Atelier Firis - first screenshots/artwork

Something about these games never spoke to me but I always hear that the systems are good and I actually don't mind the visuals, actually I think what they show here looks good.

We had a thread recently about games you won't play because you won't play them.
This game seems to be that for me.
Maybe I should change that and give it a try when this releases.

I think I will for this, tbh.

Are there any Ateliers out on PS4 already?

I don't get it, at what number the series are with this one? Is it really possible that they can do such amazing looking models but still don't understand that the eyes look dead? They just have to do a dark pupil, look at the difference with what i did in less than a minute.

Or am i the only one to find those eyes dead?

They both look dead and lifeless

Beautiful artwork and really dig the graphical style used. Will most def be looking forward to this!

I don't think that's the fault of the 3D modelers and they're just being faithful to the character artist's design.

Escha has dark pupil, yar?

I'm so far behind in Atelier games that I don't think I'll ever catch up. I haven't played one since Mana Khemia, but I've bought them all.

Please KT, get a good localization job done this time. Shallie and Eschatology have been very rough. Actill hasn't been as good as NISA on this front as yet. I hope they seriously improve if they continue to be the ones localizing the games.

Will check out Sophie when it releases. Really looking forward to Firis now. That art with the birds looks gorgeous!

Sounds interesting. First year will have a time limit, it seems.

Hope the Premium Box theme is that gorgeous art in the op with music. Also, the site opens tomorrow. Hope there's a music a sample. Gimme the goods, Gust sound team. :D

Oh what, really? That's disappointing. Would you mind giving some examples?

For all the praise the visuals get, folks are praising the wrong people. Since Totori, FLIGHT UNIT has been doing the legwork for GUST, from Atelier, to Ar nosurge, and Nights of Azure.

Also, on all of the Tales hate, FLIGHT UNIT has been helping out since Zestiria. (actually might be since Xillia)

I'm continually flabbergasted by how beautiful the in-game character models look.

Atelier Shallie's my first foray into the series. I really like it, but I really wish the characters had more weight to them, especially their battle animations.

This is true, but I think Gust is actually a really small outfit if I remember correctly, so the same could be said for most parts of the game. A lot of their work gets outsourced.

They list some of the more problematic examples there. And the dialogue seems too, umm, literal?

Here's a scene from Shallie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wd1Pu3_e9n4#t=20m55s

It's serviceable, but the character reactions with "what!" and other lines sound awkward and dry to me in English. Serviceable, but I want better.

And for the NA launch, Shallie had a glitch (from localization) that made it impossible to use a feature that upgrades your characters abilities and skills. They fixed it with a patch a week or two after.

Edit: Lol, just noticed something when rewatching that vid. At 22:55, Lotte says "Hey! Look what I found!" I think she meant to say that she found it first.

This is the second time this was asked in the thread so I feel I really have to answer. You don't need to change engines to add depth of field or perform minor tweaks to your rendering. Seriously, I don't see a massive technical difference between these shots and what they have been doing since Totori. It's a continuous incremental evolution.

Its not just rendering, its the way the assets look in general, the rocks and the colors...they lack that rough 'non programmable shader; look that has been carried over from 6th gen in most previous Atelier games...everything looks properly shaded and lit by the rest of the environment....

Thank you.

Yar, these are pretty awkward. Not a deal-breaker, but took me aback after playing some JRPGs with good localization lately.

The environments are shockingly good by GUST standard
Models are amazing as expected
And is that costume change or customized gear I see

Environments look a lot better this time. That's usually where Gust games have some shortcomings.

Character designs are better than Sophie's too, I think.

Ditto. I always see these, and never give them a second thought. But for such a long-running series, I feel like I should try it

Screenshots looks super comfy. I'm rather keen on Atelier Sophie. Will be a change of pace from Stellaris for me.

Probably alternating Sophie, Stellaris and Blood and Wine. Need more hours to be awake on weekends.

I'm not really a fan of her outfit. It looks like she cut up five or six different outfits and sewed the pieces together, not worrying about whether they went together or not.

The boots and stockings are super silly to me. I don't know if they will grow on me but for now I think her design is a step down from Sophie's.

Which games has Actill done, The Dusk trilogy?
I want to start playing Atelier with Dusk but I'm scared because I'm not sure if it's as bad as people make it out to be.

If you mean localization wise, I didn't find the localization to be any worse than NIS. Both were different flavors with their pros and cons so it just depends on how you like your translations. Though NIS changing a character's name to STD will forever put them below Actill.

If you mean game wise that is a different story. Dusk has stronger art direction and world building to me with a revamped crafting system that allows for some interesting combinations but overall the games are a lot easier. Arland has great crafting and the time limits make the game more difficult but more fun in my opinion. Both have fantastic soundtracks. Really, just jump into either depending on which series grabs your attention the most.
