There was an IMAX theatre at Espinho's planetarium I think, but it was used mostly for documentaries, with some movies too I guess, but I doubt it's even ready for 3D. I was hoping that Lusomundo would show it in some of their theatres, but since it's Warner-Lusomundo I dunno lol. Haven't heard anything either way... sigh.

The Internet ticket distribution is stupid to get the hype going. They should have had people line up for tickets the day of the event. At least people walking by will be asking, what are you guys here for and it would probably hit the news about the lines just to see a few minutes of footage. Seems like a much better way to promote and get the word out than a 30 second ticket grab on the Internet where the servers will likely fail and cause chaos. Nobody hears about that stuff on the news.

Not that I'm an expert, but I've had my nice share of IMAX action in Spain and everything has been dubbed, pal :(.

Yup. They could have gotten countless local news broadcasts and articles about the lines. It's not really the big publicity grab they were dreaming about.

Seriously, who the fuck is gonna hear about Avatar Day? Just about as many people know it exists as the people who knew Avatar was gonna be at Comic-Con.
 
Heh, the closer Avatar Day gets, the more it looks like a promotional bust. I cannot imagine what the reactions will be like if the trailer is some wrongly conceived mess as well.

Just got my double pass for the IMAX Melbourne screening. I am both excited and ready to be disappointed, in equal measure.

Whose idea was it to make us print this thing out and bring it along? It's 95% black...
 
Sydney IMAX is only doing it for media people. Just got off the phone with the girl and they're apparently all booked out already because of it.

It's showing at the Digital IMAX at Fox Entertainment Quarter (about 20 minutes walk from where I live) and Greater Union George St. in Sydney. Those showings are open to competition winners.

I don't plan on going.

Yeah I saw that as well. I rang IMAX because it wasn't on their website for the Darling Harbour one and I wanted to make sure there wasn't going to be some huge clusterfuck at the end of the year where for some reason they weren't going to be screening the film.

Entertain Quarter IMAX is a fake IMAX.
 
Most of the Sydney tickets are already gone, apparently. I don't think there's much chance of the cinemas not filling. If they don't in some countries and cinemas I think tickets will be handed out for free on the day. Fox will want those cinemas filled to capacity.

What they say about the coming backlash seems very true. On the internet, people love to hate. This thread is not going to be pretty after August 21.

As stated in the audio file, the trailer for Avatar will be premiering the same day as the IMAX footage and that is where I think the majority of you should leave it. It's just a suggestion, and is likely to get you more excited for the film rather than seeing out-of-sequence and out-of-context footage prior to the film's December 18 release.

They explain their sentiments in the audio. Basically, they think that trailers spoils a little, footage spoils a lot, and the best option is to go in having seen nothing.

Yep, exactly my thoughts. Seeing the 16 minutes will absolutely ruin the wow factor of seeing the full thing. Imagine seeing 16 minutes worth of spliced, non-chronological scenes from The Matrix or the first Star Wars or more recently; District 9 months before seeing the film. The impact of each film would be absolutely ruined. You know where story beats are going and they don't mean anything when you rewatch them, or at least, not nearly what they mean fresh.

I saw much of Watchmen, Terminator Salvation, Up, Push and Monsters vs Aliens in December of last year. It had no negative effect and instead got me talk up the films.

Same thing the year before with Rambo.

The difference is with those films, mostly sequels, you know what you're in for, as opposed to the films I mentioned.

My whole idea was of scoring a ticket for the AVATAR day and not using it. Stupid, I know, I was going to leave somebody willing to go out, but hey, nobody is perfect.

I want to see the whole thing as a virgin. So no trailers for me either :D.

I don't know about it being absolutely ruined, but I see what you mean. Seeing the film for the first time and sitting through the whole thing in awe, rather than watch a segment for the first time and being blown away is bound to take a little something out the initial experience of watching the feature start to finish. The footage that we'll be shown would most likely have been carefully selected, in terms of avoiding key story elements too. Anyway if the film is good enough in all areas it shouldn't really ruin anything considering it's only a 16 minute cut.

Coming from a spanish-speaking country, all 3D presentations thus far have been dubbed, including the live action ones. Subtitles just wouldn't work in 3D, I guess. I've thought about this before, and I'm 99% sure Avatar will be dubbed in every non-English speaking country...which means I'll have to watch it in 3D _and_ 2D just for the original acting. Which one to watch first though, I don't know. :/

In case anyone is unsure if they want to view it, the still depicts Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and his unconscious Avatar.

It looks fantastic, in my opinion. The Avatar looks like a fantasy creature. Much better looking than the toy from last week. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to mock it, though, because it looks a little goofy (like many a great fantasy creature before it).
 
In Belgium, it's seem to be a very VIP type of event only 3 showing on the 21 (in multiple theaters). You have to register to win a chance to watch the preview :lol

Not mostly sequels. 2 sequels out of 6 movies I listed. I also forgot about Coraline.

There is no difference. A movie is a movie.

When I saw the portions of those films, not many people had ANY idea if they were going to be good or bad, what they were about, etc.

I am looking forward to Avatar, but you may have built it up too much, if you really make such a distinction between it and any other movie. Here's hoping it is awesome.
