More precisely it's...

USA: 185,679
USA/JP: 501,145

... with Nintendo publishing in Europe and continued US sales, Symphonia GC should match ToD2J in the end. :)

that would be cool.. let's hope we see the rumored Legendia soon

.........................

GC is not doing too good in US.. but at least they will have there best Holiday season ever in Japan (RE4, Mario Tennis, Naruto3, Super Robot Wars, MP6)

Soul4ger... They could do both couldn't they? I don't think they're doing anything wrong with relying on their established franchises, they just need a few new ones to attract a wider audience. And at the same time they aren't tapping into Pokémon enough with the Gamecube. It's half passed one here, maybe my arguements are getting fuzzy?

Right, like they don't get panned enough for the Pokémon games they do release. "OMG MILK!" As I alluded to, though perhaps didn't say, they're in a position right now where they can't do anything right.

Mario, Zelda, DK & Pokemon are still a pretty strong brands... I think Nintendo could do just as well with a DKC style revival as with something entirely new... Zelda looks like it might fit the bill but I'm worried it might get ignored with the next gen hype ready to wind up. :/

I guess it's out of the picture that the next Zelda could get a summer 2005 release and avoid the next gen hype?

It definitely won't get ignored, but is has no chance of producing the kind of hype that OoT did.

mainly because OoT was the first Zelda in 3D, and the first console Zelda since lttp :)

I don't particulary think they should change their internal publishing much at all, except to speed it up. They're still the best 1st party in terms of quality and their franchises are still gold.

What they need is true 3rd party support. I don't think it's an accident that 3rd parties jumped ship for Sony back in 94 and haven't come back. The time for mending fences is long past and they need to work out arrangements with publishers for equal support and the occasional exclusive. They tried with Capcom, but you need more than one publisher and this generation had already been decided.

I know. There are things to consider. But the argument could be made that this is the first true "mature" Zelda, or at least the first one since MM/OoT, which puts it at five years. Which is just as long as the gap between ALttP-OoT. The hype just isn't going to be as big, and that's the general trend with Nintendo franchise games.

No worries, easy mistake to make - it was actually released in August, but it missed the August NPD (go figure).

Guh, Pokemon's out in September, along with Fable, Burnout and Def Jam? Going to be a big month.

Yes but you have to consider that even though Zelda:WW didn't sell nearly as much as OoT it passed 3 million worldwide back in March 2004.

Zelda is still huge.

Here are the top 20 from last Sept:
---------------------------------------------
Code:
Format	Title	Sept 2003
PS2	MADDEN NFL 2004	469,977
GBA	FINAL FANTASY TACTICS	203,088
PS2	TIGER WOODS PGA 2004	178,547
PS2	SOUL CALIBUR II	164,325
GCN	SOUL CALIBUR II	138,902
PS2	GRAND THEFT AUTO:VICE	114,894
XBX	SOUL CALIBUR II	111,061
XBX	ESPN NFL FOOTBALL	108,512
XBX	MADDEN NFL 2004	105,499
PS2	SOCOM W/O HEADSET	99,090
GBA	POKEMON PINBALL: R&S	97,984
XBX	WWE RAW 2: RUTHLESS	97,045
PS2	NASCAR THUNDER 2004	87,316
PS2	ESPN NFL FOOTBALL	86,078
PS2	NCAA FOOTBALL 2004	84,922
GCN	WWE WRESTLEMANIA XIX	77,391
PS2	GRAND THEFT AUTO 3	68,517
XBX	TIGER WOODS PGA 2004	66,125
PS2	TONY HAWKS PRO SKATR4	60,599
PS2	NHL 2004	56,873

In addition to the games you listed, Tiger Woods for Xbox (as well as PS2) should make it. The two pokemon games.

Possibles:
------------------
???

