When it's actually good and not just to show off?

These impressions from the reasonable crowd sound rather sobering. Now it's only "evolutionary"? After all this hype, really? Still the same harsh cuts to CGI scenes? I knew something was off after these initial designs leaked. Even the few official shots from the set looked surprisingly mundane. The whole project took a huge hit for me, now I'll only expect your usual end of the year kind of blockbuster movie. Just nothing really new and certainly not something that deserves the hype GAF alone created.

anyone hyping themselves up or down based on someone else's recap is obviously gonna be set up for disappointment.

nerds, especially on the internet have a talent for hyperbole - of course the claims of this being the second coming of cinema are gonna be exaggerated. i'm excited, because i want to see how it turns out, good or bad. i love the ambition and scale behind the whole thing, and it's from one of my favourite directors - but i'll judge it when i see it, not going off some random pictures and other peoples impressions.

"I was lucky enough to see the footage (or most of it) at CIne Expo earlier this month and the impact hasn't lessened in the slightest with a second viewing. The effects, the 3D and the sheer scope of Cameron's vision are absolutely awe-inspiring. If I could only see one more film for the rest of my life then, assuming they don't make a sequel to Nuns On The Run, Avatar would be it. This isn't just the event movie of the year but quite possibly the most ambitious film of the decade and I am literally counting the days until I get to see the whole thing. There are still three days to go at this year’s Con but they’re going to have to work very hard to top what people have now seen of Avatar".

Thats a pretty damn glowing review of the footage from someone who saw it twice already.
Its going to be interesting to see it with my own eyes on the 21st of August.

Don't get smart :P

They have just seen scenes that nobody else has. If Cameron decides to release a trailer with scenes in it, great, discuss it. Descriptions of scenes that we haven't seen yet should at least be tagged.

I'm sure had people posted entire spoilers of the Spider-Man 3 early preview scene, people in that thread would have gotten pissed as well way back when.

Why are you snapping at me? I'm just asking because I want to know what the rules are so I don't get banned. :(

You're a mean, bitter man. :(

Man, Depp really needs to pay a little extra for his hairplugs.

Harry @ AICN had some impressions himself:
any audience... that camps out overnight, travels from around the world, to see a glimpse of their Vampire movie stars and a brief glimpse at too short footage. They're REAL GEEKS in my book. They make their own T-shirts, costumes, outfits. They hang on every word, rumor and report. They're real geeks, just excited by the romance of young love and the fantasy of immortality. And that's cool. To see so many truly hot young women at Comic Con... that isn't a shame, that's a goddamn relief! Because at Comic Con - they'll become not real geeks, but BIGGER geeks - and just spending these first several panels with them - well, it was nice. There was a passion and a thrill and energy to the room that was missing when they had gone.

BUT - I have mixed feelings about them leaving before AVATAR's 25 minutes screened. One, I was glad that we wouldn't have screams... But I really wish they had seen AVATAR, because the burgeoning relationship and romantic possibilities between Zoe Saldana's Neytiri and Sam Worthington's Jake Sully. It was so magical, so enticing and so powerful that it would have instantly transformed all of them into campaigners for the film. I honestly believe that.

...

Jim came out and the room was absolutely intimidated. You could feel everyone just kinda nodding their heads as Jim earnestly and with true conviction showed us what one of the richest true blooded awesome geeks on this planet was like. A small town boy from Canada - whose town was a fraction of the population of the room... that grew up devouring science fiction novels and thinking and dreaming about the possibilities of OUT THERE. And this is his dream of what is out there.

You can see it in every frame of the film. This is Cameron's dream - a dream he wishes to share with all of us. And frankly - it blew me away. Quint did a great job describing the blow by blow of it all, but to me - the magic of Pandora came to life the second that Sam's Jake had his consciousness transferred into his Na'vi body. When I was paralyzed below the waist - I spent 6 months trying to wiggle my toes - and the facial glee that his character has at being able to wiggle his toes. For a signal from his brain to his feet to actually work... and that reaction. I'll never forget the moment when I saw my toes twitch and begin to move. It is... amongst the most amazing moments of my life. And the wonder and awe he has at being able to stand, towering over his fellow humans, to walk, awkwardly at first, but to be able to move... effortlessly. Its a dream I've been working towards the past few years - and I can not wait to get there.

I loved the performance that was coming through in this character as he played with Pandora - but when Zoe's Neytiri became involved. My jaw... dropped. It is seriously one of the most wonderful and awe-inspiring images I've seen in years. I was watching a completely unfettered collective of imaginations realized in such a beautiful, cinematic and thrilling manner that I just was stunned.

This film will be a cultural marker I feel. You'll always have people that feel cooler than anything that others love, but this is pretty stunning work - and in many ways - Jim was showing us the small scenes. The character beats. Not the huge stuff. At least as I know it from the scriptment all those years ago.

Why do you insist that is Jake Sully? It looks feminine as hell. If it is indeed supposed to be Worthington then someone at WETA fucked up.

No way. Look a few posts up and you'll see Neytiri (Zoe's AVATAR). The one I posted looks far more masculin.

I was among those who thought it was a female earlier on but I can clearly see it is male now (and a Worthington lookalike).

