The Abyss, T2 and Titanic were a mutual effort from Digital Domain and ILM. At the time, Cameron was CEO of Digital Domain.
Digital Domain didn't exist when The Abyss and T2 were made.
Most of the visual effects in The Abyss were done by Dream Quest Images, but some key shots... the ones people really remember, were done by ILM.
T2 was mostly ILM and 4Ward.
Titanic was mostly Digital Domain. ILM was only brought on at the last minute so that the movie could make its release date. ILM has gotten a lot of "911" calls because they can usually ramp up and match (or exceed) other studio's work on short notice. Another example of that, one that's also a Dreamquest/ILM project, like the Abyss, is Deep Rising. ILM came on and did a bunch of character animation on that on some crazy deadline, like three weeks or something.

Directors cut of Titanic was so awesome.

Its from the set obviously. And I think you mean AWESOME image.

The Return of the King.

I want this movie to be awesome as much as the next guy, but come on James stop with the new photos of Avatar that are just of you dicking around on the set.

OMG THERE'S PEOPLE IN THIS MOVIE

even the spy pics are teasing us!

/Now has avatarmovie.com music on repeat. Goddammit Sculli, what have you done to me?

Amazing camera work, the angle combined with the contrast of darkness and colors is pretty impressive and just the right amount of blur.

Cameron should hire this person. The sneak photographer only shows images of people in the movie being amazed from looking at something off-screen.

eruditechick: Environmental crisis? Wait, Avatar's gonna have a MESSAGE? A SciFi movie that comments on society and the projection of humanity? NOOOO.

Isn't that a mainstay of the genre? Sounds like this guy only watches the shitty summer-action-flick sub-genre of sci-fi.

:\

Wow. Okay Sculli, you win. All my doubts are gone now. Just looking at those two photos are enough to make me a believer. The realism, the atmosphere, the visual mastery. There are no words. All hail Cameron the great! You can just see it in their faces, Avatar is the REAL SHIT.

Ah Cameron shares my framerate pain. I've had it with 24 frames per second. Blurred out POS. 3D this, 3D that, where are my native 72FPS movies!?

Yeah, I really find it difficult to watch movies with out some level of de-judder (motion interpolation).

72fps however would look wonky for live-action imo.

What the heck is the soap opera look?

Watch a live action movie with motion interpolation on the highest setting.

Two spy photos from the Comic-Con screening just leaked.

KEEP THEM IN LINK FORM AND DO NOT RE-POST THEM AS THERE ARE PEOPLE AVOIDING ALL SPOILERS.

I understand that they don't show much, just respect that others want to go into this film completely blank.

I wish they uploaded the other bits. The people aren't really the exciting part of this film.

BUT. the leak looks high quality. If the video leaks. I will watch.

What the fuck? Even spy photos don't show nothing.

Stop hating on this masterpiece. You can tell from the leaked pictures the movie is pure class, and the acting and cinematography is top notch. You don't need to have action, CG or aliens to tell a great story, and Cameron knows this. I don't expect everyone to understand though.

It does seem pretty egotistical, but you could also see it as an insult really.

You make the biggest film of all time and someone interviews you and calls it 'one of the biggest', it's like he's negating it in some way.

And what's funny is, he's actually wrong. Adjusted for inflation Gone With the Wind is the biggest film of all time, not Titanic.

That said, AVATAR is sounding badass and I'm looking forward to it. AICN had a pretty in-depth description of what was shown at Comic-Con and... I'm excited. Looking forward to it.

You forgot to mention the soundtrack.

THIS is what we get? Pictures of live action stuff? Who cares.

Adjusting for inflation ignores the fact that Gone with the Wind was released and rereleased for DECADES, had very little competition, did not have to compete with TV, internet, video games, anything. It did very well, but it was a very different time and it's apples to oranges comparing something like that to anything released today.

I also have a problem adjusting Titanic to today's levels considering there was no DVD market, Internet was in it's infancy, there was shit in theatres, and it was able to stay in theatres for NINE MONTHS. Not taking anything away from it but Dark Knight was able to hit 530 in 1/3 of the time and had competition out the ass.

Just take movie grosses for what they are. Inflation is a good way of saying "Everything was better in the past!"

THE TRAILER COMES OUT THIS MONTH! Can you believe we're finally getting it? :lol

No I can't believe it. I AM SO HYPED! Oh my God, ALL HAIL CAMERON! This is going to be the BEST movie EVER! Holy shit 3D FUCK YEAH!

I'm going to Inglorious Basterds. James Cameron better give me the AVATAR trailer attached to that film. I swear.

Ah, it's August. Three weeks until trailer then.

District 9 -> Inglorious Basterds -> Shutter Island -> The Road -> Avatar

Good films be coming.

The hype will be this movie's Achilles heel (at least in the mind of many parts of the Internet and regular moviegoers).

Personally, I don't find hype to be influential of my final opinion of a specific movie, only influencing my awareness of the movie and finally seeing what all the "hype" is about.

I love JC movies. But...Honestly. I will watch the trailer. And if I don't see and experience the meaning of life itself, then, I will never, watch a JC movie. I will also call him the worst director ever. And I will curse him during tea time everyday, for 3 years.

Exactly like I said: "at least in the mind of many parts of the Internet". :D

EDIT: My point still stands though. Many people (those who are aware of the movie and the hype surrounding it) will go into the theater, expecting it to be groundbreaking and revolutionising. Like another posted mentioned on another forum:

"The technology side alone excites me. Cameron has been sharing his new tech with Jackson and Spielberg so hopefully motion capture in general will benefit. I'm a sucker for space and new planets so even if the film doesn't live up to the hype, I don't see how it can since this film is supposed to revolutionize 3D film making with films being broken down into 'before Avatar' and 'after Avatar'. Please, that's hubris to say the least. If Avatar has a nemesis it is the extreme hype Cameron and others have built around it. Building that kind of hype and not delivering will cause backlash in proportion to the hype."

Pretty much my sentiments. I'm also extremely eager to see it.

Okay I'm getting Nvidia 3D vision in a week or two. Be on the ball you GPU fools, put up a stereoscopic Avatar trailer on your site.

They probably won't. You'll have to watch the 2D trailer, like the rest of us unlucky basterds.

Oh and by the way. Avatar day is US only huh?

I'm excited for the tech too. But just for CGI more than the 3D. There isn't even an IMAX here where I live. So there's no point.

Avatar day is worldwide (yes, including the 15min Imax screening though I'm guessing the ratio of cinemas showing it will be quite lower domestically). Online trailer for everyone of course.

Yeah. I guess I'll never get to see it in 3D. :(

I hope the trailers at least two minutes long. With a decent amount of footage.

Not a minute and a half of "From the director of the most popular film of all time" words Titanic appear in white on black background *fade to black* "and the visionary director of T1" same white lettering *fade to black* "T2" (you know the drill) *fade to black*

Then we get a close up of a Na'Vi's eye. And the date...

I dunno Scullibundo..
