Oh, this too. Hm, yes this is actually a bigger problem.

Where is the Oscars for video games? Or the Pulitzer prize? Or the Peabody award?

All I can think of is BAFTAs. The VGAs are worse than the MTV movie awards :/

I guess the compromise (should such a thing even be necessary!) is business casual or something. Seems good enough for the Presidents and CEOs for press conferences if I'm remembering correctly (but not Reggie).

Cardboard, electronics, and carpet mostly. It's not as tightly packed as something like PAX so the BO isn't a big deal, but it gets pretty hot with all those lights, and walking the floor for hours on end while lugging around a laptop leaves you pretty burned out by the end. I wouldn't put a suit on after E3 without a good shower first.

You've never been to E3 have you. The PResidents and CEOs aren't going all over the show floor. They're staying comfy in the back of their booth in private areas meeting with people in air conditioned rooms with food and drinks all over the place. It's not the same as someone traversing between two large halls.
 
The guy in a studio on cable TV all day is dressing nicer than an editor of a website who is running around to demo meetings all day in between doing write ups? I would have never guessed.
 
At events like this, game journalists should focus on being better journalists... interviewing skills, being comfortable in front of the camera, asking the right questions, building good rapport with their interviewees.
 
Suits can be pretty comfortable. The coat might be unnecessary when it gets steamy but, slacks are fucking baller!

Step your game up, journalists.

Every time I wear anything even resembling professional I feel like an absolute asshole. Maybe if I was ironically wearing a suit I would wear one for something I guess? I would never work in any industry where I would have to wear a suit on a regular basis.

LOL, that is the first thing that popped into my head. We are dealing with video games here, folks. I swear, if some of you had your way there would be no fun left. I can just see a showroom floor full of games being played, critiqued and over-analyzed by a bunch of snobs in suits.

Buzz off, mate. I'm not on-camera, and even if I were, feel free to stop the video when you care more about the dress style of the man/woman than the passionate creator or creation they're trying to highlight.

Ok, just so you know, my intent wasn't to like insult you guys or something. I didn't really think about you all having to walk around on the show floor for hours on end. I'm just saying, I see tons of people just wearing t-shirts or whatever, and most reporters I see don't, so why don't more people dress up.

I did not think logistically or about being on-camera.

I disagree with the suit... but how about not looking like you just rolled out of bed? I dress up better to walk to the corner store for cigarettes at 7am.
 
Suits would be impractical in such an environment, I would have thought. A bit better dress would not be objectionable, though.

(a) interviewing a game developer
(b) speaking at a round table
(c) attending a conference
(d) playing a game at a booth on film

As for the suit thing not necessary unless you're constantly on tv (like Geoff and Sessler was the same so i could see that as a habit) but at least they carry themselves good enough and not like you just woke up in the morning.

Aside from the last one and if the first one is just a written interview instead of a video interview, why not wear a suit?

I hadn't really considered how hot and smelly it would get at giant conferences though, so practically, a suit is impractical. So sorry if some people who were at E3 got annoyed at that. But if you're attending a professional conference or a round table, why not wear a suit? Assuming it's not the size of E3.

Or at least dress "up". I'm not saying full out jacket, trouser, tie, but not anime t-shirt and cargo pants.

I'm exaggerating a little bit, but you know what I mean

Because it's not the culture of the industry. Look at all the developers. You'll see most of them in jeans and a t-shirt at the show. The game industry is pretty relaxed about these things because that's the current culture climate. This is even in a more mature state of what it used to be. Personally, one of the best perks of working in it is the fact that I wore shorts, and a t-shirt to work today.
 
This is a creative industry convention, not the electoral races.

I was once interviewed for a game company position by a guy with pink hair.

Most linen suits are light weight and easy for all 4

It's not like there's anything in between a cheeto stained persona 3 tshirt with cargo shorts and sandshoes and a $10000 woollen 3 piece suit. No, impossible.

Do you identify with celebrities/rich people who dress like bums because they feel guilty for having money?
 
Layer a sport coat on top of a relatively subtle game t-shirt. Wear nice jeans and black/brown shoes (black socks, of course). Comb your hair, have good posture and you're already looking better than 95% of E3 attendees!
 
I agree professionals should dress professionally, but in a gaming convention you'd die of heat stroke. Theres just too many bodies in too small a space with far too many electronic devices on. You'd roast alive.

You can do the business casual of a colored thin short sleeve and an open collarless overshirt, but really that overshirt would be murder unto itself. The best you can do is have a t-shirt printed with your studio on it and at best get it made in polos. Otherwise, its casual friday at the office otherwise you'll start a ruckus for being the stinky sweaty exec no one wants to talk to. Its all about approachability when at the convention on the floor.
