lol I've seen it compared to the ending of Game of Thrones. I see the phrase "character assassination" being thrown around all the time.
I can watch it whenever I want but not gonna invest my time in something that has a disappointing ending, especially if it started losing me midway.

It's really nowhere near that level, and even then, the dip is very late towards the finale, unlike GoT with it's slow multi season degrade.
There's still a fuck load of awesome and brilliant moments, especially in season 3.

Yeah, it's not on GoT's level, it's worse. Call it gradual all you like (which is true), but if the destination is a pool of shit, does it really matter if I gently slide towards it or if I just get dropped in it at terminal velocity ? I'm still in a pool of shit at the end. It's just that with AoT there's vomit and piss in there too. If anything the gentle slide at least gives me ample time and indication to prepare myself for it, rather than the shock of the sudden drop.
That being said, I will still agree and recommend someone that hasn't experienced AoT to see it through, with the ending caveat, it does have some high highs indeed.

I'm not talking about AoT here (and I liked it 100%) but with most stories with bad endings - story is great for 90% and only last 10% are shit.
With GoT we got ~65% of 10/10 content and then it went straight to 7/10 (S6) -> less than 5/10 with S7 and S8.

But it affects the whole thing, anime watchers/manga readers still had way more fun and satisfaction with AoT (even if they didn't like the ending) than GoT fans.
Final episodes are rated like that:

Again though, what is your point in relation to what I was saying ? Which is: When discussing the ending and only the ending, if they're both 1/10 (random number they're not both 1/10 for me) why does it matter what the rest of the show was like ? They both have a terrible ending. My enjoyment of the rest of the show (which I acknowledged myself) is irrelevant in that discussion. Ultimately I still fell in a pool of shit, as I was saying, regardless of how much fun I had on the way down.

To me it really didn't destroy enjoyment, and I can even be merciful to shows/movies/anime that have 90% 10/10 content and 10% 1/10 endings. I had a blast with them vast majority of the time.
AoT is one of the best animes of 20xx. And remember, that ending was invented by the author in 2009 and story sticks to it.

Okay. One can offer critique to a single episode, the show as a whole or just the ending without looking at the whole thing. That's it and all I'm saying. The moment you start talking about your enjoyment of the rest of the show you're missing the point I was making. Not only that, but you're letting your enjoyment of the rest of the show color how you feel about the ending, which is questionable if you want to analyse something but whatever, that's a different matter altogether.
As for your enjoyment of the ending, that's your prerogative of course, people like what they like and people can like bad things. I like the movie Battleship for example, must've rewatched that shit like 20 times, but I know it's bad lol. I do take issue when someone calls an objectively bad thing good though, not sure if you're doing that, since you've only said that you like the ending, not that it's objectively good. Regardless of that, I'm not going to debate the show's/ending's quality here. I've only went through with this reply chain because you're misunderstanding what I was saying.

Yeah, he (the author) told us as much that the ending had changed because it would be too cruel to the fans (implying fan favorites would die) many years ago, after Season 1 turned the IP into a smash hit, and long before Season 2 came out. He could also be found saying that he didn't like childhood romances when people were asking about Eren X Mikasa years ago.
My speculation was that Historia was meant to be the mother of Eren's child, and play a significant role as the "worst girl in the world" for the last couple of arcs of the series, but she was sorta written out of the main story after the time skip. Mikasa and Eren's connection felt forced in at the end to appease fans. Eren was suppose to succeed with the Rumbling and perhaps die himself in the effort to reset the world, so to speak. All the main characters were going to lose their lives, except maybe Historia. But that's just guesses. There is a lot of interesting thoughts online/YouTube from various people, which vary from those that think the ending was meant to be a twisted take of the biblical End Times, where to save the world, Eren had to end it. Other's think Eren originally fell in love with Historia, and the effort was to save her and the future of Eldia. And then those who just believe he was originally meant to become an empty psychopath. I think most agree though that big changes were made, obviously to appease fans and close the story without destroying the hearts of Mikasa and Levi fans, and even with Sasha (who was meant to perish back in Season 2) was given much more love, depth, and respect after her reimagined lost after the time-skip, which was a big part of the development of those two kids in the story whose names I can't remember.
Naturally stories evolve and change over the course of development/writing. But I think Iseyama is basically saying that he ran away from his full commitment and set-up of a character who was going to do the 'thing' (end the world) with no apology, but the author grew cold feet and dialed it back to make Eren a crazed, but sympathetic sacrificial hero. Iseyama probably still believed somewhere inside him that the story was meant to go full course with the tragic event, and therefore the writing carried insincerity with its execution of the events that would play out in the finished work of the anime/manga.
