Auto-saving: Do you trust it?

I'm sitting here playing Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters (great game btw) and every now and then it auto-saves for me.
But strangely, when I get to one of these auto-save checkpoints... I pause the game and manually save myself.

After a few minutes of thought I realized I do this more often then not.

Off hand I can't name the games in particular, but I know it's something I've done in the past. I will come to an auto-save checkpoint, then save manually before I quit.

Am I the only one who doesn't trust a games auto-save feature?
 
For me it depends on what it's auto-saving. If I just did something ridonkulously hard, I usually save on my own, regardless of auto-save, and I almost always manual save when I've finished a long session of playing something.
 
I don't do it just in case, I do it out of spite to the system! I WILL NOT BE A MACHINE TO YOUR CAUSE!!

Nah I do it mainly to keep track of the "original" save and know where the hell I am in the game, because I often save then turn off whatever game I am playing.
 
I probably trust it too much. I can't count the number of times I've quit playing through a game because I didn't save correctly.
 
Obsessively saving/reloading if I don't clear a zone to my liking sucks donkey balls. I wish Autosave was all there was.
 
Be it while gaming or anywhere else, I make it a point to save as often as possible. While typing I usually save every 3-5 seconds.

Moral of this story? No I don't trust ****ing autosaving.

I trust it, but it is worthless in Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters because not matter what you do, if you quite the game mid-level and then come back, you start at the beginning sans significant enemies/obstacles.

Still, I usually save only at the end of levels just in case. Old habit I guess.
 
I've had a game Auto Save when I was falling to my death. It only allowed Auto Saving. I had to start over...:(

But for most cases it's fine.
 
The game needs to tell you it's autosaving. Elebits has autosave but it never tells you when or if it's saving, so I always save manually just to be sure.

Most games have frame ratedrops when auto saving, I always take that as a cue.
 
Well, I think I've decided to just let auto saving do it's thing in games. I am finding the quick save option takes me away from the game too much these days. I just want to sit back and relax, not worry about having to save after ever bullet or movement I make. Not quick saving makes the game a lot more interesting.
 
Well here's something I haven't given much thought before.

I remember when games started appearing that had an Auto-Save feature, and I thought it was pretty neat. It was great not having to worry about manually saving, albeit that I would still manually save fairly regularly. So yeah, until I come across any problems with auto-saves, I guess I trust them. I always have.

You're getting me thinking about Quick Save too. What's with that? On PC, I remember some games having such a thing, as well as the regular Save option. Was it just that you used the F keys to "Quick Save", something that required less time in comparison to opening up a menu, so someone thought of giving it a special name?
 
Actually i go too used to auto saving. I managed to loose my progress in Armored Core and EDF a couple of times because i forgot to save, i mean heck both games were perfect for an auto save after every mission. Usually it depends on the game, in an rpg i obviously hit up every save point i have, shooters i let it check point/auto unless its on pc which then causes me to obsessively quick save every 2 minutes.

Yes most shooters had F5 as quick save and F6 or F9 as quick load. Both were key short cuts.
 
I manually save once in a while just in case a game hasn't been properly beta tested and it's possible to get "stuck".
 
Every game should offer the option to turn it off.
Polyphony, I'm looking at you. Don't do that shit again in "Gran Turismo 5".
 
I don't save after the game auto-saves, but I make my own saves at various intervals in case the auto-save happens to be in a bad spot i.e. imminent death.
 
I usually manual save before I quit playing, just to make sure.

I used to have a quick save problem, I realized it when I noticed I had over 700 megs of saves from Oblivion.
 
I trust it, but I do manual save every 10 minutes either way =P.

A bad example is Dark Messiah, the freaking game auto saved when I was jumping to my death... it was funny having to reload the save just to die 1 second later. Thankfully, the manual save I did 2 minutes prior to that saved my ass =P
 
I trust most games and it really doesn't take long to recognize a game unable to perform this task well.

I absolutely detest manual saving, however. It completely draws you out of the experience.
 
I trust it. That said, I likely wouldn't in a RPG. They're my compulsive genre. It's just that none come to mind.

Titles that do are action, fighting, or racing games which auto-save after completing a stage. Burnout 3 and Gran Turismo 4, in particular come to mind, since I've casually played them on a regular basis since they released. Tenchu series, Dynasty Warriors perhaps, and others.

FPS games to an extent, too. I try to avoid manual anywhere-saving since it massively destroys any sense of risk, so if I can let the designer (via where he chose to play auto-save checkpoints) determine where I save, I'm fine with that.
 
Usually, though in Farcry: Instincts it doesn't always save the checkpoint, and in Outrun 2 it never actually tells you when it's saving, nor is there a manual option. So it's scary to shut off the console at the wrong time.
 
Depends on the game and how reliable it is, but I'm usually a guy to save alot when something is about to happen. The amount of saves I had in Oblivion was crazy, had to delete quite alot to get some space back and some performance (I think the saves affected the menu performance abit, didn't it?).
 
I trust it. Another Insomniac Games game, Resistance, does the same thing. I usually just use the PS button to quit out of the game... and I don't even bother about saving manually.


It always automatically saves at the last checkpoint.
 
I forget to save a lot aside from when I'm ready to turn it off. You don't want to know how long I went without saving in Pokemon Diamond. :x I just closed the DS when I was done and picked it back up later. Of course, if saving didn't take so long, I may have been inclined to save more often. Good thing it never really came back to bite me. If I had been playing the DSfat I would have surely accidentally turned it off while trying to pause. =_=
 
I always save ALOT, why? Because when ever I watch my brother play games he goes hours without saving and ends up dying, having to do everything over, because he never saved.
 
Sure I trust it, the save is probably just fine.
I just never load it, even if it's a better point to return than my own save.
