly after other things end. Never mind how utterly embarrassing the ending was, people who bitch about ME3's ending clearly don't understand how truly awful endings can be, because at least that ending was properly paced and tried to make things come full circle (it's still a mediocre ending) but AC3's ending LITERALLY ENDS, the ending cutscene of the game is something like 10 minutes long? It just ends and you roll to credits. There was nothing to it, you were just left questions, but they weren't though provoking questions they were questions because the ending essentially created a billion plot holes that are rather obvious.

It's a huge fucking game because this game actually has rather fun and exciting side missions to do, all the good portions of the game are hidden away in the bonus content like naval warfare and secret side quests and manor quests BUT YOU WILL NEVER DO THIS WHILE PLAYING THROUGH THE MAIN GAME! There are elements that you're not even encouraged to do while playing the main game that are part of the game itself like exploring cities and using the under ground passageway. I never did any of those will long after the credits rolled. I put 40 hours into this mess (only 16 for the main story) but only out of spite, I wanted to quit right after the credits rolled but I was not about to let myself be robbed of any content in this game, especially after the main quest had failed to deliver so I had to go out there and hunt my own fun down. That is the essence of shit design and shit pacing and Assassin's Creed III should be the poster boy of how to fuck up a game completely and still manage to convince people that it's good.

Also some how they broke the engine because the draw distance is made of dicks now.

The only good part of AC3 was the Haytham section at the start. Story was way more interesting in that section than the rest of the game.

In terms of gameplay and animation this is the best of the series. Stellar game.

What? No.

-No more free running button. Now it's either walk or run.
-Combat is more automated than ever, and that's something.
-Horses are useless. After nailing them in Brotherhood we get horses that get stuck on every single thing in the terrain.
-Assassination contracts that are just "go and stab this guy walking in the street minding his own business."
-Two or three optional objectives per mission, which most of the times you will fail before you could even see what they were.
-Bugged posters you can't rip from the walls.
-Enemies that will rush to fight you from the other side of the city, even if you're anonymous.

Shit, I could go on, I'm barely scratching the surface.

Are you kidding me? I'd never played an AC game and seeing the whole sequence at the opera house sold me on the series right away. I was just showing that to some friends last weekend and they were blown away. That and the pirate ships and the old tyme war scenes are like the best parts of the game.

The game design is horrific, the missions are boring and redundant, and the game overall is about as exciting as watching moss grow on a log. This coming from someone who also thought "GAF" was just hating on it for no reason.

But it really is a bad game. It's not fun and the gameplay is broke as fuck. It really is a case of it taking a while to understand how bad it is; I've enjoyed bits of it and was generally liking it for the first few hours (despite also being kinda boring in hindsight) but later when you're in the thick of the game and you're having to do missions involving terrible game design and even worse AI, it shows its true colors.

For example, at a fort on the edge of a cliff, I carefully dispatched of a few guards and planned out how I would infiltrate my way, which is the whole draw of the game design, yet two enemies would keep respawning after a certain point and I'd be alerted. Much of the game has had bugs like this, at least in my experience, that completely ruins the immersion and it makes you just want to quit because you feel like no matter how good you do, some shitty bug will arise or just some bad programming or design flaw will ruin it.

AC3 is why I'm really wary toward Ubisoft now. These fuckers are the masters at making their boring ass games look exciting in trailers and trade show demos.