Won't Make It:
------------------
Kingdom Under Fire (too unknown)
Gradius (most retro's don't have a shot)
Sly Cooper (loved by many, but 100k is a lot to sell and the first one needed GH to really make it)
Star Ocean

Given Madden & ESPN's numbers Xbox vs PS2, what will probably be the most interesting numbers are again those games and how the Xbox vs PS2 versions fare as well as PS2 vs Xbox Burnout 3. In the UK ,where Sony has an even bigger advantage than here in the US, the first week's breakdown was 43% vs 57%.

Actually I disagree... Mario Sunshine and The Wind Waker were both hurt by being rushed out the door imo. Nintendo's new mantra of "smaller simpler games faster" has sort of blown up in their faces, they'd be better off with the delayed blockbusters of the N64 era.

Agreed to an extent but Japanese firms were actually on board pretty early and seemingly wanted Nintendo to succeed... cartridge overhead was the main reason 3rd parties avoided N64, Nintendo just needs to work on a viable game buying market and the 3rd parties will follow (though they should definitely cut deals to get the big boys on board early).

Not disagreeing with you at all. Just saying the games don't have the impact they did. Nintendo games sell well, I never said otherwise, better than a majority, but the market for them is shrinking. And while the third-parties continue to migrate away from the GC, that spells nothing but d00m.

DBZ Buu's Fury (GBA) also. Astro Boy deserves to but it'll never happen. :(

Nintendo is making the new Zelda GCN in a 2 year span again. It will be interesting how it will come out quality wise.

They already have the engine built for it so they don't need nearly as much time as before.

Well, Majora's Mask was done in 1.5 years and it's the best Zelda evar!! I guess we'll see...

Pikmin 2's jump in quality and scope is a good sign though imo. EAD's had a rocky generation...

And which third parties are moving away from the Cube?

Sega, for one, apparently. I'd say Capcom has trimmed back its support as well, and Burnout 3 definitely didn't turn up on the GC. Of course, you have the usual suspects that mean very little (Acclaim, Eidos, Midway, etc.). And then other companies are satisfied with releasing some of their games four to six after other versions, when no one cares (UbiSoft).

Man, the PS2 shortage must be pretty bad. I wonder if we'll see a bounce to 500k next month from pent up demand.

Football is still just growing in general. EA has finally decided to do its own fantasy league. I personally think it's because every year there is a perception each team in the league has a chance at making the playoffs, and that keeps fans with the poorer franchises much more interested.

I agree with you on sega and ea, but I fail to see that Capcom has trimmed back its support.

RE4 is a big one, but they got trapped on that way back when. If they had to do things now, do you think it would be a GC-exclusive, even if it does end up just being timed? The two Mega Man games, and VJ2, are brilliant, actually, but beyond that, there's nothing, and neither of those are exclusive. And the one is worse/not as good on the GC. Of course, Capcom is pretty much abandoning Xbox, too, but the support and excitement aren't there like they once were.

I can't speak for anybody else (especially mainstream consumers...although I guess I have so-called "mainstream tastes" to an extent), but here's why I personally don't buy into Nintendo's stuff much, anymore: too many long-running franchises.

I know some people will cry bloody murder, but I don't really care about most of Nintendo's games because most of them have Mario and other Nintendo-branded characters in them. That alone turns me off from them. I guess if I were a Mario fan, I'd be in Heaven with Nintendo's systems, but I'm not. I do like Metroid, but that's more of a fluke because I wasn't introduced to that as early as I was Mario, Zelda, etc.

I don't like that 1.) these franchises are old and stale, and 2.) that there are SO many of them. Is it good for Nintendo that these franchises have lasted so long? I guess so. But that doesn't really help me.

Nintendo has become so predictable. Before GameCube was released, I knew basically 80% of Nintendo's line-up before it was ever announced. New Mario? New Zelda? New F-Zero? New Donkey Kong? New Pokemon? New Metroid? New Smash Bros.?

Sega, for one, apparently. I'd say Capcom has trimmed back its support as well, and Burnout 3 definitely didn't turn up on the GC. Of course, you have the usual suspects that mean very little (Acclaim, Eidos, Midway, etc.). And then other companies are satisfied with releasing some of their games four to six after other versions, when no one cares (UbiSoft).

