Author Cooper Lawrence apologizes for Mass Effect lies

What exactly do you want?

The amazon thing got her to actually take a look at the situation, yeah.

But when she took that look she realized that she was wrong, and actually said so.

For these conservative talking heads, admission of wrong doing, or even wrong information, is no small thing. I'm not going to run around being her fan now because she apologized, but as far as I'm concerned, she is absolved of the part she played in all of this, because she not only said she was wrong, but pointed out just how wrong she was; that there is nothing at all pornographic about the game, and that she had not bothered to do her own research beforehand.

The onus now lies squarely with Fox.
yep

I have my doubts about her apology. I bet she didn't like all the negative attention she was getting on amazon.com and probably other places as well.

Of course she didn't.

But she came out and said not only that she was wrong, but that it was because she hadn't bothered to do any research.

She basically admitted that she hadn't bothered to do her job, and wrongfully accused Mass Effect of false things because of it. That's the kind of admission which could easily hurt her career, but she was willing to make it.

How is that not good enough? What more would make you happy?

Well at least she apologized if no truth was to it at least she did. Now all we need is that garbage of a Network Fox News to take it in the ass and apologize.

I'm more likely to think she is a somewhat innocent pawn in this. Fox is known for lying and have no obligation to tell (or track record for telling) the truth. They found an "expert" who conveniently needed exposure for there book ...
Producers tell her what they want to say, she says it, internet erupts. If she had the temerity to say no, they would simply have found another person who would.

True, but I think a quick look at her Amazon page had something to do with the apology too. A one-star rating means much potential $$$ go bye bye.

Apology or not, she sure seemed smug on that show about something she hadn't even seen for herself. When you rely solely on what Fox News producers tell you and then couch it off as your "expert opinion," it's hard to have too much sympathy.

Well, as you point out, Fox News is known for lying. It was her fault for believing that Fox told her.

Oh of course, it shoots her credibility to bits and I have no doubt that her apology was likely due to the amazon backlash. I do believe it's her only recourse to dig herself out of the hole Fox dug for her. As games arent taken seriously by most media, she probably thought it was an easy publicity jaunt with no fear of reprisals.

"Any publicity is good publicity" means the exposure was probably seen as "win-win" for her and her publisher. Cynicism tells me this. I know it's her fault, but I bet Fox came to her/found her rather than she coming to them about the Mass Effect issue.

Amazon has since removed any negative reviews that are clearly from anyone who hasn't read the book, but they have not cleared the extensive user-created tags for the book.

Her book still has a rating of 1 star because the reviewers have evolved to say they have 'read' it. Quite amusing.

If she went on the show and agreed to have herself characterized as an expert in the matter, then she is not a pawn nor is she innocent. She saw it as a way to promote her book, assumed this was going to be an easy attack and did it. Geoff called her expertise on the mat and she got burned.

If she had the temerity to say no, she would not be in the situation she is in. In a profession where your reputation is paramount, she should have known better. Sorry, but I can't feel sorry for her. I feel sorry for the folks at BioWare that have had their hard work mis-represented by ill-informed and sensationalist "reporters".

It's good she came to her senses. That report was your typical sensationalist reactionary bullshit, EXCEPT she realized Fox stung her along for the ride this time. Or perhaps she's just that quick to assume.
