Yep those letters R,A,T,A,V and A do look to be in the same order so as to spell AVATAR. Cameron should hand in his film director badge and proceed to melt his Oscars in a metal refinery for his blatant copying of the word from a tv show.

I prefered the font that was used on those AVATAR shirts that some directors were sporting. It was more futuristic font, and less...ancient writing font.

LOL @ the spoiler paranoia in this thread.

People, hearing about a BODY GESTURE that occurs in a movie is NOT a spoiler. Guess what, here's another spoiler: The main character walks down the corridor of a spaceship. I haven't seen any footage from this movie but I guarantee this is somewhere in there. Now you're going in even less "fresh".

I have no problem spoiler-tagging rundowns of scenes and plot points (and appreciate it when others do it), but to cry about a gesture or about the posting of promotional images/posters is taking it way, way too far.

I think letting the "I only want to know the title and cast" crowd have ANY influence in a DISCUSSION thread is ridiculous. Go wherever you want, make whatever special thread you want to engage in such obsessive-compulsive paranoia, but don't push it on normal people.

/end rant

Anyway, on the surface there doesn't seem to be anything extraordinary about the premise here (at least to anyone who likes sci-fi), but Cameron is much like Ridley Scott in that its not his stories, but their executions that makes his work amazing. I have faith that even if this was a story told a thousand times, Cameron would make it feel brand new. I don't know much yet, but with as little as any of us know there isn't a single credible reason yet to assume disappointment from Cameron. I can't wait.

Jett is in denial. He totally fapped to the Na'Vi picture that turned out to be Sam Worthington's because it was "feminine" and "definitely Zoe Saldana". :lol
Now he's criticizing the VFX house behind the film for deceiving him.

Just PMed Duckroll, see you in a month.

Are you insane?

Worst case scenario: This movie is a sci-fi retelling of Disney's Pocahontas, and you've already had the whole thing spoiled without even knowing it.

Jett's just pissed off because he doesn't want to watch a 3D movie in its full 3D glory. :D

The Way It's Meant To Be™

I really do wonder how this movie will play out in 2D, though. Will be interesting to see.

I doubt it, the main character is in a wheelchair.

Again, if you look at the full impressions most are giving, especially that video blog of the 4 different opinions of the slashfilm guys, you find that they all claim it to be the best looking CG ever, but that you inherently know its CG because the designs are so alien.

I'm really anticipating CGI footage. Partly because James Cameron is awesome but mostly because I doubt the CGI will be that good. And if it is, I need to see it.

I think CGI has plateaued for a while now except for human models (but that's getting close too).

So do you need to wear those stupid glasses with two different colors when watching this?

The glasses are now big polarised frames like sunglasses, unless your cinema is very very shitty. Head to imax to avoid those head-ache inducing 50s-era glasses.

The only IMAX cinema here belongs to a museum and all they show is info movies about dolphins, space and dinosaurs and shit on a huge screen shaped like a dome. That might not be so far from Avatar, but even so it's hardly the same thing :)

Well then you may want to check their schdule close to December, because AVATAR has a contracted 3 months of exclusive showing for IMAX theatres around the world.

If that's the case I doubt it's gonna do well here. Like I said, there's one IMAX cinema and I think there are less than 300 seats in it. And the cinema is located outside the town.

EDIT: I just looked at the homepage of the largest cinema chain here and it seems the movie is due the 12th of december. They don't have any IMAX cinemas, so I guess they are allowed to show it on a normal screen?

i dont like the font either, but it fits the jungle theme i think.

so its going to do worse because of the fact that it has a contract?

Uh?

Of course the movie would do worse here since there are only like two small IMAX theaters in the whole country, which then obviously would mean that few would be able to go and see it. But I just edited my last post and that doesn't seem to be the case according to the largest distributor here, which I guess are gonna show it on normal screens.

Dude, its going to be showing in 3D and 2D on regular screens as well, I was just suggesting IMAX as a way to avoid the shitty Dolby/Real-D glasses that regular cinemas will fit you with.

Its also not releasing on the 12th of December anywhere. The earliest dates are 16th December. I don't know where you live, but check your date here: http://microsites2.foxinternational.com/ww/avatar/release_dates.html If you live in the US you'll get it the 18th.