The image quality/shadowing in the earlier image made the features look slimmer (as well as a large eyelash):

But in direct feed it looks like this (the left one obviously):

This is looking pretty hot. I'm excited.

wait. what happened to Harry???
He was gravely injured in an accident while moving equipment during a convention back in the mid 90s. This left him bedridden for years and indirectly led to the creation of AICN- he had the time and interest to become very active in the internet movie rumor mill.

Yeah I certainly hope there's much more to this story than... pardon the pun... meets the eye. I too think I'm starting to figure things out on just a few tidbits and imagery, so I just hope I'm fuckin' oath dead wrong and the movie will blow me away with twists and in-depth awesomeness, not that it's a prerequisite for an entertaining film, but you get my driftwood.

I'm watching the presentation now (links in op) and Stephen Lang is pretty hilarious. Practically in character when speaking, the man is in amazing shape as well considering his age (nearing 60).

Wow. I never knew that about him (despite following AICN for years). Now I feel bad for smirking at the odd fat joke someone would make about him:(

It's not easy to get in shape when you can't move. But what can you do, it's the internet. People will be mean no matter what.

see, this is what i meant earlier about the ambition and scope behind Avatar. it's inspiring seeing someone creating something that has been their vision for so long ( apparently the script was written years ago but only now does the tech allow it to be realised?). some people here seem determined to hate on it, but hey, at least someone is trying something so (apparently) huge in scope that it's got to be commended.

james cameron is a nerd. he's a nerd with a massive amount of money behind him to create this vision, and given his previous films where he created such immersive, atmospheric worlds, i have no doubt he'll succeed here, and in a way totally untouched by studio interference and catering to popular opinion, due to his clout as a director.

i only hope that this movie will inspire me in terms of new worlds and atmosphere in the way 'Aliens' did when i first snuck out my step bro's tape of it and watched it as a 6 year old.

Heh, there are so many who utterly despise furries (especially here), I wonder if they'll be able to put that aside to watch this movie?

Well, that aside, Cameron clearly has put his heart into this film and staked a lot on it. The wait is going to be tough.

Here's the picture I've been tinkering with for the past 20 minutes or so. It's not the typical mirror flip, as I've tried to remove as many obvious mirrored parts as possible, while somewhat keeping the spirit of the skin pattern that they seem to have going on. The result I hope is something that's not quite as disturbing to look at:

I don't know however if *any* of the freckles are supposed to be symmetrical, or not. The freckle lines that clearly follow the facial lines would suggest there has to be some symmetry.

I think this was the reason for James Cameron's lengthy speech on Avatar at E3. He figured he was surrounded by a bunch of nerds (accurate) and could pontificate at length on his film (perhaps for a bit too long).

hahaha yeah he carried on like a nutcase. proof of nerdiness if ever i saw it!

it's awesome seeing someone with the geekiness and hardware fetish but the control-freak factor with milliions at his disposal. have faith people!

Nice work.

James Cameron should really throw us a bone here. A couple of pics at least. :P

Davy Jones fooled a lot of people.

Some people still believe parts of Davey Jones are "real", like his eyes, even. :P I knew WETA would fail. Camewrong really should've gone with ILM...

I love when Harry agrees with you he's a reliable source. There has rarely been anything this man doesn't like. :lol

I love how he thinks that the audience that's interested in Twilight is going to be interested in Avatar at all. Yes there's a romance...between two cgi cat-looking creatures. Good luck with that.

Probably the best use of CGI I have ever seen. Still blows me away.

Would it have been that hard to release a public trailer this week? A bunch of Avatar fanboys screaming and raving about it isn't going to make me a believer.

It might not be so much as getting the BEST people for the job, but rather getting the best people for the volume of work under a certain cost though. Let's face it, the movie is fucking expensive as it is, and it's extremely CG heavy. If Cameron went with ILM, we could be looking at 1.5x of the budget or more.

Yeah, I seriosuly thought Davy Jones was a guy with a mask, with some of the tentacles on his face being an added CGI. Really amazing work by ILM there. In static pictures these navi guys look really solid too, we'll see what it will be like in motion.

Anyone else always confuse this with Avatar airbender cartoon?

I think this might be a issue upon release. The title looks exactly like the airbender title as far as font goes, and the public knows that there is a Airbender movie coming out due to the trailer from last month. The only people that know that Cameron's Avatar is coming is a few on the internet., and there has been no trailer or marketing at all, and there won't be until late August.

Yep those letters R,A,T,A,V and A do look to be in the same order so as to spell AVATAR. Cameron should hand in his film director badge and proceed to melt his Oscars in a metal refinery for his blatant copying of the word from a tv show.

When did he decide on the Avatar name?

Cause, he told the cartoon to fuck off and they chose another name for the movie. Well, a shortened name.

I cant be assed to read through all 14 pages that have popped up since I last visited GAF, so can someone simply tell me if anything was shown?

Yes, and it was glorious. They are still scraping cum off the ceiling.

They showed 25minutes of footage, Almost unanimous praise and unrivaled to anything else currently out

But nothing for us humble internet surfers to see, right?

Either way, provided the spoilered text is right, then I guess I might as well read the 14 pages, lolz.

Well I received an email stating they are showing a fifteen minute sneak preview in selected 3D theaters on August 21st. It could have been posted already, I just haven't been on top of this film as I should be.

May I ask how do you get into that? I'd love to do it if it's free <3