So basically your answer is nobody that you can put your finger on that has said that they are cutting support except the Acclaim, Eidos, Midway trio.

Sega has cut back on Xbox support APPARENTLY. I haven't seen titles like Shenmue II, JSRF, TJ&E3, PDO, etc support from Sega lately so they *must* be turning away from the Xbox....

Capcom has just released their Cube games on the PS2 as well. That's not really cutting back support. That would be exclusive support they are cutting but they are still supporting them. Its not like you see a lot of Capcom games appearing on the Xbox....

Burnout 3 that's 1 title from EA and its centered on online. I'd suspect you will see more online titles not appear on the Cube or this is just one of those freak things not on the system like Def Jam not appearing on the Xbox but the sequel will.

Acclaim is out of business so they won't be supporting anybody.....Eidos will probably follow....and Midway said they were stopping support yet they are releasing at least 2 titles that were announced for the Cube. So who knows with them.

Saying 3rd parties are dropping support on the Cube is so 2002.

GCN NINTENDO

SUPER SMASH BRO MELEE $1,151,505 38,328

amazing how these monsters still sell after launch. No matter what you guys say about xbox sales numbers - non big titles on the box just don't even move anything (see GBTG); I don't see that installed base reflected in the sales of the game numbers. I reckon everyone's chipping the box to death and copying the games to the harddrive.

sequelitis on all consoles will make all brand names old.

Paper Mario/Prime and the New Zelda will all garner heaps of adoration and love and for good reason. And ey, Donkey Kong is not in a Dong Kong type of game.

And yeah, you don't care. I can live with that. I personally didn't pick up Mario Golf/Party/Kart... the offshot genres don't interest me that much. Nintendo does their classic titles very well and the gameplay experience is class. You read like someone who is unwilling to play great games because of characters. That's not Nintendo's problem.

Um. Xbox Halo 2. RSC 2. Amped 2. All consoles have sequels

And PS2. I don't even want to go there.

What's your beef again? I see Nintendo.

See, you're wrong. I didn't say Japanese companies WEREN'T dropping Xbox support. Just that there was a push for people to make GameCube games for a while, and now it's completely fallen off. There was a lot of talk about Nintendo properties being farmed out to third-parties, and while F-Zero showed up, where are the other ones from Sega and Capcom? There were rumors about them, and even hints by the developers themselves. Do you see companies announcing five or six GameCube exclusive releases in a single night anymore? Saying "For the Future! For GameCube!" I don't. I don't doubt that GC third-party support will continue to trickle out, but I doubt it'll be anywhere near as exciting as it used to be. I could be wrong, part of that could just be that developers are starting to focus on the next-generation of systems. But I highly, highly doubt that.

Namco, however, continues to support the GC strongly. At least, they were/will be in North America (with Star Fox, Donkey Konga, Baten Kaitos, and Tales of Symphonia just dropping).

Look for price drops for Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and The Wind Waker this holiday season. Custom Robo's been selling at a surprisingly reasonably good clip after its debut of 50,000 in its first month.

I had no idea it was NPD day again. My comments were already said on the first page by other people, so I have no need to repeat them here.

Thanks, but I can't do it without bunkum :D

Anyway, I'm surprised Counter-Strike did 21k this month while the rest of the MS titles slid. I'm guessing it is riding Tom Clancy's coat tails.

It is still a bust in my book. It should have been for XBL what SOCOM was for PS2 Online.

Can anyone post the numbers for the best selling third party software on the Gamecube for reference?

On another note, I'm still majorly dissapointed that Eternal Darkness didn't sell more than it did.

May I know why people never metion the 600k or so SMS sold with the bundle? It wasn't a free game... SMS is more like 2.1 million in the US (not counting canada japan europe)

Yay for Four Swords. Looking forward to seeing how Pikmin 2 does. I'd expect it to at least match Pikmin's numbers. I know the original had a lot going for it, near launch title etc... but the almost universal praise for it's sequel might attract a few people who stayed away the first time.