Ah, my bad, I read it wrong. Yes, it's the 18th of december. I must have read it like "oh, december" and then the month instead of the day again :)

I read up some more about the theaters here and apparantely they've been introducing some type of 3D technology there for movies such as Ice Age 3, which I totally managed to ignore. They never mention IMAX though.

IMAX actually has the oldest 3D tech out of the three available, afaik.

edit: just read on Wiki that the footage at Comic-Con was screened in Dolby 3D. A question to any gaffer that was at the presentation: During the "spear in YO FACE, BEEATCH!" 3D scene, did the spear appear to interlace and break up? This is something I've noticed in Dolby 3D presentations everytime something came flying out at you.

IMAX glasses are less recent indeed, but much much better.

Again people, these are probably the most level-headed, varying, down to earth and informative impressions of the footage you will find:

HAH, I just found out there's a RealD theater near me. I'll go see Avatar in that instead of the Dolby3D crap.

Test drive the glasses before you see AVATAR. There are two different sets of Real D glasses as far as I know, just make sure they're not the yellow/green narrow ones.

Also bit of an update: http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1616919/story.jhtml

For the 15 minute free preview of AVATAR at IMAX theatres on August 21st, there will be a one hour window for said screenings. This means that there will probably be 3 screenings at most at the theatres (I doubt they can fit in all 4).

Edit, checked it out jett and it seems most Real D glasses are in fact the better ones:

Not as good as the IMAX glasses, but still pretty good.

You wear them. They are polarised as opposed to the old lenticular red/blue glasses which often gave headaches. Two different tinted prints are overlayed and each eye picks up each print, giving the illusion of 3D, as opposed to Dolby's retarded method where the glasses are battery operated and synch up with the different frames - only when there is a lot of action you experience a ghosting of sorts and headaches. Also Dolby's glasses are narrow, uncomfortable, and shitty, blocking your peripheral vision.

Sweet. I'm planning on checking out Ice Age 3D on this thing tomorrow. I wonder if that's a good enough showcase.

I saw Ice Age 3 in 2D and I can tell you the film is at least well directed. Would love to hear your impressions of the 3D. Hopefully they didn't have a gimmicky approach to it.

Dude! Please answer me this:

Did you get headaches, btw?

Scullibundo said:
Yeah thats what I've heard. Good to hear they look less human.

They DEFINITELY look less human. I'd go further, but is that a spoiler? ;)

jett, no headaches whatsoever, and I didn't notice the spear breaking up. Just so you know, they are using the same 3D glasses at every panel at Comic-Con that's taking advantage of 3D (and, every time the panel is over, begging for people to return them!), so if something didn't look right, it was the movie's fault. To me, Avatar looked flawless. Toy Story 2 3D footage they showed I was less impressed with, and Beauty and the Beast 3D....even less impressed with that.

The glasses they gave us weren't comfortable to wear themselves - they were Dolby 3D something or other, not the ones posted by Sculli. Hopefully those will be used more widely when the movie is out. Hope that answered your question.

Dolby's method should be brighter, with better color. The polarized presentations I've seen looked like shit. I'll take the headaches.
EDIT: I've seen plenty of material through shutter glasses, but it was mostly off of computer monitors. I loved it, though. I watched the movie parts of T2:3D (not at Universal) a completely different way once, too. There were two TVs built into the headset, with separate feeds run to each for left and right eyes.

Yeah, I was about to say isn't the battery powered glasses setup the best possible quality?

JAMES CAMERON ADDRESSES BATTLE ANGEL:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5ln...rketsaw.blogspot.com/&feature=player_embedded

Fuck Cameron's a funny fucker.

Also SEQUELS:
He also talked about the process of his new filming process a bit whilst Peter Jackson was there. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/41819

AVATAR: Cameron said he spent so much time developing this world that there’s a lot more use he can get out of it. Sequels are definitely something he’s interested in, providing, of course, the movie does well and the sequel is wanted.

He also mentioned wanting to put a version of the movie on the DVD that is just the raw footage of the actors doing their performance capture so everyone can see just how pure of a process it is, how much the end result is the actors.

BATTLE ANGEL ALITA: “It’s a good idea to have your next gig lined up in case AVATAR tanks.” Laughs, but says it’s still on his plate, as are other projects that aren’t as heavily effects driven. “It’s not a great time to ask a woman if she wants more kids when she’s crowning.”
