MIAMI (AP) — Toxicology reports show Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez had cocaine and alcohol in his system when his boat crashed into a Miami Beach jetty.

The cause of death was listed as "boat crash" in the autopsy report released Saturday by the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office.

Associate Medical Examiner Kenneth Hutchins wrote in the report that the 24-year-old Fernandez had suffered blunt force injuries to his head and body.

The Sept. 25 crash killed Fernandez and two of his friends, 27-year-old Emilio Jesus Macias and 25-year-old Eduardo Rivero.

Toxicology reports show both men also had alcohol in their systems, while Rivero also had cocaine detectable in his system.

That's a real damn shame. What a waste of 3 young lives and one incredible talent (as well as leaving at least one unborn child fatherless). Hopefully at the very least this will give people pause before doing something so monumentally dumb in the future.

Incredibly sad, condolences to his family, friends, and teammates. It sounds like he touched a lot of people, horrible to see someone die so young and full of potential

Toxicology reports showed both Macias and Rivero also had alcohol levels below the state's legal limit, while Rivero also had cocaine in his system.

Um, looks like it was his friend who had cocaine in his system, not the pitcher.

Lot of morons think that being on a boat means they can be fucked up, drink, do rails of coke, pop molly and think I am not drinking or driving everything is good.

A damn shame that one monumental mistake cost 3 young men their lives, and a child their father.

Also a shame that some people will let that one night color their entire perception of Jose Fernandez.

Why the fuck do people do coke and booze at the same time?

Like is blow so mild that it makes you think "you know? This is not doing enough for me I need to kick it up another notch!!!"

Um it's called speedballing (sort of) and it's super fun?

Gotta be careful down here around Miami. Culture here features a lot of influences that can pull you under if you aren't in tune with your soul before getting here. Sad loss of life.

The amount you need to drink to overcome a couple lines and feel the effects of alcohol is terrifying though.

LeBatard had said, during multiple local hours, the situation would only get worse.

I never imagined he would've had cocaine in his system, though.

Pretty disappointed to hear this as the cause. While I'm sad that he's no longer with us, it was an extremely stupid decision to make.

What a damn shame.

I kind of suspected at the time he was probably drunk. Never even thought of coke. Feel awful for his family and friends and the family of the people he killed.

Unfortunately for the people left behind that might not matter if a civil suit ends up going after his estate for the drugs and alcohol being on the boat which he owned.

all of them were under the influence and they cant prove who was driving or where the drugs/drinking was done (they could have all been hammered before even getting on the boat). They all 3 made a really stupid decision that night/morning, I don't see how Jose is any more responsible than the other two, because he's rich and famous?

Well, he owned the boat. I'd say driving the boat intoxicated or letting someone else who is intoxicated drive your boat makes you more responsible.
